Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Papers on Political, Literary and Moral Subjects These questions are extremely interesting, as they respect every thing which concerns the happiness of men in the great societies of Europe and America government, liberty, arts, science, agriculture, commerce, morality, religion. It would be an evidence of daring presumption to attempt to Open the volume Of divine determinations on these momentous questions. But it is highly proper, at all times, to exercise our reason, in exam ining the connection between causes and their effects; and in predict ing, with modesty, the probable consequences of known events. It is conceived to be the duty of the historian and the statesman, not merely to collect accounts Of battles, the slaughter of the human race, the sacking of cities, the seizure and confiscation of shipping, and other bloody and barbarous deeds, the work of savage man toward his fel low men; but to discover, if possible, the causes of great changes in the affairs of men; the springs of those important movements, which vary the aspect of government, the features of nations, and the very character of man. The present efforts of the French nation, in resisting the forces of the combined powers, astonish even reflecting men. They far exceed\ every thing exhibited during the energetic reigns of Francis I. And Louis XIV. TO ascertain the true principles from which have sprung the union and the vigor which have marked this amazing revolution, is a work of no small labor, and may be of great public utility. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Literary, Moral and Political Some people are subject to a certain delicacy of passion, which makes them extremely sensible to all the accidents of life, and gives them a lively joy upon every prosperous event, as well as a piercing grief, when they meet with misfortunes and adversity. Favours and good offices easily engage their friendship while the smallest injury provokes their resentment. Any honour or mark of distinction elevates them above measure; but they are as sensibly touched with contempt. People of this character have, no doubt, more lively enjoyments, as well as more pungent sorrows, than men of cool and sedate tempers but, I believe, when everything is balanced, there is no one, who would not rather be of the latter character, were he entirely master of his own disposition. Good or ill fortune Is very little at our disposal: and when a pe_r_son. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Political Literary Essays

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Literary Essays: 1908-1913 I have to thank the editors of The Edinburgh and Quarterly Reviews, The Nineteenth Century and After., and The Spectator for allowing the republication of these essays, all of which appeared originally in their respective columns. No important alterations or additions have been made, but I should like to observe, as regards the first essay of the series - on "The Government of Subject Races" - that, although only six years have elapsed since it was written, events in India have moved rapidly during that short period. I adhere to the opinions expressed in that essay so far as they go, but it will be obvious to any one who has paid attention to Indian affairs that, if the subject had to be treated now, many very important issues, to which I have not alluded, would have to be imported into the discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Realities and Ideals: Social, Political, Literary and Artistic This volume is the fourth of a series of Essays published in the present and the preceding year: - The Creed of a Layman, 1907, The Philosophy of Common Sense, 1907, National and Social Problems y 1908, Realities and Ideals, 1908. The collected series treats of Religion, Philosophy, Politics, Economics, Literature, and Art. Diverse as are the subjects, and varied as is the form, of these studies, they are all based on one coherent scheme of thought - the Positivist Synthesis - a reorganisation of life, at once intellectual, moral, and social, by faith in our common Humanity. The forty-four Essays have been composed at various times over more than forty years; yet, I trust, they will be found to be not only consistent but mutually to explain and complete each other. Some appeared in early numbers of English or American Reviews: some were written in the present year: a few were printed privately or were known only to colleagues and friends. The whole are more or less biographic, and are personal reminiscences of men whom I have known, of movements in which I have had a share, or of events which I have witnessed.
