Download or read book Punishment and Retribution written by Leo Zaibert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions of punishment typically assume that punishment is criminal punishment carried out by the State. Punishment is, however, a richer phenomenon and it occurs in many contexts. This book contains a general account of punishment which overcomes the difficulties of competing accounts. Recognizing punishment's manifoldness is valuable not merely in contributing to conceptual clarity, but in that this recognition sheds light on the complicated problem of punishment's justification. Insofar as they narrowly presuppose that punishment is criminal punishment, most apparent solutions to the tension between consequentialism and retributivism are rather unenlightening if we attempt to apply them in other contexts. Moreover, this presupposition has given rise to an unwieldy variety of accounts of retributivism which are less helpful in contexts other than criminal punishment. Treating punishment comprehensibly helps us to better understand how it differs from similar phenomena, and to carry on the discussion of its justification fruitfully.

Book Christ and the Judgment of God

Download or read book Christ and the Judgment of God written by Stephen Travis and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this scholarly study Stephen Travis examines the role of retribution in New Testament theologies of judgment. This long awaited second edition includes three entirely new chapters as well as being completely revised and updated. Travis' main thesis is that New Testament theologies of judgment are more fundamentally relational than retributive. He argues that while elements of retribution are present in each "strand" of the New Testament, they are remarkably infrequent, in view of their prominence in the Jewish and Greco-Roman worlds. He argues that both in Paul and in the gospels one's relationship to God, through Christ, is the criterion of judgment; and the ultimate outcome of the judgment is conceived in terms of that relationship.

Book excerpt: It is a blessing to know that God have promised to all his servants these significant words according to (Isaiah-54:17) "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the hertiage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord." How often, have you looked back over your own life, and thought about all of the times, that people you thought cared for and loved you: both family and so called friends, and have without doubt learned that they really didn't? How often, have you looked back over your life, and come to the realization, that many of these very same people, the devil formed into a weapon against you? Nevertheless, God delivered you out of their grasp, every single time! They might have been allowed to even, as the devil was allowed, to "touch your physical body," but not your soul! God would not permit, "the hands of the wicked to take you away (by taking your very life)! It never amaze me, how many people that truely care and love you, both family and friends: you probably, can count on one hand! These attack, when you are in moments of weaknesses in your life, even as Christians, we stumble at times being imperfect, yet God know our hearts (minds) and therefore deliver us out of the hand of the enemy every time! When I look at the lives of God's servants throughout the scriptures; I find where this very thing, happend in their lives with both their family, so called friends, and yes, their enemies! The devil, used such people as a weapon against God's servants, however, God delivered them each time, out of their hands even in moments of both physical and spiritual weakness! God delivered them, because they obeyed God, and did not try to revenge themselves but rather gave place to God's divine retribution! You and I must do the same: we must give place to God's wrath as we wait patiently for God to take vengeance on the devil, the demon, and people used as weapons to do us evil. Scripture instruct us as to how we are to respond to such treatment from such people: if they hunger, we are to feed them; if they thirst, we are to give them drink and wait on the Lord! Therefore, don't trouble yourself about your enemies, or their evil devices: for in due time, God, will fulfill his promises and take divine retribution! Just say to yourself, "Avenge Not Yourselves!" This book will remind you of the promises of God in your life in keeping God's conditions to receive God's promises: it is an inspiring book which will encourage you, strengthen your faith in God's promises, and will assist you with putting your very life completely in God's divine care!

Book Beyond Retribution

Download or read book Beyond Retribution written by Christopher D. Marshall and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently a growing number of Christians have actively promoted the concept of "restorative justice" and attempted to develop programs for dealing with crime based on restorative principles. But is this approach truly consistent with the teaching of Scripture? To date, very little has been done to test this claim. Beyond Retribution fills a gap by plumbing the New Testament on the topics of crime, justice, and punishment. Christopher Marshall first explores the problems involved in applying ethical teachings from the New Testament to mainstream society. He then surveys the extent to which the New Testament addresses criminal justice issues, looking in particular at the concept of the justice of God in the teachings of Paul and Jesus. He also examines the topic of punishment, reviewing the debate in social thinking over the ethics and purpose of punishment -- including capital punishment -- and he advocates a new concept of "restorative punishment." The result of this engaging work is a biblically based challenge to imitate the way of Christ in dealing with both victims and offenders. - Publisher

Book Post mortem Divine Retribution

Download or read book Post mortem Divine Retribution written by Angukali Rotokha and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a Christian understanding of divine judgement tends to focus on the afterlife, the Hebrew Bible is far more concerned with divine retribution as something experienced in this life. Yet if the same God enacts both, should there not be significant continuity between biblical accounts of divine retribution, whether experienced in this world or the hereafter? In this study, Dr. Angukali Rotokha provides an overview of Old Testament and Second Temple sources that express conceptions of post-mortem judgement. Alongside these passages, she examines the perspective on judgement presented in Deuteronomy, with its orientation towards divine retribution as experienced on this side of death. She explores Deuteronomy’s varying emphases on the impersonal, anthropocentric, theocentric, and limited aspects of divine retribution, as well as the relevance of these conceptions to the descriptions of post-mortem judgement found in Isaiah, Daniel, 1 Enoch, and 2 Maccabees. In clarifying points of continuity and discontinuity between earthly and post-mortem divine retribution, she provides a foundation for deeper insight into the Judeo-Christian understanding of both God’s judgement and God’s grace.
