Millions of them are missing their childhood, medicines, education, information and a host of other essentials due to the disease. Yet they are often overlooked in AIDS programmes, policies and budgets. The Unite for Children. Unite against AIDS Campaign, a global effort by UNICEF, UNAIDS and a multiplicity of other partners, aims to accelerate action to help those at risk of HIV infection, and those already infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Through four focus areas - prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, providing paediatric treatment, preventing infection among adolescents and young people, and protecting and supporting children affected by AIDS, the Campaign aims to ensure that this is the last generation of children that bears the burden of AIDS.

Book Monitoring Child Well being

Download or read book Monitoring Child Well being written by Andrew Dawes and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a rights-based approach, this comprehensive study develops a conceptual framework and a definitive set of holistic indicators for monitoring the well-being of children in South Africa. Taking cues from the child-rights focus of the South African constitution, it is made clear that it is not just the state of the children that is important to measure, but also the contexts within which the children grow and develop. Providing practical tools for policy makers to assess the effectiveness of child-based policies and interventions, this practical work addresses a wide range of domains--child poverty, HIV and AIDS, education, mental health and disability, abuse and neglect, the justice system, and children affected by the worst forms of labor.

Download or read book Reducing the Odds written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of HIV-positive women give birth every year. Further, because many pregnant women are not tested for HIV and therefore do not receive treatment, the number of children born with HIV is still unacceptably high. What can we do to eliminate this tragic and costly inheritance? In response to a congressional request, this book evaluates the extent to which state efforts have been effective in reducing the perinatal transmission of HIV. The committee recommends that testing HIV be a routine part of prenatal care, and that health care providers notify women that HIV testing is part of the usual array of prenatal tests and that they have an opportunity to refuse the HIV test. This approach could help both reduce the number of pediatric AIDS cases and improve treatment for mothers with AIDS. Reducing the Odds will be of special interest to federal, state, and local health policymakers, prenatal care providers, maternal and child health specialists, public health practitioners, and advocates for HIV/AIDS patients. Book Rapid Assessment

Download or read book Rapid Assessment written by Lizette Berry and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is aimed at providing an overview of the situation of children in South Africa, with a focus on the non-fulfilment and violation of children's rights as formulated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The assessment utilises evidence drawn from available literature and interviews with key actors in the South African child rights arena. Based on the opinion of these key respondents, the report provides an overview of the key role players in the field, followed by suggestions for possible areas for intervention by international aid agencies. The assessment is limited by a number of elements, such as an extremely short time frame, the shortage of relevant information in certain areas, and the description of role players in the child rights arena is not comprehensive.

Book Rethinking Children s Rights

Download or read book Rethinking Children s Rights written by Phil Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Children's Rights explores attitudes towards and experiences of children's rights. Phil Jones and Sue Welch draw on a wide range of thought, research and practice from different fields and countries to debate, challenge and re-appraise long held beliefs, attitudes and ways of working and living with children. This second edition contains updated references to legislation and research underpinning children's rights, reflecting on recent scholarship and on the current world context. New research and examples are discussed around: - online protection and privacy - evaluating UK progress and the children's rights review by the United Nations - recent insights on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) - new debates about the construction and development of children's rights - new debates about the relationships between social exclusion and children's rights Recent developments in the definition of rights are considered from a variety of perspectives and in relation to different arenas of children's lives. This second edition brings an increased focus on exploring the notion of disjunction between the rhetoric of policy and legislation and the enacted and perceived experiences of children's rights. Themes discussed include power relations between adults and children, the child's voice, intercultural perspectives, social justice, gender and disability. Examples of research, activities, interviews with researchers and guidance on further reading make this an essential text for those studying childhood.
