They make a case for an expansive definition of the field, one that embraces an interdisciplinary literature on the connections between global politics and environmental change. The remaining chapters are divided into three broad themes states, governance and security; capitalism, trade and corporations; and knowledge, civil societies and ethics with each section providing a cohesive discussion of current issues. In-depth explorations are given to topics such as: global commons, renewable energy, the effectiveness of environmental cooperation, regulations and corporate standards, trade liberalization and global environmental governance, and science and environmental citizenship. A comprehensive survey of the latest research, the Handbook is a necessary reference for scholars, students and policymakers in the field of global environmental politics.

Book Water Management in Megacities

Download or read book Water Management in Megacities written by Cecilia Tortajada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient and equitable water, wastewater and stormwater management for the megacities is becoming an increasingly complex task. The special issue will focus on water management in its totality for megacities, including their technical, social, economic, legal, institutional and environmental dimensions through a series of specially invited case studies from different megacities of the world. At present, around one out of two of the earth’s 6.3 billion people live in urban areas. Each year, the world population grows by around 80 millions. Practically all of this growth is urban, primarily due to migration. World’s urban population is expected to reach 5 billion by 2030, which is nearly 2/3rd more than in 2000, and would mean that 60% of world’s population will live in urban areas. The case studies analysed include some of the most interesting and challenging megacities of this planet, Dhaka, Istanbul, Jakarta, Johannesburg, México City, Riyadh and São Paulo. They assess different aspects of how water is intermingled in the overall development milleau. The special issue will considers the magnitudes, nature and extent of the present and future challenges and how these could be meet in socially acceptable and cost-effective ways. The contributors are all acknowledged water experts from different parts of the world. This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resource s Development.

Book Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment VII

Download or read book Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment VII written by Hermann H. Hahn and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treating potable and polluted water for the world's population is still one of our most important challenges. The United Nations estimate that more than 1.2 billion people suffer from inadequate water supply and an even larger number, up to 4 billion people, are without hygienic disposal of waste and wastewater. Water technology and the necessary "know-how transfer", has been the key objective of the Gothenburg symposia from the very beginning. The contents of this book respond to these challenges and demonstrate the impressive development of the field of chemical waster and wastewater treatment. The Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment Series provides authoritative coverage of the key current developments in the chemical treatment of water and wastewater in theory or practice and related problems such a s sludge production and properties, and the reuse of chemicals and chemically-treated waters and sludges. For the tenth in the series, the contributions document the development if the field of chemical water and wastewater technology, both in terms of new technological developments as well as public and administrative acceptance and approval of the solutions offered. Such new developments include the use of membrane technology, the application of computational tools for kinetic process modelling and optimisation as well as the use of advanced oxidation processes in actual water treatment. Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment VII covers fundamental science, new technological developments and practical experience and is an invaluable reference source for engineers scientists and administrators, active in the treatment of drinking water, municipal and industrial wastewater and sludges.

Book Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply

Download or read book Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply written by Ashok K. Sharma and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainwater tank systems have been widely adopted across the world to provide a safe local source of water in underdeveloped rural areas, a substitution for mains water for non potable end uses in water stressed urban areas, as well as providing flooding control in monsoonal climates such as Korea, or combined sewer systems such as Germany. The importance of these systems in cities has grown, as water managers seek to provide a range of decentralised solutions to supply constraints of current water supply systems, whilst reducing the impact of urban development on the natural environment, and increasing resilience to the impacts of climate change. Rainwater tank systems are now often implemented under integrated urban water management (IUWM) and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) philosophies, which take a holistic view of the urban water cycle. Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply is based on a comprehensive, multi-million dollar research program that was undertaken in South East Queensland (SEQ) Australia in response to the Millennium drought when the water supply level in the regions drinking water dams dropped to 17% in July 2007 and the area came close to running out of water. In particular, the book provides insights and detailed analysis of design, modelling, implementation, operation, energy usage, economics, management, health risk, social perceptions and implications for water quality/quantity of roof water runoff. The approaches and methodologies included in Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply inform and validate research programs, and provide insights on the expected performance and potential pitfalls of the adoption of rainwater tanks systems including: actual harvested yield and resulting mains water savings, optimal sizing for rainwater storages and roof collection systems, expected water quality and implications for managing public health risks, modelling tools available for decision support, operation and management approaches of a decentralised asset at the household scale and community acceptance. The book is suitable for use at undergraduate and post graduate levels and is of particular interest to water professionals across the globe, who are involved in the strategic water planning for a town, city or a region. It is a valuable resource for developers, civil designers, water planners, architects and plumbers seeking to implement sustainable water servicing approaches for residential, industrial and commercial developments.

Book Southeast Asian Water Environment 2

Download or read book Southeast Asian Water Environment 2 written by Hiroaki Furumai and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southeast Asian environment has been degraded by the release of industrial and domestic wastes, agricultural and aquacultural chemicals, and pollutants from automobiles. It suffers from water-related disasters, Tsunami, floods, typhoons, etc. In order to deal with these issues an integrated approach from the inhabitants, governments and researchers is essential. The environmental threats arising from the increasing population, overuse of natural resources, industrialization, urbanization, and natural disasters present ever increasing challenges to pursuing sustainable development of the region. Many developed countries such as Japan have experiences of dealing with severe environmental pollution and this publication is the result of building an academic network among researchers of related fields from different regions to exchange information. The most important articles presented at the Second (Vietnam 2004) and the Third (Thailand, 2005) International Symposiums on Southeast Asian Water Environment have been selected for this book. This book will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with achieving global sustainability within the water environment in developing regions, including researchers, policy makers, NGOs and NPOs.
