Book A Chronological Revision of the Origins of Christianity

Download or read book A Chronological Revision of the Origins of Christianity written by Frans J. Vermeiren and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 33 CE, the time of Jesus' crucifixion, is one of the most important turning points in Western history. In spite of this, some major problems with the origins of Christianity have persisted throughout the centuries. The best-known of these is the strange relationship between Jesus and his follower Paul who, in his letters to the first Christian communities, remains silent on Jesus' teachings, his spectacular deeds, his relatives or his home base Galilee. It is also remarkable that the Gospel of Mark, which was the first manuscript to tell the story of Jesus' life and execution, was written about 40 years after the events.Independent of traditional biblical scholarship, Vermeiren has studied not only the Bible but also the other relevant written sources on the subject, primarily the Dead Sea Scrolls and the works of the Jewish historian Josephus. Through a combined reading of all available sources Vermeiren takes the reader on a spectacular journey into Roman-occupied first century Palestine, and brings to light an entirely different beginning of Christianity from what the New Testament and the Christian churches would have us believe. He brings forward a revolutionary theory that not only settles the Paul problem and the issues of chronology, but also shows an early Christianity that is the result of purely human purpose and effort. This theory might be a decisive step in demythologizing Christianity. It's an eye opener for the interested layperson, and a serious challenge for the churches, for biblical scholars and for academic historians alike.

Book excerpt: Dealing with a time when "Christians" were moving towards separation from the movement's Jewish origins, this inaugural volume of A People's History of Christianity tells "the people's story" by gathering together evidence from the New Testament texts, archaeology, and other contemporary sources. Of particular interest to the distinguished group of scholar-contributors are the often overlooked aspects of the earliest "Christian" consciousness: How, for example, did they manage to negotiate allegiances to two social groups? How did they deal with crucial issues of wealth and poverty? What about the participation of slaves and women in these communities? How did living in the shadow of the Roman Empire color their religious experience and economic values? With Horsley, contributors include: Jorunn Jacobsen Buckley, Allen Dwight Callahan, Warren Carter, Neil Elliott, Steven J. Friesen, William R. Herzog II, Clarice J. Martin, Carolyn Osiek, Raymond Pickett, Barbara R. Rossing, Antoinette Clark Wire.

Book The Student s Chronological New Testament Text of the American Standard Revision

Download or read book The Student s Chronological New Testament Text of the American Standard Revision written by Archibald T. Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Chronological New Testament (Text of the American Standard Revision): With Introductory Historical Notes and Outlines The exact chronology of all the books is not observed for Obvious rea sons. For instance, the Four Gospels all doubtless belong to a period after the Epistle Of James and some of Paul's Epistles. The Gospels, it should be remembered, are an interpretation Of the facts of Christ's life, in the light of much Of the Apostolic history and with some of the Apostolic literature already produced. A solid historical basis is thus easily reached in studying the foundations of Christianity which rein forces the Gospels. But as the Gospels deal with facts that antedate the Apostolic history, they must in historical study clearly be read before that history. Again, the Acts of the Apostles was undoubtedly written after many of the books Of the New Testament had appeared. And yet, since much of the story Of Acts antedates those books, the Acts must appear before the Apostolic Epistles. Where it is possible in con nection With the Epistles, mention will be made Of the part of Acts with which it corresponds. The effort has been not to follow a blind rule, but to arrange the books in such a way as to allow them to throw light on each other and in accordance with the known or probable historical facts, so that one can read in the Scripture text the story of the origin of Christianity and its actual development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Book In Search of Christian Origins

Download or read book In Search of Christian Origins written by J Steven Paul and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating history that reveals Christianity's roots, its often-unknown and surprising traditions, and its influence on the world today. There is the accepted, often-repeated version of Christian history-and then there's the real story. In this gripping volume, author J. Steven Paul uncovers the little-known details of the world's largest religion. How did Christianity originate? Who created its earliest writings? Who decided which books would be in the Bible? Where did the ideas of heaven and hell originate, and when did people begin taking the Bible literally? How did Christianity evolve and fracture into the many forms it takes today? From fascinating background on its central tenets to curious details that have been largely swept under the rug, this comprehensive overview traces Christianity from ancient practices through its centuries-long rise in popularity, power, influence, and dominance. Paul's detailed account sheds light on doctrine, dogma, and traditions, observing Christianity's interaction with related faiths, including Judaism, Islam, "heretical" Christian sects, and atheism. Paul outlines how this once-tiny religious cult has shaped centuries of Western civilization and inspired great acts of compassion and kindness. But, in the process, it also viciously attacked its enemies, legitimized the practice of slavery, and collaborated in colonialism and imperialism while shaping the way communities continue to view social and scientific issues. To understand Christian history is to unearth the roots of our current divisive American culture-and hopefully find the tools to fix it in order to grow into a more cooperative society.

Book Finding the Roots of Christianity

Download or read book Finding the Roots of Christianity written by Luke Painter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding the Roots of Christianity is for people who are curious about the historical Jesus, his followers, and the movement they began. Who were they, and how was their message understood by those who heard them? Where did the New Testament of the Bible come from? In a personal, thoughtful style, Luke Painter brings into focus the life and times of the Jewish prophet Jesus of Nazareth, bridging the gap between personal study of the Bible and academic scholarship. Sources outside the Bible, including the ancient historian Josephus and recently discovered "lost scriptures" such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, reveal the diversity of early Christian beliefs. Roman religious beliefs influenced how the Christian message was understood during the transition from Jewish sects to the official religion of the Roman Empire. Clear and concise, and based on careful historical research, this book guides the reader through what is known about the earliest origins of Christianity as well as recent discoveries and debates. The author's personal journey of faith and passionate interest in the people behind the New Testament enliven the facts of history, illuminating their meaning for their own time as well as today.

Book The Mythological and Political Origins of Christianity

Download or read book The Mythological and Political Origins of Christianity written by David J.P Haasbroek and published by Erica de Kok. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research about Jesus was confined to Israel only. Researchers did so because they took it for granted that Christianity had begun on Jewish soil only. Therefore the lacking information of the gospels forced researchers to conclude that Jesus was mythical, and not historical. This conclusion was due to the many Old Testament quotations that attribute to Jesus in the New Testament. The Old Testament deals with Jewish history and the myths of the ancient world with whom the Jews have come into contact. On that basis, any nation can write an overview of its history and then use the myths of the ancient world to explain the intervention of gods in its history. Likewise, evangelists, several centuries later, have also been able to associate Jesus, an orthodox Jewish king, with the myths and politics of their times.
