Book The Colours of Our Memories

Download or read book The Colours of Our Memories written by Michel Pastoureau and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What remains of the colours of our childhood? What are our memories of a blue rabbit, a red dress, a yellow bike – and were they really those colours? What colours do we associate with our student years, our first loves, our adult lives? How does colour leave its mark on memory? In an attempt to answer these and other questions, Michel Pastoureau presents us with a journal about colours that covers half a century. Drawing on personal recollections, he retraces the recent history of colours through an exploration of fashion and clothing, everyday objects and practices, emblems and flags, sport, literature, museums and art. This text – playful, poetic, nostalgic – records the life of both the author and his contemporaries. We live in a world increasingly bursting with colour, in which colour remains a focus for memory, a source of delight and, most of all, an invitation to dream.

Book Status of Bad Memories

Download or read book Status of Bad Memories written by Jonathan Butoto and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-03-19 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His book Status of Bad Memories was written just after the tragedy that happened in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1996 until 2004. He was shocked at the way he and other people from his tribe were marginalized and was horrified that they were being killed by other tribes from Congo and Interahamwe extremist groups from the neighboring country of Rwanda. This book delivers a true account of what happened during the civil war in Congo. Many people died, and Gabby survived the tragedy. With this book, he is thanking Americans and all people who contributed to the protection of his life and family from the hands of killers. He says that there is something inside his heart. The tragedy was caused by the war that happened in DRC. During that time, tears were everywhere in the country. People have been hunted as if they were wild animals. He saw this tragedy with his two eyes. He could stand in a hidden place to see what was happening. Women and children were also killed. His brothers and sisters became homeless. They are now wandering everywhere in the world. Killing a person was no longer a sin but a game to some tribes in Congo. This book is a mediator, a bridge to make Congo a holy place to live in and remind new generation that Congo deserves development instead of having killings, quarrels, and instability.

Highly accessible and approachable, this work provides previously unavailable in-roads that create a richer comprehension of the ever-expanding DC Universe.

Book excerpt: In 1960, a young woman discovers a freedom she never knew existed in this exhilarating, funny, and emotional novel by the bestselling author of She’s Up to No Good. When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly. As the summer unfolds, Ada and Marilyn head for the Jersey shore, where Marilyn helps Ada scope out eligible matches—for anyone but Marilyn, that is. Because if there’s one thing Marilyn’s learned from Ada, it’s that she doesn’t have to settle. With the school year quickly approaching and her father threatening to disinherit her, Marilyn must make her choice for her future: return to the comfortable life she knows or embrace a risky, unknown path on her own.

Readers can learn how to see the world more clearly—and learn to make fewer errors—by understanding just a bit of investing past.

Download or read book Memory and the Self written by Mark Rowlands and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that our memories, in some sense, make us who we are, is a common one-and not at all implausible. After all, what could make us who we are if not the things we have experienced, thought, felt and desired on these idiosyncratic pathways through space and time that we call lives? And how can we retain these experiences, thoughts, feelings and desires if not through memory? On the other hand, most of what we have experienced has been forgotten. And there is now a considerable body of evidence that suggests that, even when we think we remember, our memories are likely to be distorted, sometimes beyond recognition. Imagine writing your autobiography, only to find that that most of it has been redacted, and much of the rest substantially rewritten. What would hold this book together? What would make it the unified and coherent account of a life? The answer, Mark Rowlands argues, lies, partially hidden, in a largely unrecognized form of memory-Rilkean memory. A Rilkean memory is produced when the content of a memory is lost but the act of remembering endures, in a new, mutated, form: a mood, a feeling, or a behavioral disposition. Rilkean memories play a significant role in holding the self together in the face of the poverty and inaccuracy of the contents of memory. But Rilkean memories are important not just because of what they are, but also because of what they were before they became such memories. Acts of remembering sculpt the contents of memories out of the slabs of remembered episodes. Our acts of remembering ensure that we are in the content of each of our memories-present in the way a sculptor is present in his creation-even when this content is lamentably sparse and endemically inaccurate.

Book Handbook of Color Psychology

Download or read book Handbook of Color Psychology written by Andrew J. Elliot and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 1737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We perceive color everywhere and on everything that we encounter in daily life. Color science has progressed to the point where a great deal is known about the mechanics, evolution, and development of color vision, but less is known about the relation between color vision and psychology. However, color psychology is now a burgeoning, exciting area and this Handbook provides comprehensive coverage of emerging theory and research. Top scholars in the field provide rigorous overviews of work on color categorization, color symbolism and association, color preference, reciprocal relations between color perception and psychological functioning, and variations and deficiencies in color perception. The Handbook of Color Psychology seeks to facilitate cross-fertilization among researchers, both within and across disciplines and areas of research, and is an essential resource for anyone interested in color psychology in both theoretical and applied areas of study.
