Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Christian Symbols and Stories of the Saints: As Illustrated in Art The title of the present work sufficiently indicates its general scope and purpose. It has been undertaken to satisfy a want often felt personally by the writer and often expressed to her by others. Those who go abroad and travel in Christian lands meet at every step, through town and country, in the broad light of day and in the mysterious gloom of sacred places, symbolic forms which are known in a general way to represent the mysteries and facts of the Christian faith, but which fail to recall them to the uninitiated beholder in anything like a distinct and accurate manner. Churches are dedicated to saints hitherto unheard of; and streets, sometimes large cities, bear their names. Pictures, even of saints best known, are seen, in churches and art galleries, coupled with incidents and surroundings that fairly bewilder the mind. Nor need one go abroad to feel thus puzzled and perplexed. The very pictures and prints, copied from the Great Masters, which adorn our own homes, affect us similarly. In the books which lie on our tables, in the contributions of the art critics to our newspapers and magazines, we are constantly lighting on references to names and facts of which we want ampler knowledge.
