It is well known that FDI can complement local development efforts in a number of ways, including boosting export competitiveness; generating employment and strengthening the skills base; enhancing technological capabilities and increasing financial resources for development. Global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows rose modestly by 5 percent, to reach $1.24 trillion in 2010. While global industrial output and world trade are already back to their pre-crisis levels, FDI flows in 2010 remained some 15 percent below their pre-crisis average, and nearly 37 percent below their 2007 peak. UNCTAD predicts FDI flows will continue their recovery to reach $1.4-1.6 trillion, or the pre-crisis level, in 2011. They are expected to rise further to $1.7 trillion in 2012 and reach $1.9 trillion in 2013, the peak achieved in 2007.The service sector has attracted highest (21 percent) FDI inflows; then computer software, and hardware (9 percent), telecommunication sector (8 percent) and Housing and Real estate (7 percent) during 2008 to August 2010. Mauritius (42 percent to total inflows of FDI) has been largest investor in India, followed by Singapore (9 percent) during 2008 to August 2010 among top ten countries. China's highest FDI inflows in leasing and business service 30280.70 million USD in 2010. Second sector is Banking (8627.39) followed by wholesale and retail trade, mining, transport, storage and post etc. during the same period. In short, comparatively the global FDI inflow in China is highest than India in 2010. The sector wise FDI inflow show that, a highest FDI inflow to India is in housing and real estate. But China's FDI inflow is Business service and Banking in study period.

Book Comparative Analysis of FDI in China and India

Download or read book Comparative Analysis of FDI in China and India written by Swapna S. Sinha and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some emerging markets have been leaders in the world and have grown at a higher rate benefiting from higher Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) by Trans National Corporations (TNCs) and some have been laggards and have not able to attract as much FDI and grow that efficiently. Why China gets 60 billion dollars FDI annually as compared to India which does not even get 6 billion dollars, is an intriguing question? This dissertation explores the determinants of FDI in such emerging economies to answer the above question. What has India done till now to attract FDI? What has been China s strategy to become the most FDI attracting country in the world? What lessons India can learn from China and improve its FDI inflow? The study attempts to theorize what lessons emerging markets that are laggards in attracting FDI, such as India, can learn from leader countries in attracting FDI, such as China in the global economy. This study fills the gap in the literature by analyzing the Indian data at the relevant micro state level for the period 1992-2005 and comparing it with the Chinese data for period of 1978-2005 at the economic zone level. Indian FDI attraction model was tested using OLS and autoregressive models and it was found that India has grown due to its human capital, size of the market, rate of growth of the market, and political stability. For China, congenial business climate factors comprising of making structural changes, creating strategic infrastructure at SEZs, and taking strategic policy initiatives of providing economic freedom, opening up its economy, attracting diaspora, and creating flexible labor laws were identified as drivers for attracting FDI and the model using these variables was tested with OLS regression and autoregressive regression analysis and were found significant. This study might help countries such as PIN (Pakistan, Indonesia, and Nigeria) which, will follow the BRIC economies in growth, want to grow, to broaden their understanding and formulate policies to attract FDI. At the enterprise level, it might help TNCs in understanding markets and formulating entry and growth strategies in these markets.

Perkins, Harvard University, US Foreign Direct Investment in China is one of the most comprehensive studies of FDI in China and provides a remarkable background of information on the evolution of China's FDI policies over the last 30 years. Book excerpt: This volume offers an in-depth comparative analysis of FDI policies pursued by India and China since opening up. The nature, type, sources and direction of inflows to both the countries have been analysed exhaustively. It is an incisive and comprehensive work which brings to fore the key differences in their policy framework, approaches and the implementation strategies. The far reaching impact of FDI on trade, transfer of techno-logy and employment generation has been examined critically. It also explores the reasons for skewed regional distribution of FDI in both the countries. The book articulates the role played by pragmatic policy, developed infrastructure and conducive operating environment in driving massive FDI flows into China. The author convincingly advocates reorientation of Indian policies relating to development of infrastructure for export-oriented labour-intensive manufacture, labour laws regime and vesting of authority for investment approval in favour of state governments to accelerate the pace of FDI inflows. The conclusions are based on rich empirical evidence supported by statistical backup. The book contains cogent and compelling arguments and interesting insights. Book Foreign Direct Investment

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment written by Yingqi Wei and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of detailed case studies of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico and Sub-Saharan Africa, providing a critical review of the determinants and impact of FDI on growth and development, employment, technology transfer and trade. The expert contributors examine a range of controversial issues including the contribution of the relatively large volume of FDI in China to its growth, whether India should fully liberalise its FDI regime and the impact of Mexico's membership of NAFTA on the volume of FDI it has attracted. Malaysia's economic policies, which appear to have attracted relatively large volumes of FDI but failed to generate the hoped for transmission of technology and skills are also questioned, along with the role of corruption in limiting the contribution of FDI to achieving social goals in Sub-Saharan Africa. The impressive record of the Irish Republic in attracting and harnessing FDI to development objectives is examined closely and provides a detailed analysis of policies likely to promote efficient utilisation of FDI.

Book Inward Foreign Investments in India and China A Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Inward Foreign Investments in India and China A Comparative Perspective written by and published by KW Publishers Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India and China have been the major recipients of FDI inflows in the last two decades. The level and growth of the flows though have been much higher for China than India. This phenomenon have given rise to a huge literature exploring the reasons for such divergence. Data shows that the matters have compounded after the global financial crisis. During the crisis year the gap was almost eliminated. Interestingly, after the crisis year the flows diverged sharply with increase for China and slow down for India. This was even when China was more affected initially by the crisis than India. The paper thus takes a fresh look at the factors responsible for the divergence in FDI inflows to the two countries especially after the Global Financial Crisis. Simple correlations between probable determinants and FDI flows for both the countries have been used to understand the causes of the divergence and their implications.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in China

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in China written by Ms.Wanda Tseng and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's increasing openness to foreign direct investment (FDI) has contributed importantly to its exceptional growth performance. This paper examines China's experience with FDI and identifies some lessons for other countries. Most of the factors explaining China's success have also been important in attracting FDI to other countries: market size, labor costs, quality of infrastructure, and government policies. FDI has contributed to higher investment and productivity growth, and has created jobs and a dynamic export sector. China's success, however, did not come without some pitfalls: an increasingly complex tax incentive system and growing regional income disparities. Accession to the WTO should broaden China's "opening up" policies and continue FDI's contributions to China's economy in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is the largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) among developing countries. This study compares China's FDI performance with a number of other Asian countries and focuses on the policy and institutional factors that lead to a large demand for FDI in China. The policy and institutional factors include import substitution, excess investment demand and features of China's FDI regulatory system. The study shows that there are costs associated with such a high demand for FDI, including overbidding for FDI and the associated loss of Chinese bargaining power, large import demand, and the structure of the FDI at variance with Chinese official policies. This study also briefly discusses the foreign economic policy implications of China's FDI absorption and suggests some future research possibilities.
