Book A Comparison of the Curricula of the Top ranked Prelicensure Baccalaureate Nursing Programs in the United States

Download or read book A Comparison of the Curricula of the Top ranked Prelicensure Baccalaureate Nursing Programs in the United States written by Silvia Imanda and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What constitutes an ideal prelicensure nursing curriculum is not well understood. Specifically, what are the strategic curricular sequencing and curricular themes or focus might be included to contribute to producing high quality graduates? The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study investigation was to look at successful programs and identify effective curricular sequencing and curricular themes or focus that might be inferred to have contributed to producing high quality graduates. Seven top-ranked prelicensure baccalaureate nursing programs were selected based on three national college rankings services. Based on data from interviews and publicly accessible documents, seven case studies were compared and analyzed for curriculum components (didactic, clinical, and interdisciplinary activities) and performance (NCLEX-RN). Results showed a common curricular sequence in preparing nursing students through liberal education classes and the first three fundamental nursing courses (pharmacology, pathophysiology, and health assessment) along with a curricular focus in the AACN Essentials' theme of liberal education and generalist baccalaureate nursing. A few commonalities could be learned from these successful programs, such as the pharmacology course, interdisciplinary learning activities, and other pre-requisite courses (i.e. microbiology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology). Furthermore, the researcher found that state boards of nursing's requirement for minimum average NCLEX-RN passing rates were different. Researcher recommended further studies include exploring correlations between the respective state boards of nursing's approval requirement on NCLEX-RN passing rates and one's prelicensure BSN program performance.

Book Credentials Curriculum and Access

Download or read book Credentials Curriculum and Access written by Melinda Mechur Karp and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of how to best prepare nurses for practice continues to be debated extensively. The crux of the debate is whether a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) should be required of all registered nurses in the United States or whether an associate degree in nursing (ADN) and diploma programs adequately prepare novice nurses for practice. Most of the literature on the relative effectiveness of BSN and ADN programs is inconclusive or dated. Most relevant studies focus on one type of program and do not directly compare how BSN and ADN graduates perform on the job. The findings of the few studies that do compare outcomes of BSN and ADN programs are mixed. What the literature does suggest is that the differences between ADN and BSN programs may not greatly affect nurses' ability to perform basic nursing tasks and that both programs prepare registered nurses for entry-level positions in most health care settings. The following lessons for those involved in planning and delivering nursing education were identified from the literature: (1) move carefully and work together; (2) conduct further research and use it; (3) create clearer career ladders; (4) differentiate between novice and advanced practice; and (5) ease movement between the ADN and BSN. (Contains 60 references.) (MN).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.
