Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary: On the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah One of the editors of the International Critical Commentary, the Rev. Professor Charles A. Briggs, D.D., D. Litt., died while this volume was going through the press. I was fortunate in having the benefit of his editorial supervision of the manuscript and of a part of the proof. So the work was well under way when the message came that he was too ill to read proof any longer and that I must assume full responsibility. I have done my best that his illness should result in no loss to this work. In the death of Dr. Briggs, American Biblical scholarship has lost one of its ablest and most widely known representatives. He was called upon to suffer much for his convictions, and he did suffer bravely. Nor did he suffer in vain. He had the satisfaction of justification in the end; for the views which aroused so much opposition have met with general acceptance. Dr. Briggs was really conservative; he formed his opinions slowly and deliberately; but once they were formed, he would yield them only to new evidence. I am glad to have this opportunity to express my appreciation of the character and attainments of Dr. Briggs and the great privilege I have enjoyed in frequent friendly association with him. The preparation of this volume has occupied my available time for several years. I should have despaired of finishing what proved to be a far bigger task than I ever anticipated save for my return, two years ago, to the professorial office so that my summers were really free for work. The task proved unexpectedly big, for I discovered early in my studies that Ezra-Nehemiah bristled with hard problems which had not really been solved. Book The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah

Download or read book The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah written by F. Charles Fensham and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1982 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing clear exposition based on solid contemporary scholarship, this commentary by F. Charles Fensham examines the books of Ezra and Nehemiah--two books of Scripture that are especially important for understanding the last century of Old Testament Jewish history and for marking the beginnings of Judaism. A biblical scholar well known for his expertise in ancient Near Eastern studies, especially Ugaritic, Fensham places Ezra and Nehemiah against the ancient Near Eastern environment. In his introduction Fensham discusses the original unity of the books as well as the problems of authorship. He then treats the historical and religious background of the books, taking special note of the development of a Jewish religious society in postexilic times. Text and language are examined next, followed by a thorough bibliography. The commentary proper, based on Fensham's own fresh translation of the biblical texts, is richly documented and displays cautious good judgment, willingness to consider different options, a sensible approach, and keen insight into the religious meaning of these key Hebrew texts.

Book The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah

Download or read book The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah written by Frederick William Schultz and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented here, in paperback for the first time, is John Peter Lange's 'Theologischhomiletisches Bibelwerk'. Intended to help preachers prepare sermons the commentary series is essentially biblical and evangelical catholic. This nineteenth-century commentary has served as a standard reference for more than a century. Many early reviewers regarded Schaff's edition with his additional material as superior to the original. It has proven to be a complete and useful commentary and continues to prove especially valuable to ministers. It contains critical annotations of the text and its translation, and a threefold commentary, exegetical, doctrinal, and homiletical. Under these three heads the text is viewed from every aspect.
