As believers, our desire is to follow the Lord more closely and to utilize His Word for maximum impact in our lives. Occasionally, however, we find ourselves not even knowing the questions to ask, or the best way to approach Scripture in search of answers. Charles F. Stanley's Handbook for Christian Living is not a lofty theological work, nor is it an academic commentary. Instead, Dr. Stanley has prepared a friendly, easy-to-use help system for every believer. In this collection, he speaks with authority on such issues as: the real purpose of baptism how to treat others at work a proper view of those in government how grace saves us and how worry robs us what freedom reallly is He also shares biblical insight into relationships, children, parenting, loneliness, sexual pressures, as well as strategies for personal growth. From the thorny issues of daily life to a framework for the end times (and everything in between), Charles F. Stanley's Handbook for Christian brings Scripture to life, makes sense of the hard questions, and enhances your understanding of the way life was meant to be lived.

Book excerpt: You've been baptized. But do you understand what it means? Baptism is the doorway into membership in the church. It's a public declaration of the washing away of our sin and the beginning of our new life in Christ. But the sacrament that is meant to unite us is often a spring of division instead. All Christians use water to baptize. All invoke the triune name. Beyond that, there's little consensus. Talk about baptism and you're immediately plunged into arguments. Whom should we baptize? What does baptism do? Why even do it at all? Peter Leithart reunifies a church divided by baptism. He recovers the baptismal imagination of the Bible, explaining how baptism works according to Scripture. Then, in conversation with Christian tradition, he shows why baptism is something worth recovering and worth agreeing on.

Greek words (especially en and eis) are sometimes properly rendered by other words than those just given; but we maintain that an unnecessary depirture from the meanings we have given is as unjust to the Greek as it would be to the English if a foreigner should say, because we speak of going into a mountain, the English word into does not include the idea of entering within, but merely of touching the surface, of coming upon it, and that, consequently, the English phrases, going iuto water, into a river, into the sea, into trouble, mean coming to or upon water, upon a river, upon the sea, upon trouble, but not entering within these. "Tji-Our translators say, in Matt, iis G, "were baptized of him tn Jordan," and at the 11th verse, "I indeed baptize with water." In Mark i. 4, 5, 9, they say, "did baptize tn the wilderness;..". "were all baptized of him tn the river of Jordan;.."." was baptized of John in Jordan;" and yet in the 8th verse they say, "I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost." Nothing but freedom from prejudice is noeded to see the injustice of the translation with water, and with the Holy Ghost, whilst the preposition en is the preposition in every one of these instances. Even prepossession cannot blind to the absurdity of saying--although it would not be more unjust to the original than is our translation, so much approved in this instance by some of the Psedobaptists--"were baptized of him with Jordan" (Matt iii. 6); "did baptize with the wilderness" (Mark i. 4); "were all baptized of him with the river of Jordan" (ver. 5); "was baptized of John with Jordan" (ver. 9). In vindication of our assertions respecting prepositions, we may subsequently speak. The error of other meanings...

The reception of the Holy Spirit. The meaning of baptism varies wildly between different Christian traditions. Seeking common ground, Michael Green turns to Scripture to assess the varieties of baptismal theology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this simple, beautifully written book Rowan Williams explores four essential components of the Christian life: baptism, Bible, Eucharist, and prayer. Despite huge differences in Christian thinking and practice both today and in past centuries, he says, these four basic elements have remained constant and indispensable for the majority of those who call themselves Christians. In accessible, pastoral terms Williams discusses the meaning and practice of baptism, the Bible, the Eucharist, and prayer, inviting readers to really think through the Christian faith and how to live it out. Questions for reflection and discussion at the end of each chapter help readers to dig deeper and apply Williams's insights to their own lives.

Book It Takes a Church to Baptize

Download or read book It Takes a Church to Baptize written by Scot McKnight and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of baptism has troubled Protestants for centuries. Should infants be baptized before their faith is conscious, or does God command the baptism of babies whose parents have been baptized? Popular New Testament scholar Scot McKnight makes a biblical case for infant baptism, exploring its history, meaning, and practice and showing that infant baptism is the most historic Christian way of forming children into the faith. He explains that the church's practice of infant baptism developed straight from the Bible and argues that it must begin with the family and then extend to the church. Baptism is not just an individual profession of faith: it takes a family and a church community to nurture a child into faith over time. McKnight explains infant baptism for readers coming from a tradition that baptizes adults only, and he counters criticisms that fail to consider the role of families in the formation of faith. The book includes a foreword by Todd Hunter and an afterword by Gerald McDermott.
