Book A Culture of Desert Survival

Download or read book A Culture of Desert Survival written by Clinton Bailey and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 3000 years the Bedouin people have conveyed the wisdom of their culture from one generation to the next by means of spoken proverbs. This anthology presents 1,350 of these proverbs, almost none of which have been heard outside the Bedouin world before. Clinton Bailey has collected Bedouin proverbs and documented the life and survival techniques of this hardy people during more than thirty years of fieldwork in the Negev and Sinai deserts. His is the only extensive written record of the rapidly disappearing Bedouin culture. The rich treasury of proverbs is organized around various subjects relating to the primary theme of Bedouin life: survival under harsh desert conditions. Bailey presents each proverb in Arabic and English, situates it within Bedouin culture, and explains how it relates to economic, psychological, or social survival. He provides an unprecedented view of Bedouin life as well as insights into the wider Arab world and the Arabic language.

Book SUN SAND AND SURVIVAL An Analysis Of Survival Experiences In Desert Areas

Download or read book SUN SAND AND SURVIVAL An Analysis Of Survival Experiences In Desert Areas written by Dr Richard A. Howard and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desert survival presents unique problems not met in other non-temperate areas. Recognizing this, the Arctic, Desert, Tropic Information Center commissioned Dr. Richard A. Howard to assemble and analyze desert survival experiences of World War II, for the purpose of increasing our knowledge of desert survival techniques and procedures. To know what World War II survivors did, what they thought, and what they recommended after having experienced desert survival conditions is of paramount importance. Sun, Sand and Survival relates and evaluates these experiences. Dr. Howard, ADTIC consultant, has had long experience in the survival training of military personnel. He is the author of the ADTIC Publication T-100 999 Survived which analyzes 1,000 tropical survival experiences. Dr. Howard’s desert study analyzes 382 successful desert survival episodes and mention is made of an additional 142 individuals who were lost. The stories show how men without desert background or mental conditioning met their desert problems. They include examples of men who left their group and were never heard of again. In the light of our present knowledge of the water requirements of the human body, we know that many could have survived had they had a better understanding of the requirements imposed by the desert. More survivors would have returned in better health and endured less discomfort if advance knowledge had been readily available.

Book SAS Desert Survival

Download or read book SAS Desert Survival written by Barry Davies and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone venturing into the desert, either by crossing on foot, vehicle, or in an aircraft (other than a commercial flight) should be prepared. Desert regions are those least likely to have an easily available source of water. Nevertheless, the survivor must find a water supply or they will die. No matter how abundant the rest of your survival resources are, without water your time is limited. To travel or stay put is one of the great dilemmas any survivor must face. The factors governing any decision should be based on where you are, your chances of survival if you stay put, where you intend moving to and the related hazards in getting there. Without communications it is difficult to assess whether there will be a rescue attempt, and even if there is, it would be presumptive to believe that they will locate you. Additionally, having the physical and mental ability, plus the resources to travel and reach a given point accurately is also a major factor. The SAS Guide to Desert Survival prepares the traveler for any situation they may find themselves in while venturing across desert and arid areas. It will explain the need for an immediate plan, as time will be against you, as well as how to dress for the ultimate protection from the sun and the cold (yes, deserts get very cold at night). The book will show you how and when to travel, as well as how to navigate a route to safety. The desert has two main advantages: the sun and the general clearness of visibility; a simple heliograph will flash a signal to both ground and air rescue services up to twenty-five miles away.

Trapping Food in the Desert Extremely easy Hopi bird snare Making Slipknots Making a Slingshot Conclusion Author Bio- Introduction I remember seeing Lost in the Desert as a child, and there are just some scenes which I remember. The father of a child lost in the desert believes that his child has survived a plane crash. So he gets millions of leaflets printed and airdropped all over the desert, with survival tips to his son, reassuring him that his father will find him, and all he has to do is survive. Dirkie and his dog survived - this movie -made by Jamie Uys who then produced the hugely successful The Gods Must Be Crazy - is based on a true story. So the first point is, you need to have a will to survive. Movies and reality apart, how is it possible for people to survive in the desert, especially in adverse weather conditions for centuries? How is it that people in the Kalahari, in the Sahara or in the Thar desert do not mind living out their lives in such bleak and harsh conditions? Fortunately, a majority of our 21st century world is still green and does not consist of miles and miles of land with no water and no food in sight. Well there is a slight lack of knowledge here. There is food and water in the desert. It depends on us to know how to get it. This book is going to give you information, especially useful tips and techniques, on how to preserve you and survive in desert conditions, especially when you are on limited food and water supplies.

Book excerpt: An “authoritative, comprehensive, well written, and entertaining” guide to staying alive in the desert from a Texas Parks and Wildlife veteran (Library Journal). Remote desert locations, including the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico, southern Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, draw adventurers of all kinds, from the highly skilled and well prepared to urban cowboys who couldn’t lead themselves, much less a horse, to water. David Alloway’s goal in this book is to help all of them survive when circumstances beyond their control strand them in the desert environment. In simple, friendly language, enlivened with humor and stories from his own extensive experience, Alloway—a naturalist and search-and-rescue veteran who’s worked with the US Air Force on survival skills—here offers a practical, comprehensive handbook for both short-term and long-term survival in the Chihuahuan and other North American deserts.
