Book A Brief Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by John W. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Physical Geography The authors hope that this book will be welcomed in those schools in which the time is lacking to master the bulky books on Physical Geography, while yet the desire exists to devote to the subject some what more of endeavor than is required by the few pages on this subject found in the average school-geography. Geography is considered to-day as a description of the earth only in so far as that will account for the earth as the home of man and his occupations. It seems as if we can no longer justify a purely physi cal geography; now we want to know how man lives and Why he lives in this or that way. The most important fact about the earth is that' it is a human planet: men not only live upon it but also make a liv ing out of it. Man changes the earth, and the earth changes man. It is a far cry from the nebulous mass that was thrown off from the sun ages ago, to a contemplated aeroplane flight across the Atlantic or the completion of the Panama canal; but these are the limits of geographical study, and we have to bear in mind always that man is himself a part of nature. In the usual division of the study into physical, commercial, and political branches, the relation Of the human species to its natural environment, which is the keystone of all geographical science, is generally lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Geography Physical geography is the history of the Earth, its past and present, interpreted by the light of Astronomy, Geology, and Biology. It is not a mere description of the features of sea and land, for these, as we now see them, are only one phase in a series Of events Of which we do not know the beginning, nor can we foretell the end. The enumeration, however accurate and exhaustive, of the movements of Ocean and Atmosphere is comparatively useless, unless we can arrive at some general principle to which these are subordinated. Nor is it enough to know the plants and animals which occupy the various regions of land and water we must seek for the explanation of their diversity, and ascertain if the distribution of organised beings in the past throws any light on their relations in the present. It is the science which determines the chronological succession of the great forma tions of the earth's crust, and investigates the causes of its present surface features; it further treats of the materials composing the earth's substance, and of the development of life upon our globe as recorded in its rocky framework. Download or read book New Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Ralph S. Tarr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Physical Geography The following pages have been prepared with the view of supplying the want of a treatise on Physical Geography, adapted to the use of Schools and Academies. It is rather a remarkable fact, that among the multitude and variety of school-books prepared for the schools in the United States, there is not one devoted exclusively to this science. The consequence is. That Physical Geography, as a separate study, is very rarely taught in our schools, and that all, or most of the knowledge acquired respecting it, is what is incidently obtained in pursuing other kindred studies. Book A Class Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Class Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by A. T. Simmons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book of Physical Geography Physical Geography as a school subject is concerned properly with those aspects of the Earth which determine or influence the life of man. It necessarily touches other departments of natural knowledge at many points, but in the following lessons the contributory sciences of astronomy, geology, meteorology, and physics are introduced only to the extent necessary to make clear some of the more obvious ways in which human life is affected by natural phenomena. Educationally regarded, Geography is a practical science practical, since it cannot be studied satisfactorily without the personal performance of observational and experimental exercises designed to lead the student to discover for himself fundamental facts and principles a science, in that the data with which it deals can be applied convincingly to man's needs only when their place in an orderly sequence of cause and effect is duly appreciated. The practical exercises set out at the beginning of the various sections of the book have been framed to lead each student to become - within the limits of the course of study - an independent observer able to reason intelligently on the facts he encounters. The descriptive text which follows each set of exercises provides a means of checking the results obtained and the conclusions arrived at by the student. It is urged that, although the descriptive portions of the volume will be found complete as a text-book, much of the educational value of their study will be lost by students who neglect the practical work. Download or read book Recreations in Physical Geography written by Rosina M. Zornlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreations in Physical Geography: Or the Earth as It Is ON a former occasion, we laid before our readers a concise view of Geology, or the Earth in its former condition; the object of the present volume is to offer a general outline of the earth AS IT is. Geology may be compared to Ancient History, around which distance of time and partial obscurity throw the halo of classical interest. Physical geography, on the other hand, resembles Modern History, or rather, perhaps, records of daily recurring events - events in which our own personal interests are concerned. And should it be thought that our present subject does not possess the peculiar charm with which antiquity invests the science of Geo logy, it will be found, that it does not yield to that, or to any other, in importance, or in the interesting views it unfolds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Complete Geography We have decided to teach these features objectively on a plan that has been highly commended. For instance. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Download or read book Elements of Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Thomas Cramer Hopkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physical Geography There are good textbooks on physical geography, but there are many teachers and school departments not satisfied with any of them. The author has endeavored to meet the require ments of these teachers as far as such needs could be ascertained. With a subject as broad as physical geography there will al ways be lack of uniformity in the manner of presentation, as well (as in the subject matter. The subject is one which is undergoing many changes, and it is possible that both the teachers and the subject may be ahead of present textbooks in many particulars. Every class in physical geography should have more or less laboratory and field work associated with the textbook. One of the functions of the textbook not the only one, by any means is to serve as a handbook, which the pupil studies as an aid in the interpretation of what he sees in the labora tory. Book High School Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book High School Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Grove Karl Gilbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Physical Geography IN order to fit this work for use in Canadian schools, some changes have been made in the order of topics and in the subject-matter. For this revision the authors are largely indebted to Professor A. P. Cole man of the University of Toronto, who has given the volume the benefit of his intimate knowledge of the geography and geology of the Dominion, substituting in every chapter pertinent examples and discussions in place of material which would have special value only in the United States. New chapters have been added, dealing with rocks, with the physical history of Canada, and with matters of elementary astronomy. For the chapters dealing with astronomy Professor C. A. Chant of the University of Toronto is responsible. The study of rocks is introduced before the processes are taken up in detail, and the account of the earth's relations to the sun is transferred to a point near the end of the book. Suitable substitutions have been made in the maps and half-tone illustrations. Not withstanding, these changes, the volume distinctly keeps its identity, and is issued in its new dress in the hope that it may be useful in geographic instruc tion in the High' Schools, Collegiate Institutes and Academies of Canada. The authors are specially indebted to Professors Cole man and Chant, and to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company for many of the illustrations used in this edition. Book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Ralph S. Tarr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear.
