Book Spenser and Biblical Poetics

Download or read book Spenser and Biblical Poetics written by Carol V. Kaske and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carol V. Kaske examines how the form, no less than the theology, of Spenser's writings reveals the influence of the Bible and medieval and Renaissance Biblical hermeneutics. Her approach partakes of both the old historicism and the new. Spenser and Biblical Poetics is the first comprehensive account of the contradictions and inconsistencies in Spenser's imagery—particularly in The Faerie Queene. These and his well-known contradictions in doctrine Kaske accepts and celebrates. She shows that Spenser challenges the reader with problems arising from his endorsement of both Protestant and Catholic traditions. She connects Spenser's contradictory style not only with such religious topics (for example, adiaphorism) but also with secular ones such as colonialism, the conflict between nature and culture, and the policies of the Queen. Spenser and Biblical Poetics makes an indispensable contribution to the history of reading in the Renaissance.

Book Authority and Representation in Early Modern Discourse

Download or read book Authority and Representation in Early Modern Discourse written by Robert Weimann and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking study attempts to view both Reformation discourse and Renaissance fiction (and, by implication, the Elizabethan theater) as constitutive of an early modern paradigm change in the authorization of discourse. The profound crisis in traditional locations of authority, affecting religious, political, and poetic courts of appeal, is traced as interactive with an unprecedented proliferation of both signifying practices and communicative technologies. Representation itself seeks to cope with these changing uses of language and power vis- -vis deep divisions (but also new patterns of socialization) in contemporary culture and society. Authority, now that it is less given before an utterance begins, comes to constitute itself through the competence, cogency, and efficacy of representational practice itself, even as this practice privileges, and draws upon, pictorial form in diverse cultural contexts. This book continues to search for answers to questions of why and under what conditions in the early modern period the representation of authority could increasingly be challenged by the authority of signs. Initially raised in Weimann's Shakespeare und die Macht der Mimesis, these questions are developed towards a theory and history of early modern representation that involves close encounters with a wide variety of texts, from Luther, Henry Tudor, Edward Seymour, Gardiner, and Bancroft to Malory, Erasmus, Rabelais, Sidney, Nashe, and Cervantes. "Robert Weimann is one of the world's most eminent and intellectually formidable scholars of early modern culture -- and he has written a work of the utmost importance to the theory and practice of cultural and literary history, and to the study of sixteenth century English and European culture in particular. The book is an intellectual tour de force, yet one utterly devoid of the flourishes of academic self-display. This work genuinely impresses without ever seeking to impress." -- Louis A. Montrose, University of California, San Diego

Book English Drama Before Shakespeare

Download or read book English Drama Before Shakespeare written by Peter Happe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Drama before Shakespeare surveys the range of dramatic activity in English up to 1590. The book challenges the traditional divisions between Medieval and Renaissance literature by showing that there was much continuity throughout this period, in spite of many innovations. The range of dramatic activity includes well-known features such as mystery cycles and the interludes, as well as comedy and tragedy. Para-dramatic activity such as the liturgical drama, royal entries and localised or parish drama is also covered. Many of the plays considered are anonymous, but a coherent, biographical view can be taken of the work of known dramatists such as John Heywood, John Bale, and Christopher Marlowe. Peter Happé's study is based upon close reading of selected plays, especially from the mystery cycles and such Elizabethan works as Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy. It takes account of contemporary research into dramatic form, performance (including some important recent revivals), dramatic sites and early theatre buildings, and the nature of early dramatic texts. Recent changes in outlook generated by the publication of the written records of early drama form part of the book's focus. There is an extensive bibliography covering social and political background, the lives and works of individual authors, and the development of theatrical ideas through the period. The book is aimed at undergraduates, as well as offering an overview for more advanced students and researchers in drama and in related fields of literature and cultural studies.
