Download or read book A Geography of Australasia and the East Indies Classic Reprint written by Lionel W. Lyde and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geography of Australasia and the East Indies I hope, too, that the book has more than these negative merits. I have had the privilege of lecturing on the Teaching of Geography to a large number of practical teachers, including members of the Teachers' Guild, of the National Schoolmasters' Holiday Course, the Education Class in Owens' College, Manchester, and the Teachers' Section of the Oxford Summer Meeting. This book is written exactly on the lines of these lectures, and embodies the criticisms and suggestions of these professional audiences. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Greater Britain India Canada Australia Africa the West Indies India, or Hindostan, has been called the brightest jewel of the British crown. The people of such a tiny island as ours may well be proud to have conquered so great a country. Our other possessions beyond the sea were mostly won from small tribes of ignorant savages, too much occupied in fighting each other to join in defending themselves against the swords and guns, the ships and horses, that made them think Europeans supernatural beings. But India, when we first knew it, was filled with many millions of people, in some ways as learned and civilized as ourselves, among whom we found powerful rulers, large armies, and magnificent cities. The inhabitants of our eastern empire are now nearly three hundred millions - roughly speaking, eight times as many people as there are in the British Islands, and about one-fifth of the whole population of the world. Yet it took hardly more than a century for a few Englishmen to master this region, nearly as large as Europe. It is all the more glory to our fathers to have won such victories so far from home. Up to nearly our own day, the journey to India was a matter of months. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Australia and Oceania Classic Reprint written by F. D. Herbertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australia and Oceania The modern teaching of geography, like that of history, lays increasing stress on the value of original authorities. One of the first steps in this direction was the biblio graphy appended to Sir Archibald Geikie's Teaching of Geography, followed in 1897 by Dr. H. R. Mill's Hints to Teachers and Students on the Choice of Geographical Books, compiled at the request of the Geographical Association. The present series goes a step farther, and attempts to depict the world in the language of men who have seen it. Book The Old Country Trade of the East Indies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Country Trade of the East Indies Classic Reprint written by William Herbert Coates and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Country Trade of the East Indies To all lovers of old ships the "Country Trade'' has ever presented an inexhaustible field of interest, the East Indies having found employment for almost every known description of vessel, in every stage of existence, - from the "crack" new teak-built ship, fresh from the hands of the Kidderpore or Damaun builders, to the ancient crock, wearily completing its last term of crazy decrepitude. Within the memory of the present generation have been seen, locally employed in the East, vessels of the most incongruous origin, though, in their "sere and yellow leaf," harmonising peacefully together in the same trade. The ' Lady Melville, ' formerly one of Green's famous "Black-wall " liners; the ' Suffolk, ' from Money Wigram; the ' Merchantman, ' a bitter rival, formerly one of Somes's frigate-built ships, were often to be seen in the "country tiers " in the Hooghly, perhaps alongside of the lowly 'Bleng, ' built at Whitehaven in 1841 to humbly follow the avocation of a collier, - now out here in company with ships which in their time carried out the Governor-General. The 1 Constance, ' formerly one of the Honourable Company's armed cruisers, was a frequent visitor to Calcutta, (her main-mast was one of the longest single sticks I have ever seen), perhaps alongside the ' Indomitable, ' which, launched from Sunderland in the "fifties' with great eclat to take her place in the service of the "Australian Auxiliary Screw-Clipper Co.," ended an interesting career out here.
