Book Open Veins of Latin America

Download or read book Open Veins of Latin America written by Eduardo Galeano and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation. Thus he is concerned with gold and silver, cacao and cotton, rubber and coffee, fruit, hides and wool, petroleum, iron, nickel, manganese, copper, aluminum ore, nitrates, and tin. These are the veins which he traces through the body of the entire continent, up to the Rio Grande and throughout the Caribbean, and all the way to their open ends where they empty into the coffers of wealth in the United States and Europe. Weaving fact and imagery into a rich tapestry, Galeano fuses scientific analysis with the passions of a plundered and suffering people. An immense gathering of materials is framed with a vigorous style that never falters in its command of themes. All readers interested in great historical, economic, political, and social writing will find a singular analytical achievement, and an overwhelming narrative that makes history speak, unforgettably. This classic is now further honored by Isabel Allende's inspiring introduction. Universally recognized as one of the most important writers of our time, Allende once again contributes her talents to literature, to political principles, and to enlightenment.

Book Missions and Empire

  • Author : Norman Etherington
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2005-07-14
  • ISBN : 9780191531064
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Missions and Empire written by Norman Etherington and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive expansion of Christianity in Africa and Asia during the last two centuries constitutes one of the most remarkable cultural transformations in the history of mankind. Because it coincided with the spread of European economic and political hegemony, it tends to be taken for granted that Christian missions went hand in hand with imperialism and colonial conquest. In this book historians survey the relationship between Christian missions and the British Empire from the seventeenth century to the 1960s and treat the subject thematically, rather than regionally or chronologically. Many of these themes are treated at length for the first time, relating the work of missions to language, medicine, anthropology, and decolonization. Other important chapters focus on the difficult relationship between missionaries and white settlers, women and mission, and the neglected role of the indigenous evangelists who did far more than European or North American missionaries to spread the Christian religion - belying the image of Christianity as the 'white man's religion'.

Book Frames Within Frames

  • Author : Suzanne Oberhardt
  • Publisher : Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Frames Within Frames written by Suzanne Oberhardt and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art museum has changed shape. Its bricks have been flattened on paper, celluloid, and plastic and diffused into virtual spaces. The relationship between flesh and environment has been irrevocably changed as people no longer have to attend the architectural structure of the art museum to know the art museum. It recurs infinitely in our daily lives - on television, movie, and computer screens; in books and magazines; and on urban artifacts from matchbook covers to billboards. These representations may not be real art museums per se, but they provide the basis upon which most people now partake of the museum's sacred rituals. Suzanne Oberhardt offers a new way of seeing the art museum as it is transformed and reinvented in the twenty-first century.

Book The Serpent Symbol in Tradition

Download or read book The Serpent Symbol in Tradition written by Charles William Dailey and published by Arktos Media Limited. This book was released on 2022-01-20 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of traditional serpent and dragon symbolism, based in part upon the concepts and observations of René Guénon, Mircea Eliade, and various other relevant researchers. Serpent and dragon symbolism is ubiquitous in the art and mythology of premodern cultures around the world. Over the centuries, conflicting hypotheses have been proposed to interpret this symbolism which, while illuminating, have proved insufficient to the task of revealing a singular meaning for the vast majority of examples. In The Serpent Symbol in Tradition, Dr. Dailey argues that, in what the symbolist René Guénon and the historian of religions Mircea Eliade have called 'traditional' or 'archaic' societies, the serpent/dragon transculturally symbolizes matter, a state of being that is constituted by the perception of the physical world as chaotic in comparison to what traditional peoples believed to be the 'higher' meta-physical source of 'nature.' Beyond purporting to resolve some of the mystery of the ancient and varied symbolism of the serpent/dragon, The Serpent Symbol in Tradition strives to interpret the symbolic meanings of premodern artifacts and narratives as well as provide a study of the origination, and ancient human awareness, of the mentioned state of matter.
