Book The Routledge Handbook of Infrastructure Design

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Infrastructure Design written by Joseph Heathcott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Infrastructure Design explores the multifaceted nature of infrastructure through the global lens of architectural history. Infrastructure holds the world together. Yet even as it connects some people, it divides others, sorting access and connectivity through varied social categories such as class, race, gender, and citizenship. This collection examines themes across broad spans of time, raises questions of linkage and scale, investigates infrastructure as phenomenon and affect, and traces the interrelation of aesthetics, technology, and power. With a diverse range of contributions from 33 scholars, this volume presents new research from regions including South and East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, South America, North America, Western Europe, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. This extraordinary group of authors bring close attention to the materials, functions, and aesthetics of infrastructure systems as these unfold within their cultural and political contexts. They provide not only new knowledge of specific artifacts, such as the Valens Aqueduct, the Hong Kong waterfront, and the Pan-American Highway, but also new ways of conceptualizing, studying, and understanding infrastructure as a worlding process. The Routledge Handbook of Infrastructure Design provides richly textured, thoroughly evidenced, and imaginatively drawn arguments that deepen our understanding of the role of infrastructure in creating the world in which we live. It is a must-read for academics and students.

Book Bridge across the Bosporus

Download or read book Bridge across the Bosporus written by Ferenc A. Váli and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1971. With Atatürk's guiding reforms, Turkey underwent a sweeping modernization of the country's administration. More specifically, by adopting the Latin alphabet, secularizing the country's governance, and importing European laws and jurisprudence, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk effectively reformed the Republic of Turkey into a secular, modern nation-state. In doing so, he introduced a number of foreign policy commitments. Ferenc A. Váli examines the flexibility of Turkey's foreign commitments in light of the country's modernization; depending on the circumstance, Turkey's foreign policy has wavered between Western alliance and neutrality. Examining Turkey's foreign policy in the twentieth century, Váli provides historical background for Turkey's transition form an empire to a nation-state. Váli also assesses Turkey's relations with NATO, Western allies, Russia, the Baltic States, and the Middle East. For his research, Váli conducted interviews with officials of the Turkish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, political party leaders, academics, journalists, and members of diplomatic missions.

Book The Regulation of Turkish Network Industries

Download or read book The Regulation of Turkish Network Industries written by Muzaffer Eroğlu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together academics and experts on Turkish network industries. It provides fundamental information on the current developments regarding regulation of the different network industries in Turkey. Turkey has gone through a liberalization process in most of the network industries during the past 20 years. In most of them, independent regulatory authorities have been established, but some network industries are still remaining under the central or local government regulatory regime. As a result, there is now a very complicated regulatory regime in place which makes Turkey’s regulatory system difficult to understand for practitioners, academics, lawyers, researchers and investors. This book offers unique insight into Turkey’s regulatory regime in various network industries. It also offers a historical background to regulation, a description of the current regulatory regimes, as well as an analysis of the foreseeable evolutions. The book covers all the important network industries in Turkey. No similar book is available on the market to date. Moreover, the book provides an extensive analysis of the current regulatory regimes in the energy, the transport, and the telecommunications industries. This book should be of interest to anyone wishing to understand Turkish regulation and will be very helpful handbook to researchers who are interested in regulation of network industries not only in Turkey but also in other developing countries, as Turkey is quite representative of other emerging countries. Readers will acquire a thorough understanding of the state of play of the Turkish network industries and their regulation.

Book Risk Based Bridge Engineering

Download or read book Risk Based Bridge Engineering written by Khaled Mahmoud and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk-based engineering is essential for the efficient asset management and safe operation of bridges. A risk-based asset management strategy couples risk management, standard work, reliability-based inspection and structural analysis, and condition-based maintenance to properly apply resources based on process criticality. This ensures that proper controls are put in place and reliability analysis is used to ensure continuous improvement. An effective risk-based management system includes an enterprise asset management or resource solution that properly catalogues asset attribute data, a functional hierarchy, criticality analysis, risk and failure analysis, control plans, reliability analysis and continuous improvement. Such efforts include periodic inspections, condition evaluations and prioritizing repairs accordingly. This book contains select papers that were presented at the 10th New York City Bridge Conference, held on August 26-27, 2019. The volume is a valuable contribution to the state-of-the-art in bridge engineering.
