Book Twisted Head

Download or read book Twisted Head written by Carl Capotorto and published by Crown. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's in a name? For Carl Capotorto, everything is in a name. The literal translation from Italian to English of Capotorto is "twisted head." This is no accident. Carl grew up in the Bronx in the 1960s and ’70s with the Mangialardis ("eat fat") and Mrs. Sabella ("so beautiful"), incessant fryers and a dolled-up glamour queen. Carl's father, Philip Vito Capotorto, was the obsessive, tyrannical head of the family--"I'm not your friend, I'm the father" was a common refrain in their household. The father ran Cappi's Pizza and Sangwheech Shoppe, whose motto was "We Don't Spel Good, Just Cook Nice." It was a time of great upheaval in the Bronx, and Carl's father was right in the middle of it, if not the cause of it, much to the chagrin of his long-suffering mother. Twisted Head is the comedic story of a hardscrabble, working-class family's life that represents the real legacy of Italian-Americans--labor, not crime. It is also the poignant memoir of the author's struggle to become himself in a world that demanded he act like someone else. Tragic and funny in equal measure, Carl's story is propelled by a cast of only-in-New-York characters: customers at the family pizza shop, public school teachers, nuns and priests at church, shop owners and merchants--all wildly entertaining and sometimes frightening. Somewhere in all the rage and madness that surrounded Carl in his youth, he found the bottom line: he loved his family, but he had to let them go. Twisted Head is an exorcism of sorts. With plenty of laughs.

Book A Halloween Scarol

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book A Halloween Scarol written by Marc Costanzo and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Goresco hates Halloween. The owner of a boutique Christmas shop aptly called "Christmas Evie's," she loathes every aspect of Halloween: the gawdy decorations, the haunted houses, the debauched celebrations. She would cancel the entire accursed month of October if she could, just so she could skip right to Christmas, a holiday that celebrates the best in people. Evie has no patience for the supernatural, so she's doubly angry when her deceased friend and business partner, Marley, shows up at her shop on the morning of October 31. Marley, Evie's best friend since the two were children, explains that Evelyn will be visited by three Halloween spirits, setting Evie on a journey to her own tragic past, her depressing present and an unimaginable future only she has the power to prevent. More than just a modern spin on the Dickens classic, A Halloween Scarol is the story of a friendship that spans decades of joy and heartache, examining the devastating effects of grief and how it's easier to blame your problems on a holiday than to make peace with yourself.

Download or read book An Actor s Carol written by Charles Evered and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The triumph of Charles Evered's AN ACTOR'S CAROl is that it takes an old story and makes it seem new...his modernized take on Dickens ubiquitous holiday parable takes the Ebenezer Scrooge story out of Pre-Industrial Revolution London and plops it in a squalid playhouse where season after season of no-budget theater has been subsidized by the holiday cash cow that A Christmas Carol has become. It works, because Evered's even handed, light hearted reinvention of the source material not only delivers Dickens' original story of human redemption, but also adds some very relevant ideas about tolerance, inclusion and the theater." Michael C Moore, Kitsap Sun "If A Christmas Carol restores our love of Christmas, AN ACTOR'S CAROL restores our love of Christmas AND theatre!" Hal Linden, Tony award winning actor "Shines a 21st Century light on an age old tale with cleverness, wit and charm!" V J Hume, C V Independent "A charming and hilarious modernization of A Christmas Carol." Catherine Randazzo, Associate Artist, Florida Studio Theatre

Download or read book Rumanian Folk Music written by Bela Bartok and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n the first volume of Rumanian Folk Music (Instrumental Melodies) I portions of Bela Bart6k's subsequently-discarded preface, concern ing the fate of his folklore publications, are presented in explanation of the editorial processes necessary for achieving the publication. 1 By way of introduction to this revised edition of a previous, although in complete, published version of the Rumanian Carols and Christmas Songs (Colinde), we refer again to the author's suppressed lines which pertain to this volume: The second publication by the same publisher was to include my collection of Rumanian Colindas (Winter-solstice songs). Their extremely interesting texts were supposed to appear in original as well as in English. After several years of delay, the translation to English prose was completed, one part in adequate archaic English, the rest (by someone else) in most unsuitable Kitchen-English. The publisher did not wish to change this, though. Result: I published the book at my own expense; however, only the musical part, because of lack of sufficient funds. The texts are still in manuscript, even today. 2 Our primary aim, therefore, has been to unite the Rumanian poetic texts and translations with the musical part, in one volume, as was the desire of the author.
