Download or read book A Future for Egypt The Road Ahead written by Karim Cot and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, grade: 1.0, Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH, language: English, abstract: The Arab Spring indicated a massive change in the political economic, and social structure of the Middle East. When Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in Tunisia he was unaware that he had sparked a social and political shift across the Middle East. Soon after protests began in Egypt and it was clear that the Middle East would never be the same. Many of the biggest issues concerning the revolution were what to do after it ends. In this period of recovery, a transition from Mubarak’s dictatorship to a new regime and the transition from a corrupt economic system to a new one would have to occur. Egypt now faces a future of a transition and, as in any transition, steps forward must be taken cautiously and all possibilities for the future considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "war on terror" and the battle in Iraq provided the framework for George W. Bush's first term in office. As he embarked on a second term, the president reaffirmed his administration's commitment to a transformative Middle East agenda that now includes the challenges of promoting democracy, non-proliferation, and Israeli-Palestinian peace. The Saban Center at the Brookings Institution commissioned a group of its experts to critique the Bush administration's first-term performance and present alternative approaches for its second term. T he Road Ahead covers the full set of challenges confronting President Bush in his second term: from fighting Binladenism to promoting Arab reform; from achieving Middle East peace to saving Iraq; and from tackling Iran to engaging Syria and Saudi Arabia. The contributors argue that the Bush administration will need to develop an integrated Middle East strategy that improves the prospects for achieving a priority identified during the 2004 presidential campaign: strengthening alliances and utilizing them to ease the burden on American leadership. Th e Road Ahead provides the necessary elements for a genuinely integrated strategic framework that will help decisionmakers manage both the changes and the continuities in America's post-9/11 Middle East policy. Contributors: Martin Indyk, Flynt Leverett, Kenneth Pollack, James Steinberg, Shibley Telhami, and Tamara Cofman Wittes, all connected with the Saban Center at the Brookings Institution. Book The Road Ahead

Download or read book The Road Ahead written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Egypt's deposed president Hosni Mubarak left in his wake an arsenal of laws used to restrict free expression and curb criticism of government, limiting association and assembly and shield the abusive police force from accountability. The transitional political leaders in Egypt have made no attempt to reform any of these laws, which, Egypt's ruling military has used to arrest protesters and journalists and to try over 12,000 civilians before military courts, adding to the heavy abusive legacy that Egypt's future civilian rulers will have to address. A genuine transition from authoritarian government to a more open system with democratic institutions requires not only elections, but the reform of laws and policies that govern the civil and political rights and freedoms of people in Egypt. Egypt's stalled transition can be revived only if the new government dismantles the existing repressive legal framework. This report sets out nine areas of Egyptian law the newly elected parliament must urgently reform, so that the law can become an instrument that protects Egyptians' rights rather than represses them"--Cover, p. Book excerpt: Egypt is one of the few great empires of antiquity that exists today as a nation state. Despite its extraordinary record of national endurance, the pressures to which Egypt currently is subjected and which are bound to intensify are already straining the ties that hold its political community together, while rendering ever more difficult the task of governing it. In this timely book, leading expert on Egyptian affairs Robert Springborg explains how a country with such a long and impressive history has now arrived at this parlous condition. As Egyptians become steadily more divided by class, religion, region, ethnicity, gender and contrasting views of how, by whom and for what purposes they should be governed, so their rulers become ever more fearful, repressive and unrepresentative. Caught in a downward spiral in which poor governance is both cause and consequence, Egypt is facing a future so uncertain that it could end up resembling neighboring countries that have collapsed under similar loads. The Egyptian "hot spot", Springborg argues, is destined to become steadily hotter, with ominous implications for its peoples, the Middle East and North Africa, and the wider world.

Book Tahrir Voices

Book excerpt: “Tarek pondered lengthily before deciding on important matters. He was very cautious and meticulously planned for the day he left to join the demonstrations. He removed all his credit cards and ATM cards from his wallet and only left his national ID, his business card and engineer’s syndicate card. He removed the keys to his parents’ home as his ID included their address and he feared someone breaking into the house if something happened to him. Rania later noticed the keys hanging on the key holder, unaware that he had removed them. Tarek left a list of important information for Rania in case of emergency, and the steps that she should take if he disappeared... Tarek clearly instructed her to contact his father, his brother and his colleague at work if police detained him. At that point, Rania was thinking of two scenarios: either he would be beaten and released like Amr Salama, or he would be beaten and imprisoned. In her mind there was no third option...” In 2011, the winds of change blew across Egypt, the region and the world.
