Book OUR FORTUNATE LIVES

Download or read book OUR FORTUNATE LIVES written by Judy Boyd and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judy Boyd was born at Mataura, in Southland. She had to leave High School before her sixteenth birthday, to go home to the farm and house-keep for the family when her mother was ill. Four years later, she left home to train as a Karitane Nurse in Christchurch. Her parents went overseas for nine months after Judy graduated from Karitane; she returned to the farm to house-keep for her brother, during which time she took babies in at home while their parents were on holiday. Then Judy and Peter Boyd became engaged; he went to Australia on a working holiday, and when her parents returned, Judy also left for a six months' working holiday in Australia. After they married they lived in Taumarunui, Rangiora, New Plymouth, and Christchurch again, and during those first six years their three sons, Hamish, Dougal and Andrew were born. In 1974 they shifted out of town to twenty acres at Broadfields, half way between Hornby and Lincoln. Five years later they planted one and a half acres of blueberries: a thriving commercial venture. At age forty-two, following a year at Mrs Ritchie's Commercial College, Judy became a secretary at Lincoln University and after twelve years working there, she changed departments. Because the new job was only three days a week, she had plenty of time for study and enrolled in an English Degree by correspondence with Massey University. After three years in the new job, she retired from Lincoln, and enrolled at Canterbury University to complete her Honours degree in Creative Writing. Being at a loose end again, she heard about Grant Hindin-Miller's Creative Writing courses at the Continuing Education Department of Canterbury University, and nine years later, in her eightieth year has finally finished her book and at last realized her dream of becoming a writer.

Book THE SPREE OF 83 THE LIFE AND TIMES OF FREDDY POWERS

Download or read book THE SPREE OF 83 THE LIFE AND TIMES OF FREDDY POWERS written by Freddy Powers and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goodreads.com has declared that "eavesdropping on these personal reflections is entertaining, enlightening, and just plain fun to read," and indeed, throughout THE SPREE OF '83, Freddy recounts first-hand the highly-entertaining and emotionally-touching story behind his decades-long roller-coaster ride through the music business, and multiple trips to the top of the charts. He's equally open about his inspiring struggle in the years before his death in 2016 battling Parkinson's disease, all while his legacy endured, gaining new generations of fans over the Millennium. Hailed by Rolling Stone Country as "a freewheeling, often poignant oral history of one of the unsung heroes of Country Music," the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame inductee has been to the top of the Charts as both a producer (Willie Nelson's Grammy-winning Over the Rainbow LP) and songwriter, penning many # 1 hits with sidekick and fellow legend Merle Haggard, who declared "Freddy Powers is one of my favorite people in the world," while Willie Nelson adds personally that "Freddy's strongest suit, I always thought, was his rhythm guitar playing. He was a great rhythm guitar player, and he wrote some great songs with and for Merle." Joining Nelson and Haggard, who both contribute extensive exclusive commentary, are fellow legendary country songwriters/stars like Sonny Throckmorton, Paul Buskirk, Floyd Tillman, Tanya Tucker, Big & Rich, Larry Gatlin, producer Frank Liddell, Mary Sarah, and many more! While fans read along, they can stream live on all digital platforms a dynamic collection of new music, including a 60-Song 2-disc studio/live collection of 6 decades of Freddy Powers' best-known hits, featuring musical duets and collaborations with many of the aforementioned music stars! Along with the Official Book Soundtrack, fans of Freddy's Dixieland Jazz and legendary Comedy routines are given a front-row seat with Freddy Powers & The Powerhouse IV: LIVE IN VEGAS – '75! and Freddy Powers & The Powerhouse IV: LIVE IN RENO! Critical Praise: "(Freddy has) demonstrated a dedication to broadening the perimeters of country & western, particularly in creating a fusion of country honky tonk and swing jazz. This interest runs throughout Powers' career." – Country Music Television (CMT) "I think he's one of the least-recognized of the great country songwriters. His music will be great in any era, no matter what year it is, you'll still want to hear a Freddy Powers song." - Tanya Tucker

Book The Sharp End of Life

Download or read book The Sharp End of Life written by Dierdre Wolownick and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wife and mother. Teacher and musician. Marathoner and rock climber. At 66, Dierdre Wolownick-Honnold became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan in Yosemite--and in The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story, she shares her intimate journey, revealing how her climbing achievement reflects a broader story of courage and persistence. Dierdre grew up under the watchful eyes of a domineering mother and realized early on that her parents’ plans for her future weren’t what she wanted for herself. Later, what seemed like a storybook romance brought escape, with new experiences and eye-opening travel, but she quickly discovered that her husband was not the happy-go-lucky man he had first appeared. Adapting as best she could, Dierdre juggled work and raising two young children, encouraging them to be fearlessly confident. She noted with delight how her “little lady” Stasia took it upon herself to look out for her baby brother, and watched in amazement as Alex (Honnold of "Free Solo" fame) started climbing practically before he could crawl. After years of struggle in her marriage and her ultimate divorce, Dierdre found inspiration in her now-adult children’s passions, as well as new depths within herself. At Stasia’s urging, she took up running at age 54 and soon completed several marathons. Then at age 58, Alex led her on her first rock climbs. A world of friendship and support suddenly opened up to her within the climbing “tribe,” culminating in her record-setting ascent of El Cap with her son. From confused young wife and busy but lonely mother to confident middle-aged athlete, Dierdre brings the reader along as she finds new strength, happiness, and community in the outdoors--and a life of learning, acceptance, and spirit.
