Book May Christians Dance

Download or read book May Christians Dance written by James Hall Brookes and published by . This book was released on 1869 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a typical example of the antidance literature that was published during the nineteenth century. Although Brookes provides a weak defense of dancing, his final conclusion is that the large assemblies, indelicate dressing, "unwarrantable freedom of intercourse between the sexes," as well as uncontrolled excitement, leads to a thorough worldliness and, ultimately, to the forgetfulness of God. The manual was reissued in the 1890s under the title The modern dance.

The position assumed by the text, would exclude Dancing from the list of Christian diversions, even if it could be shown that it is innocent in itself. This, however, is a point which the worldling labors in vain to prove by the most skilful use of religious sophistry. Persons on whose judgment we rely with great confidence in matters of this sort, have abandoned the idea which they, in common with others, once entertained, that Dancing, if properly regulated, might be harmless. Book Social Dancing Inconsistent with a Christian Profession and Baptismal Vows

Download or read book Social Dancing Inconsistent with a Christian Profession and Baptismal Vows written by Benjamin Morgan Palmer and published by . This book was released on 1849 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taken from a sermon delivered 17 June 1849, Palmerʼs book is typical of midnineteenth-century antidance literature. He declares that the seventeen references to dance in the Bible are all performed by one sex, in open fields, and in broad daylight. This, Palmer (1818-1902) concludes, is not the case with balls, in which the sexes dance together, in closed quarters, and at night. The author declares that human nature is "fallen and depraved, and subject to the domination of wicked passions," therefore, attending balls is promiscuous, demoralizing, and inconsistent with baptismal vows.

Book Theatre and Its Other

Download or read book Theatre and Its Other written by Elisa Ganser and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Dance? What is Theatre? What is the boundary between enacting a character and narrating a story? When does movement become tinted with meaning? And when does beauty shine alone as if with no object? These universal aesthetic questions find a theoretically vibrant and historically informed set of replies in the oeuvre of the eleventh-century Kashmirian author Abhinavagupta. The present book offers the first critical edition, translation, and study of a crucial and lesser known passage of his commentary on the Nāṭyaśāstra, the seminal work of Sanskrit dramaturgy. The nature of dramatic acting and the mimetic power of dance, emotions, and beauty all play a role in Abhinavagupta’s thorough investigation of performance aesthetics, now presented to the modern reader.
