Book Unprepared for Growth

Download or read book Unprepared for Growth written by Charles D. Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is the evaluation of the Prince George's County Public School system. The research examines the issue of overcrowding within the County's school system and recommendations to address it. The research not only looks at Prince George's County, it also explores the issue of overcrowded schools in other school districts throughout the country. This research focuses on the conditions of the existing facilities, the need for renovations to the existing facilities, the need for new schools, and the need for an increase in the capital budget used to fund new facilities. This thesis will be supported by numerous governmental documents, professional literature review, personal observations and a preliminary case study. The anticipated result of this report is to expose the real issue facing Prince George's County as it relates to the existing school system infrastructure. This is an important planning issue, as it requires planning activities and techniques to respond to the ever-changing conditions in the Prince George's County school aged population and its public school system. -- Abstract.

Book New Perspectives on the History of the Twentieth Century American High School

Download or read book New Perspectives on the History of the Twentieth Century American High School written by Kyle P. Steele and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-07 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of the American high school that occurred in the twentieth century is among the most remarkable educational, social, and cultural phenomena of the twentieth century. The history of education, however, has often reduced the institution to its educational function alone, thus missing its significantly broader importance. As a corrective, this collection of essays serves four ends: as an introduction to the history of the high school; as a reevaluation of the power of narratives that privilege the perspective of school leaders and the curriculum; as a glimpse into the worlds created by students and their communities; and, most critically, as a means of sparking conversations about where we might look next for stories worth telling.

Download or read book The Black Metropolis in the Twenty first Century written by Robert Doyle Bullard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written mostly by African-American scholars, the chapters in this book describe the challenges facing cities, suburbs, and metropolitan regions as they seek to address continuing and emerging patterns of racial polarization in the twenty-first century. The book clearly shows that the United States entered the new millennium as one of the wealthiest and most powerful nations on Earth. Yet amid this prosperity, our nation is faced with some of the same challenges that confronted it at the beginning of the twentieth century, including rising inequality in income, wealth, and opportunity; economic restructuring; immigration pressures and ethnic tension; and a widening gap between "haves" and "have nots.""--BOOK JACKET.

Book New Schools for a New Century

Download or read book New Schools for a New Century written by Tewel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-02-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining both the theory as well as the practice of the education reform process, this unique breakthrough volume focuses on every aspect of the change process in high school education today. Short- and long-term strategies for each phase of the process-provoking, creating, managing, supporting, and sustaining reform-are covered. Based on the real-life experiences of the author and others, this book recognizes that most high school reform is short-lived. It stresses the ways to create and maintain positive change, making the process a long-lasting, worthwhile mission for the school's leadership and ultimately the students. Short, useful summaries of high school reform provide true-life pictures of what really happens in the midst of changing the way educational institutions operate. These stories cover school-based management, collaborative or shared leadership, school-within-a-school groupings, interdisciplinary instruction, school-based budgeting, new models for professional development, and others. Through these examples, readers can understand how reform strategies work and how to apply and adapt them to their own situations. As an added feature, this book provides the names and locations of schools attempting each reform as well as the names and addresses of school reform networks that readers can contact in their own efforts.

Book The New Black Middle Class in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book The New Black Middle Class in the Twenty First Century written by Bart Landry and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although past research on the African American community has focused primarily on issues of discrimination, segregation, and other forms of deprivation, there has always been some recognition of class diversity within the black population. The New Black Middle Class in the Twenty-First Century is a significant contribution to the continuing study of black middle class life. Sociologist Bart Landry examines the changes that have occurred since the publication of his now-classic The New Black Middle Class in the late 1980s, and conducts a comprehensive examination of black middle class American life in the early decades of the twenty-first century. Landry investigates the educational and occupational attainment, income and wealth, methods of child-rearing, community-building priorities, and residential settlement patterns of this growing yet still-understudied segment of the U.S. population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current economic difficulties and the challenge of competing in the world market have necessitated a rethinking of American approaches to the utilization of people in organizations. Management now recognizes a need to have workers take on more responsibility at the points of production, of sale, and of service rendered if the United States is to compete in rapidly changing world markets. This development means that much more is expected of even entry-level members of the American workforce. Thus, even more is expected of our high schools and colleges to provide this type of workforce. The need of American management for workers with greater skills and who can take on greater responsibility has spawned many commissions, task forces, and studies. All of them have contributed to the vast evidence documenting the need for a more highly skilled workforce. These studies are summarized and synthesized in this book. However, what remains largely undone is the development of methods to assess the necessary skills that have been identified. A major portion of this book deals with assessment issues. Workforce Readiness: Competencies and Assessment explores the state-of-the-art in the specification of competencies (skills) and their assessment for students entering the world of work from both high school and college. Both individual and team competencies are examined via data that has been reported and collected in various settings--schools, laboratories, and industrial facilities.
