Book A Dish of Orts Annotated Edition

Download or read book A Dish of Orts Annotated Edition written by George MacDonald and published by Cranberry Classics. This book was released on 2022-07-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About A Dish of Orts Read the thoughts of the man who influenced three generations of philosophers and writers. Lovers of fantasy, literary apologetics, and Christian thought will appreciate A Dish of Orts, MacDonald’s work on using the imagination to lift and enliven the mind. George MacDonald, considered the pioneer of the fantasy genre, had an impact on the mind and imaginations of some of the most influential Christian writers of the 20th century. C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, and J.R.R. Tolkien all were greatly impacted by both MacDonald’s imaginative fiction as well as his sermons and social commentary. At the hub of the English Victorian literary circles, MacDonald was friends with many of the literary luminaries of his day such as Poet Laureate Alfred Tennyson, William Thackeray, John Ruskin, as well as many others.. Lovers of Alice in Wonderland have George MacDonald to thank for its publication after Lewis Carroll (the pen name for C.L. Dodgson) was encouraged to publish the story after its enthusiastic reception by MacDonald's children. MacDonald was so widely regarded, that upon his passing, G.K. Chesteron said of him, "George MacDonald was one of the three or four greatest men of the nineteenth century." This great man is gone, but his works remain. A Dish of Orts is a collection of essays by George MacDonald on topics ranging from imagination to Shakespeare, from poetry to living the true Christian life. This new annotated edition bridges the gap for 21st century readers to MacDonald’s 19th century world.

Book Biblical Wisdom and the Victorian Literary Imagination

Download or read book Biblical Wisdom and the Victorian Literary Imagination written by Denae Dyck and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the creative thought that arose in response to 19th-century religious controversies, this book demonstrates that the pressures exerted by historical methods of biblical scholarship prompted an imaginative recovery of wisdom literature. During the Victorian period, new approaches to the interpretation of sacred texts called into question traditional ideas about biblical inspiration, motivating literary transformations of inherited symbols, metaphors, and forms. Drawing on the theoretical work of Paul Ricoeur, Denae Dyck considers how Victorian writers from a variety of belief positions used wisdom literature to reframe their experiences of questioning, doubt, and uncertainty: Elizabeth Barrett Browning, George MacDonald, George Eliot, John Ruskin, and Olive Schreiner. This study contributes to the reassessment of historical and contemporary narratives of secularization by calling attention to wisdom literature as a vital, distinctive genre that animated the search for meaning within an increasingly ideologically diverse world.

Download or read book The Annotated Wizard of Oz written by Lyman Frank Baum and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2000 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first striking thing about this book is its elegant dust jacket made to look like a copper plate. But the eye candy stretches past the front cover, nearly every page with either color illustrations or distinctive frames, fleurons, and figures around the text. Not surprising to those who've taken some literature classes, the annotations following a page of text are often far longer than whatever bit of text they illustrate. But if the reader should find academicism beside the point, annotations are easy to skip because Baum's story is written in larger type. This edition is for both kids and kiddie litters, the latter interested in such tidbits as the Dorothy-type farmgirl character called Dot, Dolly, and Doris in other works by Frank Baum, and the reigning theory that Dorothy lived in Kansas, yes, but more specifically, Topeka. Reprinted from the 1900 edition with many of the original drawings by W.W. Denslow. Oversize: 9.5x10.5". Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Book George MacDonald s Children s Fantasies and the Divine Imagination

Download or read book George MacDonald s Children s Fantasies and the Divine Imagination written by Colin N. Manlove and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great Victorian Christian author George MacDonald is the wellspring of the modern fantasy genre. In this book Colin Manlove offers explorations of MacDonald's eight shorter fairy tales and his longer stories At the Back of the North Wind, The Princess and the Goblin, The Wise Woman, and The Princess and Curdie. MacDonald saw the imagination as the source of fairy tales and of divine truth together. For he believed that God lives in the depths of the human mind and "sends up from thence wonderful gifts into the light of the understanding." This makes MacDonald that very rare thing: a writer of mystical fiction whose work can give us experience of the divine. Throughout his children's fantasy stories MacDonald is describing the human and divine imagination. In the shorter tales he shows how the imagination has different regions and depths, each able to shift into the other. With the longer stories we see the imagination in relation to other aspects of the self and to its position in the world. Here the imagination is portrayed as often embattled in relation to empiricism, egotism, and greed.

