Book Understanding Human Rights

Download or read book Understanding Human Rights written by Paula Gerber and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first scholarly analysis of the United Nations' work in the field of human rights education (HRE) and examines why HRE is so important. Paula Gerber argues that international law can learn from the medical profession, which has long recognised that 'prevention is better than cure'. There is an urgent need for HRE to be recognised as one of the best ways of preventing future human rights abuses; it is, in essence, a prophylactic for human rights violations. The book explores the provenance of human rights education in international law before critiquing the UNs work in this area across numerous different organs, including treaty committees, the Human Rights Council, General Assembly and Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The author identifies a number of deficiencies in the UNs HRE activities, and makes recommendations for how the UN can more effectively promote HRE and increase states compliance with their international HRE obligations. This book provides a unique and timely insight into the workings of the UN in this vital aspect of international human rights law. Understanding Human Rights will strongly appeal to UN Bureaucrats, civil servants, human rights academics, human rights institutions and NGOs.

Book Environmental Wellness

Download or read book Environmental Wellness written by Dr. Gargi Rana and published by Singh Publication. This book was released on with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Health is being challenged globally by a number of factors. The fast-paced development has led to several problems that are interrelated and variable, ill-defined, incomplete, challenging and difficult to resolve. Climate change, deforestation, urbanization, loss of biodiversity, STDs, zoonotic illnesses, and other concerns are examples of various factors when it comes to current global health emergencies. These issues are among the continuing challenges in global health because they are complicated, multidimensional, and significantly influenced by social, economic, and political variables. The 21st century faces unprecedented environmental changes, from climate change and urbanization to deforestation, biodiversity, loss of natural resources and habitat. Accelerated economic growth with high consumption level in developed countries and aspirations of developing countries to reach matching levels of growth are continuing to damage our planet. As Earth’s ecosystems are disrupted, we face the loss of ecosystem services and even the spread of zoonotic disease, COVID-19 is an example to it. Developing nations like India face even bigger challenge as India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world and will continue its rapid urbanisation and economic development in the coming decades. Unfortunately, this growth is at the cost of degrading environment health in the form of rising consumption and demand for energy, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and constraints on critical natural resources such as land, water and biodiversity harboured by them. Every problem has a solution and an old adage says “When there is a Will there is a Way”. This book not only discusses the reasons and effects of the environmental damage but also about the way out for a better and healthy environment and Environment Wellness. A collective effort, cooperation and commitment from all sectors of society needs to be thoroughly comprehend for Environmental Wellness.

Book UN Security Council Reform and the Right of Veto

Download or read book UN Security Council Reform and the Right of Veto written by Bardo Fassbender and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a timely contribution to the present discussion of a constitutional reform of the United Nations, a discussion rekindled by the end of the cold War and the significant involvement of the UN in international peacemaking and peacekeeping since the Kuwait crisis. Like the new debate, the work focuses on the Security Council, its composition and possible enlargement, its decision-making process and competences, and its relationship with the General Assembly and the International Court of Justice. Particular regard is given to the right of veto of the permanent members of the Security Council, which is seen as the central, and most problematic, feature of the present constitution of the UN. The work describes and analyzes the reform discussion as it has taken place at the UN since 1991. The different proposals made by governments, NGOs and individual scholars are evaluated by applying a number of standards and concepts ensuing from a perception of the UN Charter as constitution of the international community. Thus, the study advances a comprehensive constitutional theory of the UN and redefines the place of the Charter in contemporary international law.
