The first part highlights youth sport in the Portuguese cultural context. The second part focuses on youth sport as a part of development, i.e., the learning of culturally appropriate behaviors, motivations, and so on. Book Participation Motivation in Sport

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Participation Motivation in Sport: A Comparative Study of Able-bodied and Disabled School-aged Children in Hong Kong submitted by Sit Hui Ping for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in November 1998 Studies examining sport and physical activity patterns and motivation of able- bodied and disabled children by a comparative analysis are limited. A random sample of 4,690 able-bodied and 242 children with physical handicap (PH), visual impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), mild grade handicap (MH), and maladjustment (MD) studying in Primary 5 to Secondary 7 were chosen. It was found that there were similar sport participation patterns for the able-bodied and disabled children. There was no evidence to support the stereotyped notion that children with disabilities are less active and less self-motivated due to their disabilities. Rather, the higher numbers of sport club memberships and lower dropout rates for the disabled children suggest that they are more intrinsically motivated, and their strengths of sport participation motives were stronger than those of the able-bodied group. The study also found that in general boys and younger children were more active, when compared to girls and older children, respectively. Gender role stereotyping was believed to be an important factor influencing children's sport participation behaviors and choices of activities. The disabled girls and seniors inparticular, were found to participate in fewer sports, reflecting the existence of the double effect of gender role stereotyping and disability, and the precious chance for disabled seniors to study at higher levels. In general respondents were fond of participating in and choosing the well-established and familiar sports in the location of "other" areas such as public playgrounds, which indicated their less formal, more spontaneous sport behaviors. The element of fun was the strongest motive of youth sport participation, whilst the lack of it resulted in sport attrition. Doing one's own thing was highly important for sport non-participation implying the notion that today's children are more individualistic and independent. In agreement with Barter's Competence Motivation Theory (1978, 1981), and Maehr and Nicholls' (1980) and Nicholls' (1984) Achievement Motivation Theory, the perception of one's physical ability (PPA) was found to be closely linked with children's participation behaviors and motivation. Children of higher PPA levels were indeed more positive and active in sport participation and had lower dropout rates than those of lower PPA levels. It was further established that the nature of disability affected the patterns, choices of physical activities, and sport motives. Book Positive Youth Development Through Sport

Download or read book Positive Youth Development Through Sport written by Nicholas L. Holt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Positive Youth Development title to focus on the role of sport, this book brings together high profile contributors from diverse disciplines to critically examine the ways in which sport can be and has been used to promote youth development. Young people are too frequently looked upon as problems waiting to be solved. From the perspective of Positive Youth Development (PYD), young people are understood to embody potential, awaiting development. Involvement with sport provides a developmental context that has been associated with PYD, but negative outcomes can also arise from sport participation and school PE. Sport itself does not lead to PYD; rather, it is the manner in which sport is structured and delivered to children that influences their development. Positive Youth Development Through Sport fills a void in the literature by bringing together experts from diverse disciplines to critically examine the ways in which sport can be and has been used to promote youth development.

Book Children in Sport

Download or read book Children in Sport written by Richard A. Magill and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This collection of essays cover the wide range of research into children and athletics from historical and future perspectives to the social context of athletes. Of particular importance are the sections on readiness participation, psychological issues, and social processes. The first group contains three essays which discuss the concept of readiness in competitive sports and critical periods in the child's development. These periods can affect competition and achievement motivation in relation to competition. The seven papers about psychological issues of sport competition cover the bulk of the research into children and sports. Primarily the effects of competitive stress on behaviors are discussed and models designed to reduce this stress are presented. The last section includes two relevant essays about socialization of children into the sports world and about sex differences and family influences on this socialization.

Book Young People s Involvement in Sport

Download or read book Young People s Involvement in Sport written by John Kremer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on survey data derived from face-to-face interviews with 2,400 schoolchildren, 600 four-day diaries and focus groups with both elite performers, coaches and parents, the book offers a comprehensive overview of young people's involvement in sport and physical activity in the 1990s. Deliberately set in the context of the literature on sport involvement and participation motivation, and alongside wider policy concerns, individual contributors each have accessed the data in order to address a particular substantive topic. Given the almost complete absence of hard data currently available in this field, the book should appeal not only to a local audience but to a wider international readership including sport scientists, sports' administrators, coaches, teachers and policy makers, indeed anyone with an interest in the who, what, why and how of young people's involvement in sport.
