Download or read book With Friends written by Robert Cozzolino and published by Chazen Museum of Art. This book was released on 2005 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhibition catalogue focuses on the art and friendships of the American artists Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977), Sylvia Fein (b. 1919), Marshall Glasier (1902-1988), Dudley Huppler (1917-1988), Karl Priebe (1914-1976), and John Wilde (b. 1919). The first intensive study of this close-knit group explores the artistic and personal relationships they shared. Cozzolino provides insight into a figurative branch of postwar American modernism that has been often neglected in favor of abstract expressionism. Download or read book The Art of Toshiko Takaezu written by Peter Held and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the artistic development of renowned potter Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011), this masterful study celebrates and analyzes an artist who held a significant place in the post-World War II craft movement in America. Born in Hawaii of Japanese descent in 1922, Takaezu worked actively in clay, fiber, and bronze for over sixty years. Influenced by midcentury modernism, her work transformed from functional vessels to abstract sculptural forms and installations. Over the years, continued to draw on a combination of Eastern and Western techniques and aesthetics, as well as her love of the natural world. In particular, Takaezu's vertical closed forms became a symbol of her work, created through a combination of wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques that allowed her to grow her vessels vertically and eased the circular restrictions of the wheel. In addition to her art, Takaezu was renowned for her teaching, including twenty years at Princeton University. This beautifully illustrated book offers the first scholarly analysis of Takaezu's life work and includes essays by Paul Smith, director emeritus of the American Craft Museum, and Janet Koplos, former senior editor of Art in America. Jack Lenor Larsen, a textile designer, author, collector, and advocate of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship, provides a foreword.
Download or read book Sarkis written by Gordon Orear and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Asia Minor in 1909, Sarkis Sarkisian came to Detroit at the age of 14. He studied formally under John P. Wicker at the Wicker School of Fine Arts and for the next fifty years, he evolved into a leader of the city's artistic community. A teacher and the director of the Art School of Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, now the Center for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design, he influenced generations of art students. This book is a study of Sarkis as an artist and as a teacher. A classicist in his belief that the mission of the artist is to create beauty and to represent the inner life of the spirit, Sarkis endowed his paintings with gravity and grace. His emphasis on the formal elements of art, in his painting and in his teaching, did not obscure the humanism that influenced both. Sarkis celebrates the achievements and contributions of this remarkable artist.
