Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of women's ministry is longer and far more varied than most people imagine. This book tells the story of women's ministry in the Free Churches, and looks at its impact on the ways we worship and live out our Christian lives. Women have ministered in garrets and gutters, at home and on the mission field. Today, women are fully engaged in ministry within our multicultural society, bringing a diversity of voices to match the diversity of the world in which we live. Six well-known contributors who are themselves involved in the story of women's ministry explore issues of leadership and authority, preaching and worship, global perspectives, the relation to feminist theology and the ecumenical setting. Their contributions are complemented by the voice of experience. Women from varied backgrounds tell their own stories of being called to a ministry that sometimes doesn't fit, of wrestling with the traditions that have nurtured their faith and that can put obstacles in their way. Here we see something of the variety and of the rich texture of women's ministries in the contemporary church. Some of the women represented here have found their journey to ministry uncomplicated. Others have traveled long and painful roads, meeting opposition and hostility. Many have moved from trying to be one of the boys to the recognition that their gender can have an influence on their ministry. The stories interact with the articles, bringing many lively and dramatic voices to the telling of our story.

Book In Solidarity with the Earth

Download or read book In Solidarity with the Earth written by Hilda P. Koster and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on case studies, the book creates a multidisciplinary conversation on the gendered vulnerabilities resulting from extractive industries and toxic pollution, and also charts the resilience and courage of women as they resist polluting industries, fight for clean water and seek to protect the land. While ecumenical in scope, the book takes its departure from the concept of integral ecology introduced in Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si'. The first three sections of the book focus on the social and ecological challenges facing minoritized women and their communities that are related to mining, pollutants and biodiversity loss, and toxicity. The final section of the book focuses on the possibilities and obstacles to global solidarity. All chapters offer a cross disciplinary response to a particular local situation, tracing the ways ecological destruction, resulting from extraction and toxic contamination, affects the lives of women and their communities. The book pays careful attention to the political, economic, and legal structures facilitating these life-threatening challenges. Each section concludes with a response from a 'practitioner' in the field, representing an ecclesial organization or NGO focused on eco-justice advocacy in the global South, or minority communities in the global North.

Book The Church as the Body of Christ in the Pauline Corpus

Download or read book The Church as the Body of Christ in the Pauline Corpus written by Gosnell L. O. R. Yorke and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In discussions of the church as the body of Christ (sime Christou) within the Pauline corpus, numerous New Testament scholars have tried to come to grips with a fundamental but yet unresolved issueóthe nature of the relationships between Christ via his own body and the church as body. The implicit assumption is that sime Christou as ecclesiological language does point to Christ's once crucified but now risen body in some direct wayóeither mystically or metaphorically. This book examines exegetically that basic assumption in the light of the 18 ecclesiological references to sima and demonstrates that the expression is not a reference to Christ's personal body, as numerous scholars assert, but that it simply has the human body (any human body) as its referent. The book maintains that Christ's personal body, crucified and risen, becomes relevant only in a larger Christological and soteriological sense.

Book Laity and Participation

Download or read book Laity and Participation written by Thomas Hoebel and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right across denominational boundaries lay theology is dominated by negatives: the laity simply defined as the non-ordained, the alleged exclusion of the laity from full participation, the sole focus on what they cannot or should not do, and, above all, the total absence of an ecumenical lay theology. In a unique approach, this volume sets out to find ways of overcoming these negatives so predominant in current lay theology. The author explores positions and perspectives put forward in Roman Catholic theology from Vatican II up to the present. These are compared and contrasted with concepts and suggestions of present-day Anglican Theology as well as with those of liberative theologies in Latin American and Asia. Rethinking the content, language, and metaphors of lay theology, in the final part of this volume the author proposes a new image for discussing the Church, a model focusing on the interdependence and collaboration of all the people in the Church. This is then used to sketch out the framework for a new type of lay theology. Imbedded in ecclesiology, in the concept of all believers together being the Church, the author endeavours to suggest a lay theology that is indeed positive, ecumenical and universal.

Book The Witness of the Student Christian Movement

Download or read book The Witness of the Student Christian Movement written by Robin H. S. Boyd and published by Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Student Christian Movement was one of the most influential movements in the 20th century. This book is the story of 'the SCM tradition' as it began and developed, as it suffered division, struggle and perhaps went astray, and as it has sought to rediscover its roots, as it faces the future in hope. "Robin Boyd shows just how much the ecumenical movement of the twentieth century owes to the SCM. So why did a movement that changed the course of church history decline in the late 1960s? Here is a well argued, penetrating and convincing answer which sheds light on today's complex ecumenical scene and has implications for the future direction of the ecumenical journey." Mary Tanner, Vice-President, World Council of Churches

Book What Happens in Holy Communion

Download or read book What Happens in Holy Communion written by Michael Welker and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the large churches in the world agree on this: communion is the highest expression of the church unity. Yet it is exactly the act of communion that historically has given rise to vehement controversies among the churches. This new book not only explores the meaning of holy communion but also marks a turning point on the way to common understanding. Welker gives a clear explanation of holy communion based on the biblical tradition and evaluates the ecumenical discourse on communion of the past thirty years. In the process he answers such often posed questions as "What do we mean when we say that Christ is present in communion?" "How are Christ's body and blood connected with bread and wine?" "What is the difference between the Christian Supper and the Jewish Passover meal?" and "Are children allowed to share in communion?"
