Book excerpt: In the tradition of T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) and Robert Graves is A. Hamilton Gibbs' classic World War I memoir of his time in service to king and country. With humor, intelligence, sorrow, and bitterness he truthfully, nakedly, vividly, reveals the experience not only of one soldier in the British Army, but of thousands, and hundreds of thousands. "It was the first time I'd seen men killed and it left me silent, angry. Why 'go out' like that on some damned Serbian hill? What was it all about that everybody was trying to kill everybody else? Wasn't the sun shining and the world beautiful? What was this disease that had broken out like a scab over the face of the world?--Why did those particular dots have to fall? Why not the ones a yard away? What was the law of selection? Was there a law? Did every bullet have its billet? Was there a bullet for the Colonel?--For me?--No. It was impossible! But then, why those others and which of us?" He was the brother of Cosmo Hamilton (playwright-novelist) and Sir Philip Gibbs (journalist-novelist). His novels include The Persistent Lovers (adapted into a 1922 film), Soundings (1925) and Chances (1930).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War as Seen Thru German Eyes: A Perspective Followed by an Addendum Which Points Out the Moral Contained in This Review After a brief space of but two months from the compilation of this little volume, a call for a second edition comes from an appreciative public, and I most gladly respond. This new edition is revised and somewhat enlarged, but remains what I meant it to be, a brief and sincere expression of my feelings and opinions, together with indisputable 'facts' regarding the great international struggle now going on in Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under Fire: With the 370th Infantry (8th I. N. G.) A. E. F.; Memoirs of the World War This book is not intended for general circulation, but for distribution among the members and friends of Berean, that it may be preserved for their children who in turn may know of the part played by this church in the great World War. How that for two years a loyal church and people carried on, while their leader and loved ones were fighting "Over There" that all men might be "Up," not "Some Men Down." To preserve intact the letters that the pastor wrote during the lull of battle, or while resting on the march toward the Rhine, and thus acquaint the folks at home of the hopes and fears, the joys and sorrows of their sons and husbands, as they marched toward victory. We claim no literary genius for this book. It is not written as a treatise on the war - but a simple narration of facts pertaining to the part played by the men of the 8th (370th) U. S. Infantry, composed largely of men from Berean Baptist Church and Congregation. We endeavor to show by concrete facts how despite the hardships and handicap of prejudice these men emerged from the World's great battle fields of Europe the most decorated Regiment in the A. E. F. Hence in reading the following pages look not to find aught save the plain unvarnished story of the dangers through which we successfully passed - the hardships we endured, and our ultimate victory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and the Weird Do you think there is anything In it. 9 He was a clean - set six -foot specimen of English manhood, an officer Of the R. F. A. Wounded at Mons, who spoke. I mean I haven't studied these subjects much - in fact, I haven't studied them at all. Sport is more in my line than spiritualism and that kind Of thing, but when you have experiences brought under your very nose again and again, you cannot help thinking there must be something in such things. He had just told me that in the last few minutes' sleep he managed to get on the march to Mons he dreamt that he was unable to sit his horse. The next day he was wounded inside his right knee, not seriously, but sufficient to stop him riding for a week or two. I should never have thought anything more of it - I mean, connecting the dream with the ill-luck - but in the South African campaign there were quite remarkable instances. You see, at such times when you are playing hide-and12 the uncanny 'under fire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wounded and a Prisoner of War Lyon and I were bathing close to the harbour entrance, we could see far out to sea a large ship, escorted by a destroyer. As the ship came nearer, her three decks appeared black with innumerable dots as if covered by an enormous swarm of bees, and when she passed the narrow entrance of the harbour we could see the khaki uniform and hear the sound of cheering. Cheering crowds lined the passage of, our troops, but it seemed to me that the people Showed little agitation or excitement, and that anxiety was the prevailing sentiment. News from the front there was none. No one knew where the front was. The Evening Paper, a single sheet, printed in large characters on one Side only, confined itself to recording that Liege still held out, and that General French had gone to Paris. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Undertones of War I know that it is very local, limited, incoherent; that it is almost useless, in the sense that no one will read it who is not already aware of all the intimations and discoveries in it, and many more, by reason of having gone the same journey. No one? Some, I am sure; but not many. Neither will they understand that will not be all my fault. I know that memory has her little ways, and by now she has concealed precisely that look, that word, that coincidence of nature without and nature within which I long to remember. Within the space of even one year, this divinity seems to me to take a perverse pleasure in playing with her votaries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Devil's Own: A Romance of the Black Hawk War Even with my small knowledge of such things it was plain enough to be seen there existed deadly hatred be tween these two, and that Keokuk's desire for peace with the whites alone postponed an outbreak. I knew then but little of the.cause. The Indian tongue was,1 strange to me, and the interpreter failed to make clear thé under lying motive, yet I managed to gather that, in spite of treaty, Black Hawk refused to leave his oldtime hunting grounds to the east of the river, and openly threatened war. The commandant trusted Keokuk, with faith that his peaceful counsels would prevail; but when Black Hawk angrily left the chamber and my eyes followed him to his waiting canoe, my mind was convinced that this was not destined to be the end-that only force of arms would ever tame his savage spirit. Book Christmas in Germany

  • Author : Joe Perry
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2010-09-27

Download or read book Christmas in Germany written by Joe Perry and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For poets, priests, and politicians--and especially ordinary Germans--in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the image of the loving nuclear family gathered around the Christmas tree symbolized the unity of the nation at large. German Christmas was supposedly organic, a product of the winter solstice rituals of pagan "Teutonic" tribes, the celebration of the birth of Jesus, and the age-old customs that defined German character. Yet, as Joe Perry argues, Germans also used these annual celebrations to contest the deepest values that held the German community together: faith, family, and love, certainly, but also civic responsibility, material prosperity, and national belonging. This richly illustrated volume explores the invention, evolution, and politicization of Germany's favorite national holiday. According to Perry, Christmas played a crucial role in public politics, as revealed in the militarization of "War Christmas" during World War I and World War II, the Nazification of Christmas by the Third Reich, and the political manipulation of Christmas during the Cold War. Perry offers a close analysis of the impact of consumer culture on popular celebration and the conflicts created as religious, commercial, and political authorities sought to control the holiday's meaning. By unpacking the intimate links between domestic celebration, popular piety, consumer desires, and political ideology, Perry concludes that family festivity was central in the making and remaking of public national identities.

Book Charisma and Disenchantment The Vocation Lectures

Download or read book Charisma and Disenchantment The Vocation Lectures written by Max Weber and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of two celebrated lectures on politics, academia, and the disenchantment of the world. The German sociologist Max Weber is one of the most venturesome, stimulating, and influential theorists of the modern condition. Among his most significant works are the so-called vocation lectures, published shortly after the end of World War I and delivered at the invitation of a group of student activists. The question the students asked Weber to address was simple and haunting: In a modern world characterized by the division of labor, economic expansion, and unrelenting change, was it still possible to consider an academic or political career as a genuine calling? In response Weber offered his famous diagnosis of “the disenchantment of the world,” along with a challenging account of the place of morality in the classroom and in research. In his second lecture he introduced the notion of political charisma, assigning it a central role in the modern state, even as he recognized that politics is more than anything “a slow and difficult drilling of holes into hard boards.” Damion Searls’s new translation brings out the power and nuance of these celebrated lectures. Paul Reitter and Chad Wellmon’s introduction describes their historical and biographical background, reception, and influence. Weber’s effort to rethink the idea of a public calling at the start of the tumultuous twentieth century is revealed to be as timely and stirring as ever.
