Book You Never Forget Your First

Download or read book You Never Forget Your First written by Alexis Coe and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AN NPR CONCIERGE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR “In her form-shattering and myth-crushing book….Coe examines myths with mirth, and writes history with humor… [You Never Forget Your First] is an accessible look at a president who always finishes in the first ranks of our leaders.” —Boston Globe Alexis Coe takes a closer look at our first--and finds he is not quite the man we remember Young George Washington was raised by a struggling single mother, demanded military promotions, caused an international incident, and never backed down--even when his dysentery got so bad he had to ride with a cushion on his saddle. But after he married Martha, everything changed. Washington became the kind of man who named his dog Sweetlips and hated to leave home. He took up arms against the British only when there was no other way, though he lost more battles than he won. After an unlikely victory in the Revolutionary War cast him as the nation's hero, he was desperate to retire, but the founders pressured him into the presidency--twice. When he retired years later, no one talked him out of it. He left the highest office heartbroken over the partisan nightmare his backstabbing cabinet had created. Back on his plantation, the man who fought for liberty must confront his greatest hypocrisy--what to do with the men, women, and children he owns--before he succumbs to death. With irresistible style and warm humor, You Never Forget Your First combines rigorous research and lively storytelling that will have readers--including those who thought presidential biographies were just for dads--inhaling every page.

Book An Autobiography of George Washington

Download or read book An Autobiography of George Washington written by Edith Ellis and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "George Washington’s Autobiography is a fascinating example of channeled literature, adding a very human personality to the stiff figure of the portraits. Here we encounter a three-dimensional Washington with his loves, fears, philosophy, and repeated encounters with the spirit world. This is an unforgettable, intimate view of the Father of our Country."— Steven Fanning, Ph.D., the author of Mystics of the Christian Tradition Scribe Edith Ellis met the spirit of George Washington one evening in 1955. He contacted her from the Other Side to ask if she would serve as a channel so that he could dictate his autobiography for his "fellow American Patriots," believing that he had kept his personal feelings about his life far too private. Edith agreed, although she was nearly blind and in her mid-70s. So began a most extraordinary partnership between Edith Ellis and the "Founding Father of America." The result is this remarkable book that has taken more than 60 years to reach the public. This book is a must-read for everyone who feels the spirit of the Founding Fathers surrounding us again.

Book A Biographical Sketch of George Washington Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Biographical Sketch of George Washington Classic Reprint written by George H. Woodruff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biographical Sketch of George Washington This trust of danger and fatigue he executed with great ability. He left Williamsburg, October 31, 17 53, the very day on which he received his commission, and at the frontier settlement of the Eng lish engaged guides to conduct him over the Allegheny mountains. After passing them he pursued his route to the Monongahela examining the country with a military eye, and taking the most judicious means for securing the friendship of the Indians. He selected the forks of the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers as a position which ought to be immediately possessed and fortified. At this place the French very soon erected Fort duquesne, which fell into the hands of the English in 17 58, and was called by them Fort Pitt? Pursuing his way up the Allegheny to French Creek, he found at the fort upon this stream the commanding officer, to whom he delivered the letter from Mr. Dinwiddie. On his return he encountered great difficulties and dangers. As the snow was deep and the horses weak from fatigue, he left his attendants at the mouth of French Creek, and set out on foot, with his papers and provisions in his pack, accompanied only by a pilot by the name of Gist. At a place upon the Allegheny, called Murdering Town, they fell in with a hostile Indian who was one of a party then lying in wait, and who fired upon them not ten steps distant. Book George Washington A Life in Books

Download or read book George Washington A Life in Books written by Kevin J. Hayes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Alexander Hamilton are generally considered the great minds of early America. George Washington, instead, is toasted with accolades regarding his solid common sense and strength in battle. Indeed, John Adams once snobbishly dismissed him as "too illiterate, unlearned, unread for his station and reputation." Yet Adams, as well as the majority of the men who knew Washington in his life, were unaware of his singular devotion to self-improvement. Based on a comprehensive amount of research at the Library of Congress, the collections at Mount Vernon, and rare book archives scattered across the country, Kevin J. Hayes corrects this misconception and reconstructs in vivid detail the active intellectual life that has gone largely unnoticed in conventional narratives of Washington. Despite being a lifelong reader, Washington felt an acute sense of embarrassment about his relative lack of formal education and cultural sophistication, and in this sparkling literary biography, Hayes illustrates just how tirelessly Washington worked to improve. Beginning with the primers, forgotten periodicals, conduct books, and classic eighteenth-century novels such as Tom Jones that shaped Washington's early life, Hayes studies Washington's letters and journals, charting the many ways the books of his upbringing affected decisions before and during the Revolutionary War. The final section of the book covers the voluminous reading that occurred during Washington's presidency and his retirement at Mount Vernon. Throughout, Hayes examines Washington's writing as well as his reading, from The Journal of Major George Washington through his Farewell Address. The sheer breadth of titles under review here allow readers to glimpse Washington's views on foreign policy, economics, the law, art, slavery, marriage, and religion-and how those views shaped the young nation.. Ultimately, this sharply written biography offers a fresh perspective on America's Father, uncovering the ideas that shaped his intellectual journey and, subsequently, the development of America.

