This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Spelling and Spelling Reform The subject Of spelling reform is not, strictly Speaking, a soul-stirring one, nor is any possible treatment Of it likely to contribute to the gayety Of nations. If any Of the chapters contained in the present volume be Of the slightest in terest in itself, that on the orthographic situa tion is assuredly not the one. On the other hand, if there be anything Of value in the work, that same chapter has, as I look at it, far the most value. There is in it, indeed, nothing original. The numerous facts it contains are to be found scattered up and down the pages Of various volumes - particularly in the intro ductions to the larger dictionaries, and in orthographic and orthoepic essays produced at various periods. But SO far as I know, this is the first attempt ever made to collect and com bine and, above all, to put in a form, easily com prehensible by the general reader, the widely scattered facts which go to Show the precise character and characteristics Of English orthog raphy, and to bring out with distinctness the real nature Of the deep-seated disease under which it labors. At all events, Whether or not I have been anticipated in the presentation Of these facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Simplified Spelling: Based on the Publications of the United States Bureau of Education and the Rules of the American Philological Association and the Simplified Spelling Board In the compilation of this book the writer is not concerned with the reasons why this or that word should be simplified. This phase has already received the attention of many of the foremost scholars in English linguistry. All he has aimed to do is to provide in one volume a guide to the forms that words take when the rules for simplification recommended by these scholars are applied. Book The Problem of Spelling Reform Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Problem of Spelling Reform Classic Reprint written by W. W. Skeat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Spelling Reform At this point I pause awhile, in order to point out two great advantages that would certainly result from the introduction of even such small instalments of spelling reform as those to which I have just drawn attention. The first is that these partial reforms would necessarily involve the disuse of a large number of useless letters. In this way more matter would be got into a page, and some labour in the composi tion of the type would be saved; and as this would happen in every case, whether the book be small or great, it might very easily save every printer and publisher a considerable sum of money. It would not be surprising if the aggregate saving, in the course of a year, throughout the British Empire, were to amount to some thousands of pounds. Every one would gain by it; the writer would have fewer letters to write, the printer would have fewer to print, and the reader would have fewer to spell and read. Many ambiguities would disappear, and the written record would exhibit a closer approximation to the sounds which it professes to represent. The second is that the task of learning to read would be consider ably simplified, and the time taken to achieve that task would be considerably shortened, to the equal delight and profit both of teacher and pupil. In this case there can be no doubt at all that the sums thus saved to the nation would be very considerable. Book The North American Spelling Book Conformed to Worcester s Dictionary

Download or read book The North American Spelling Book Conformed to Worcester s Dictionary written by Levi Washburn Leonard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Spelling Book, Conformed to Worcester's Dictionary: With a Progressive Series of Easy Reading Lessons The North American Spelling Book, as is stated on the title page, is conformed to Worcester's Dictionary, a work of superior merit and ac curacy, and extensively used in the United' States. By permission of Mr. Worcester, his system of notation has been applied to the spelling lessons in this book, and in preparing the work, it has been the compiler's object to adhere strictly to the principles of the Dictionary. In some instances, however, vowels in unaccented syllables have the mark of a distinct sound, which in the Dictionary are marked as obscure. The' marks for' the capitals C and G hard, and Th soft or flat, are changed for those used in Worcester's Universal and Critical Dictionary, a new and valuable work, in which the orthography and pronunciation of more than one hun dred thousand words are given with authorities in doubtful or disputed cases. It is designed to be a complete glossary to all English books that are now read. With respect to the division of words into syllables, the Dictionary has not always been followed. The object of a Spelling Book is not the same as that of a Dictionary, and the words, therefore, have been divided in such a manner as seemed most likely to lead to a correct pronunciation.
