If the word is indeed part of the vocabulary of the novel, he then would turn to its alphabetical listing in the verbal index and the line numbers in which it appears. Book Empire and Pilgrimage in Conrad and Joyce

Download or read book Empire and Pilgrimage in Conrad and Joyce written by Agata Szczeszak-Brewer and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Original and significant. This book shows us how Conrad and Joyce manipulate representations of imperialist belief in the sacred to indict Western culture for its racist colonization. This striking reading of modernism emphasizes Conrad's and Joyce's use of chaos in general and pilgrimage in particular in terms of mapmaking, racial denigration, and strategies of power. Szczeszak-Brewer makes spectacular connections between sacred language, nation building, and literary representation."--Georgia Johnston, author of The Formation of Twentieth-Century Queer Autobiography Though they were born a generation apart, Joseph Conrad and James Joyce shared similar life experiences and similar literary preoccupations. Both left their home countries at a relatively young age and remained lifelong expatriates. Empire and Pilgrimage in Conrad and Joyce offers a fresh look at these two modernist writers, revealing how their rejection of organized religion and the colonial presence in their native countries allowed them to destabilize traditional notions of power, colonialism, and individual freedom in their texts. Throughout, Agata Szczeszak-Brewer ably demonstrates the ways in which these authors grapple with the same issues--the grand narrative, paralysis, hegemonic practices, the individual's pilgrimage toward unencumbered self-definition--within the rigid bounds of imperial ideologies and myths. The result is an engaging and enlightening investigation of the writings of Conrad and Joyce and of the larger literary movement to which they belonged.

  • Pages : 127 pages

Download or read book Nostromo written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the century since its publication in 1904, Nostromo has taken its place among Conrad’s masterpieces as a panoramic novel of revolution and a profound meditation on history and the effects of “material interests” on human destiny. The eight new essays brought together in this volume examine the novel from various perspectives: as an epic, as a study in colonialism and the problem of “homecoming,” as an exploration of free will and determinism, as a textual artefact, and as a reflection upon earlier works of European literature by Coleridge, Pushkin, and others.

Book A Concordance to Conrad s The Rover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, as with the earlier volumes in the series, the reader of The Rover is here provided a Verbal Index, citing each type and its location, a Word Frequency Table, and a Field of Reference. Using the tables in this concordance, the reader should be better able to address the issue of style and determine on a more informed basis whether Conrad has deliberately eschewed the adjectival and even the figurative in favour of a lean, spare style, or whether he has simply tangled his style in rhetorical excesses and imprecisions.

This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the description of typical trends in development, formation and the present state of English Author Lexicography, the roots of which go back to concordances to the Bible and glossaries of the complete works of Chaucer (xvi c.). Part I, “Linguistic Dictionaries to English Writers,” presents lexicographic analysis of old and new concordances, indices, glossaries and lexicons of famous English writers with special reference to Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare, and Dickens. It presents a modern scene of author glossaries for unfamiliar words, terms and other groups of writers’ vocabulary (e.g. Shakespeare’s insults and his erotic language). The reader is offered a detailed review of author concordances, glossaries and lexicons on the Internet, along with criticism of printed dictionaries. Part II, “Encyclopedic Reference Works to English Writers,” deals with English author encyclopedic reference books, i.e. encyclopedias, guides and companions; dictionaries of characters and place names; quotations and proverbs, and Internet encyclopedic resources. The book also provides a comprehensive list of references on author lexicography and an Index of Dictionaries to the English Writers (xvi–xxi cc.), including 300 titles of linguistic and encyclopedic dictionaries, which is a reliable user guide in the world of English author lexicography.

Book From Sight through to In Sight

Download or read book From Sight through to In Sight written by Omar Sabbagh and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-01-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary study of the Impressionist/early Modernist works of Conrad and Ford, this book aims to show how the represented temporalities (whether to do with past, present, future experience within and without the novels, or logical/structural relations of ‘before’ and ‘after’) are at the core of the won effects of both authors’ oeuvres. Looking at such well-known works as Nostromo, The Good Soldier, The Fifth Queen, Parade’s End, the study makes use of philosophy (historical and contemporary), theology, psychoanalysis, and other sources, to re-describe, unlock and display the fertile ways in which time and historical experience are both manumitted within the tales analysed, and, recursively, within their reading experience. Ultimately, the two senses of ‘making you see’, from Conrad’s iconic Preface, are used as gambits to understand the ways in which these novels are metaphysically vibrant, symbolically hopeful- as against the more common interpretation of metaphysical dissolution and (over-determined) failure.

Book Conrad s Narrative Voice

Download or read book Conrad s Narrative Voice written by Werner Senn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werner Senn’s Conrad’s Narrative Voice draws on the methodology of linguistic stylistics and the analysis of narrative discourse to discuss Joseph Conrad’s perception of the role and the limitations of language. Tracing recurrent linguistic patterns allows Senn to demonstrate that Conrad’s view of the radical indeterminacy of the world is conveyed on the most basic levels of the author’s (often criticised) verbal style but permeates his work at all levels of the narrative. Detailed stylistic analysis also reveals the importance, to Conrad, of the spoken word, of oral communication. Senn argues that the narrators’ compulsive efforts to make their readers see and understand reflect Conrad’s ethics of human solidarity in a world he depicts as hostile, enigmatic and often senseless.