Book A Biographical Sketch of George Washington

Download or read book A Biographical Sketch of George Washington written by George H. Woodruff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biographical Sketch of George Washington "It was a custom among the ancient Romans," says an eminent writer, "to preserve, in wax, the figures of those, among their ancestors, who were of noble birth, or had been more nobly advanced to the chair of honor by their personal merits and rare exploits. Sallust relates, that - 'Scipio, and other great men, by beholding those likenesses, found enkindled in their breasts so ardent a thirst after virtue as could not be extinguished, till, by the glory of their own actions they had equalled the illustrious objects of their emulation.' - These means and motives may be very good, but it belongs to Christianity alone to inspire her most affectionate friends with views infinitely higher and more imperishable. The good sense and experience of mankind, confirmed by the lapse of ages, have fixed this point, that example is that sort of silent rhetoric which at the same time convinces and persuades." In every respect a great and meritorious man, George Washington was an example to the world, and in Masonic Circles his memory will always be cherished as that of an Ideal Man and Mason. The 100th anniversary of his death will be celebrated with fitting ceremonies by the Free Masons of the United States, under the auspices of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, at Alexandria and Mt. Vernon, on December 14th, 1899. It is not, therefore, wholly from mercenary motives, nor without some sense of propriety, that the National Fraternal League, an association organized by Masons and for Masons, presents this Biographical Sketch at this time to the seventeen thousand members of the Fraternity in Connecticut. The subject matter of the sketch is a collection from various historical sources, with no attempt at anything but a very modest portrayal of those important events in the life of Washington which will ever be of universal interest. Book Washington

Download or read book Washington written by Ron Chernow and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of America. With a breadth and depth matched by no other one-volume life, he carries the reader through Washington's troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian Wars, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention and his magnificent performance as America's first president. Despite the reverence his name inspires Washington remains a waxwork to many readers, worthy but dull, a laconic man of remarkable self-control. But in this groundbreaking work Chernow revises forever the uninspiring stereotype. He portrays Washington as a strapping, celebrated horseman, elegant dancer and tireless hunter, who guarded his emotional life with intriguing ferocity. Not only did Washington gather around himself the foremost figures of the age, including James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, he orchestrated their actions to help realise his vision for the new federal government, define the separation of powers, and establish the office of the presidency. Ron Chernow takes us on a page-turning journey through all the formative events of America's founding. This is a magisterial work from one of America's foremost writers and historians.

Download or read book George Washington written by Washington Irving and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 1994-08-22 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington Irving's Life of George Washington (published in five volumes in 1856-59) was the product of his last years and remains his most personal work. Christened with the name of the great general, Irving was blessed by Washington while still a boy of seven, and later came to know many of the prominent figures of the Revolution. In these pages he describes them using firsthand source material and observation. The result is a book which is fascinating not only for its subject (the American Revolution), but also for how it reveals in illuminating detail the personality and humanity of a now remote, towering icon. Here is an intimate portrait of Washington the man, from Virginia youth to colonial commander to commander-in-chief of the patriot army to first president and great guiding force of the American federation. But one cannot read Irving's Life without marveling at the supreme art behind it, for his biography is foremost a work of literature. Charles Neider's abridgment and editing of Irving's long out-of-print classic has created a literary work comparable in importance and elegance to the original. George Washington, A Biography, Neider's title for his edition of Irving's Life, makes the work accessible to modern audiences. The extensive introduction provides a detailed analysis of Irving's life and times, and the difficulties he faced as he worked against his own failing health to finish what he felt was his masterpiece. This new edition of the superb biography of America's first citizen by America's first literary artist remains as fresh and unique today as when it was penned.
