Book Waterfronts in Post Industrial Cities

Download or read book Waterfronts in Post Industrial Cities written by Richard Marshall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2004-01-14 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on waterfronts deal with a relatively narrow collection of cities and projects; one might describe them as the 'top ten' list of waterfront revitalisation projects. For instance, Boston and Baltimore are now the stuff of waterfront redevelopment legend. Waterfronts in Post-Industrial Cities is a second generation waterfront publication which reflects on recent and contemporary developments. Amsterdam, Boston, Genoa, Sydney and Vancouver are successful examples of cities that faced considerable challenges in their revitalisation efforts. Bilbao, Havana, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Shanghai are contemporary examples that represent the emerging contexts for waterfront revitalisation today. Four themes form the basis of this book and provide a structure for considering particular aspects of waterfront redevelopment - connection to the waterfront, remaking the city image on the waterfront, port and city relations and the new waterfronts in historic cities. Broad issues that might be applicable to a variety of situations are dealt with alongside specific city case studies.

Book The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity

Download or read book The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity written by Charles A. Laughlin and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese essay is arguably China’s most distinctive contribution to modern world literature, and the period of its greatest influence and popularity—the mid-1930s—is the central concern of this book. What Charles Laughlin terms "the literature of leisure" is a modern literary response to the cultural past that manifests itself most conspicuously in the form of short, informal essay writing (xiaopin wen). Laughlin examines the essay both as a widely practiced and influential genre of literary expression and as an important counter-discourse to the revolutionary tradition of New Literature (especially realistic fiction), often viewed as the dominant mode of literature at the time. After articulating the relationship between the premodern traditions of leisure literature and the modern essay, Laughlin treats the various essay styles representing different groups of writers. Each is characterized according to a single defining activity: "wandering" in the case of the Yu si (Threads of Conversation) group surrounding Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren; "learning" with the White Horse Lake group of Zhejiang schoolteachers like Feng Zikai and Xia Mianzun; "enjoying" in the case of Lin Yutang’s Analects group; "dreaming" with the Beijing school. The concluding chapter outlines the impact of leisure literature on Chinese culture up to the present day. The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity dramatizes the vast importance and unique nature of creative nonfiction prose writing in modern China. It will be eagerly read by those with an interest in twentieth-century Chinese literature, modern China, and East Asian or world literatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecosystems Research Center (ERC) was established at Cornell U ni versity in October 1980 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the goals of: 1. Identifying fundamental principles and concepts of ecosystems sci ence and the determination of their importance in understanding and pre dicting the responses of ecosystems to stress, the description of the basic mechanisms that operate within ecosystems, and an examination of the stability of ecosystem structure and function in the face of stress. 2. Testing the applicability of those theoretical concepts to problems of concern to the EPA through a consideration of retrospective and other case studies. In line with these goals, the Hudson River ecosystem provided the basis for the first major retrospective study undertaken by the ERC. The goal of the project was to develop recommendations concerning how ecosystem monitoring can and should be carried out in support of EPA's regulatory responsibilities. Our hope was and is that the experience gained from this study will be broadly applicable to a range of manage ment problems involving estuarine ecosystems, and will lead to more effective regulation.

Book Migration Tourism and Social Sustainability

Download or read book Migration Tourism and Social Sustainability written by Jaeyeon Choe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinctions between tourism and migration are increasingly blurred. Tourism often drives various forms of mobility, and an international workforce is essential to maintaining functioning tourism economies. This book explores intersections of tourism and migration, considering their relationships with and impacts on social sustainability. The chapters explore in a variety of contexts how the planning, development and governance of tourism affects the sustainability of communities, which consequently influences attitudes towards migrants and tourists. They also consider how migrant-local connections may evolve, creating opportunities for positive, symbiotic co-existence or intergroup tensions and exploitative relationships. The book paves the way for future work examining new forms and interactions between migration and tourism that contribute to social sustainability. This book will be of great value to students, academics, and researchers interested in tourism, geography, migration/diaspora studies and sociology. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.
