Book A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by J. C. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls, Vol. 1 With children who have learned to read the pleasure of poetry is not all sensuous: the emotions, too, begin to be stirred. Now we cannot make children feel poetry unless we feel it ourselves and show that we do so by our manner of reading or repeating it. Some explanation will be needed here and there to make the ideas clear enough to be felt: more than this runs the risk of explaining the charm away. If a poem is to delight the mind as well as the ear, it should first be read or said as a whole; for it is only the whole that properly has meaning. Most short poems that are worth knowing are worth knowing by heart. But if these poems be studied and enjoyed as I have said, it matters little how many verses are deliberately learned by heart. Verses that are used to train the voice should no doubt be learned as a set task. But beyond this there is little need to mak a task of an exercise whose true end is to lay up permanent possibilities of delight. That end will be best attained if, after the poems have been studied and enjoyed, the children are left to choose for themselves what pieces they will learn by heart. If the book is in their hands for a year or two, those who have a gift for verse will be found to have learned most of it; the others might try at least to learn one poem from each section. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls, Vol. 2 The first part of this book is meant for children who have just learned to read. It should last them for a year or two. They can then take up this second part, which will carry them on for some three years more. It should be used in the same way as Part I, with such modifications only as follow from the greater age of the children. Each poem, that is, should be read, in the first place, as a whole It should be read aloud, musically and feelingly; with illustration enough to make each image felt, and explanation enough to make the whole intelligible - 30 far, I mean, as children can feel and understand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book for Boys and Girls, or Country Rhymes for Children Two emblems had in some instances been run together into one. For example, the first emblem in the later edition contains meditations on two things - the Barren Fig-tree and God's Vineyard; and the second has a meditation on the Lark and the Fowler, and also a comparison between the Fowler and Satan. It maybe, Mr. Od'or suggested, that these two emblems were in this way originally four, and so with others; and upon this plan the volume contained exactly seventy four meditations. Book Poems for Children Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poems for Children Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Christina Georgina Rossetti and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems for Children, Vol. 1 The greatest task which confronts the little child is the mastering of the mother tongue in its three phases speech, reading, and writing. In the accomplishment of this task, nothing is so helpful as the hearing and reading of large quan tities of suitable poetry. This fact was well known to the people of antiquity. Before the age of writing, the laws and traditions of each tribe were handed down through the medium of verse. Verse was chosen rather than prose, because its form facilitated memorizing and furnished a guarantee of accuracy. When the law or tradition had been once' thrown into the poetic form it was difficult to change its meaning without destroying its form and this would at once furnish a test of correctness. It was in this manner that all the nations of antiquity trained the minds of their young and transmitted to posterity the memory of the deeds done by their heroes, and those laws and rules of conduct which experience had found it necessary to impart to the youthful members of the community. Thus it was that the Greeks preserved to posterity the poems of Homer and the laws of their legislators. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At the same time he said in the preface that a mystery hung over this little work which many years' diligent research had not enabled him to solve. For in the two lists of Bunyan's Works made by Charles Doe in 1692 and 1698, there is no mention made of any book bearing the title referred to, nor is there any such title to be found in the many advertisements of his works issued by Bunyan's own publishers. Some clue to the mystery seemed to be offered in the fact that a work with a different title, but. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Children s First Book of Poetry Classic Reprint written by Emilie Kip Baker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's First Book of Poetry We hear much nowadays about the decline of poetry. No one reads poetry any more. Poets cannot make a living. The world has ceased to express its ideals in verse. The novel and the short story, rather than the epic or the lyric, furnish our instruction and our inspiration. The magazine and the newspaper are our substitute for a library; and these print verses only to fill out a column or a page. In short, we are living in a reflective, a scientific, a prose age. So we are told. Like most generalizations about the complex phenomena of modern life, this is only partially true. Every year brings new volumes of dramatic, narrative, and lyric poetry of high merit. Yeats, Synge, and Phillips; Noyes, Masefield, and Gibson; - these and scores of other names come to mind to prove that the gift of song has not fled the earth. Nor are the old poets forgotten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Number One Joy Street: A Medley of Prose and Verse for Boys and Girls Tom said, I seed a little rabbit with horns on its head I did, and I runned to catch it by its little tail, but the tail corned Off in my hand, and the Duke comed by with gold boots on and said if I would plant the little tail in the beech-mast another little rabbit would grow on it come Michaelmas, and so I did, Grandad, you come and see. But his Grandad didn't come and see; he went instead to the chimney-place where his carpet slippers were warming, and he laid his grandson across his knee, and the slipper said Slap slap I This also offended Tom Cobble. For Tom Cobble saw the world in his own way, and if other people saw it different, he couldn't help that. It was these things which made him get himself stolen by the fairies. He knew how, quite well. He went one evening to the mushroom field before the moon was up, and lay down in the middle of the biggest green ring there without saying his prayers. When the moon came up, the fairies came out and got him. It's no manner of use, Tom Cobble, they said, when he woke up under the Hill. We've got you fast for seven years, and it's no manner of use to cry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyra Heroica: A Book of Verse for Boys This book of verse for boys is, I believe, the first of its kind in English. Plainly it were labour lost to go gleaning where so many experts have gone harvesting; and for what is rarest and best in English Poetry the world must turn, as heretofore, to the several 'Golden Treasuries' of Professor Palgrave and Mr. Coventry Patmore, and to the excellent 'Poets' Walk' of Mr. Mowbray Morris. My purpose has been to choose and sheave a certain number of those achievements in verse which, as expressing the simpler sentiments and the more elemental emotions, might fitly be addressed to such boys - and men, for that matter - as are privileged to use our noble English tongue. To set forth, as only art can, the beauty and the joy of living, the beauty and the blessedness of death, the glory of battle and adventure, the nobility of devotion - to a cause, an ideal, a passion even - the dignity of resistance, the sacred quality of patriotism, that is my ambition here Now, to read poetry at all is to have an ideal anthology of ones own, and in that possession to be incapable of content with the anthologies of all the world besides. That is, the personal equation is ever to be reckoned withal, and I have had my preferences, as those that went before me had theirs.