Book Divine Ideas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas M. Ward
  • Publisher : Elements in Religion and Monot
  • Release : 2020-09-03
  • ISBN : 1108819699
  • Pages : 81 pages

Download or read book Divine Ideas written by Thomas M. Ward and published by Elements in Religion and Monot. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element defends a version of the classical theory of divine ideas, the containment exemplarist theory of divine ideas. The classical theory holds that God has ideas of all possible creatures, that these ideas partially explain why God's creation of the world is a rational and free personal action, and that God does not depend on anything external to himself for having the ideas he has. The containment exemplarist version of the classical theory holds that God's own nature is the exemplar of all possible creatures, and therefore that God's ideas of possible creatures are in some sense ideas of himself. Containment exemplarism offers a monotheism fit for metaphysics, insofar as it is coherent, simple, and explanatorily powerful; and offers a metaphysics fit for monotheism, insofar as it leaves God truly worthy of the unconditional worship which Christians, along with Jews and Muslims, aspire to offer to God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both children's literature and fantasy literature have become established as genre for critical study in recent years, especially in the United States. As one of the outstanding children's authors of the nineteenth century and a pioneer of fantasy writing, MacDonald has become the focus of increased attention. As an acknowledged influence on many authors who came after him--authors such as E. Nesbit, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, W. H. Auden, and T. S. Eliot--MacDonald is one of the rare writers whose work is a starting point for evaluating the achievements of others. New forms of critical theory--Jungian, psychoanalytic, and feminist--turning towards the exploration of sexuality and the fantastic have also found fitting subjects in MacDonald's texts. This volume studies these developments and also the growing acknowledgment that MacDonald was a Scottish writer and a Victorian. His enduring works have been his children's books At the Back of the North Wind, The Princess and the Goblin, The Princess and Curdie, and the fairy tales of The Golden Key. His two adult fantasy novels, Phantasties and Lilith, are now recognized as classics of their kind.

Book Headspace Analysis of Foods and Flavors

Download or read book Headspace Analysis of Foods and Flavors written by Russell L. Rouseff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Headspace gas analysis is an analytical technique that has been successfully applied to food flavors for over 20 years but has experienced a resurgence of interest and innovation in recent years. In its truest form, headspace analysis represents the direct collection and analysis of the mixture of vapors in the space immediately above a food or beverage. The technique offers several advantages for workers interested in how a product smells and ultimately tastes. It offers the advantages of speed, simplicity, and, more importantly, represents the aroma profile a consumer is likely to experience just before consuming the product. Since only volatile components are collected, the sample is totally free of nonvolatile residues which commonly plague comparison liquid-liquid extracts of the same product. This is the first book devoted to headspace analysis in foods and beverages in more than 20 years. The publication contains chapters on the basic theory of headspace analysis, as well as the theory and application of newly developed headspace techniques, such as solid phase micro extraction, SPME and electronic noses. New concentrating and desorption techniques are described in addition to a raft of food applications including tomato and citrus juices, alcoholic beverages, baguettes, dairy products, lipids, grill flavoring, baked potato, and meat. Chapters on off-flavors as well as aroma-food matrix interactions are also included. "This is the bible of headspace analysis. If you are involved in, or planning on becoming involved, or want to learn more about, this incredible subject , then buy this book immediately!" – Aubrey Parsons, governing council member, International Union for Food Science and Technology
