Book Financial Success in the Year 2000 and Beyond

Download or read book Financial Success in the Year 2000 and Beyond written by Larry Chambers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-11-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's investor faces a much larger challenge than those of just ten years ago. The size and complexities of the financial marketplace create confusion. The Dow Jones industrial average has doubled in the past two and a half years, and 10,000 on the Dow is no longer a fantasy. Money keeps flooding into the market. The New York Stock Exchange daily trading volume is four times that of 1990. Financial Success in the Year 2000 and Beyond covers financial planning and asset management, the fastest growing segments of the financial services industry. In the old days, highly commissioned salesmen would simply tell their clients what products to buy. Today, there are infinitely more choices and investments options to sort through and be concerned about. Technology has put complex investing tools into the hands of ordinary people, without good advice on how to use them. Never have so many people experienced so much control over their financial futures, yet felt a need for so much help. Applying lessons learned from past mistakes is hard and discouraging. Most people become investors without the wisdom of experience, getting the tests without first getting the lessons. Financial Success in the Year 2000 and Beyond explores virtually every aspect of financial planning and dispels many of the myths and mysteries surrounding investing and investments. The Experts include: Dennis R. Fletcher, CLU, ChFC, Oshkosh, WI , Joseph D. Longo, CLU, CFP, LUTCF, LIC, Troy, MI, Tom Nohr, CFP, RFC, Castro Valley, CA, Floyd L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2000 Years of World History is a new presentation of the history of the world. The history of the world's civilizations is told in one continuous run with minimum emphasis on the separation of nations.National histories serve the needs of individual nationals. American history deals with those events considered significant to America, and likewise French history focuses on those that have meanings to the French. However, studying the histories of the Americans, the French, and others does not equate with studying the history of the world. No nation is an island. Past events of a country, its history, were intrinsically interwoven with those of other countries, be it through cultural exchange (the spreading of the knowledge of paper-making, use of gun powder, etc.), diplomatic intercourse (evangelizing of religions, the opening of Japanese ports by Matthew C. Perry, etc.), or conflict (no example needs to be given).National histories, because of their preoccupation with national interests, often place secondary emphasis on events beyond that scope, and that can lead to bias; bias in the sense that our understanding of such events can take on a skewed perspective. This prejudice can further be slanted due to nationalism. That is the root of the Walter Benjamin quote: "History is written by the victors." The writers of national histories tend to shine their nations in good light. That leads to the coloring of good and evil, and right or wrong. The fact is, historical events should not be understood in such moralistic terms. They should be presented as facts-not even interpretations of facts, but facts based on evidence. We should let the history users draw their own conclusions on these events of the past and make their own moral determination, rather than imposing on them our notion of moral values. An example would be the ongoing conflict in Syria. The United States is backing the rebels against the Syrian government, and the president of Syria, Bashar Hafez al-Assad, is branded a monster. He kills his own people. He should be brought to trial as a war crime offender. These are all judgment-loaded assertions. If one were to read pro-Syria reporting, one would get a completely opposite sense. The Syrian government is battling rebels, who are Syrians. Therefore, the Syrian government is of course killing its own people. By siding with the rebels, who are thus anointed as being on the right, the Syrian government is naturally cast as the villain. However, the Syrian government was in place before the challenge of the rebels. Does it not have the right to defend itself, or do we expect the Syrian government to lay down its arms and proclaim, "Ah, we have learned from the Americans that we are the bad guys, so we now surrender and make room for the good guys"?History with a world view allows us to take a bird's-eye view of international events. If we were to do that with the Syrian analogy we would be instead focusing on the involvements of not just Syria and USA, but Iraq, Turkey, the Kurds, Russia, and Iran and Israel, each having its interests at stake. We will quickly shed our attachment to the notions of good vs. evil and who is right and who is wrong.Extant history, often that which is taught in classrooms, is fraught with such moralistic proselytizing, and it distracts from our attempt to understand what happened in the past and learn from it. These involve issues of ethnicity, culture, and even definitions of nations. An example would be the long history of Egypt. The Egypt of today is not the Egypt of 2,000 years ago. The old Egypt is dead. Its language is no longer spoken. Its customs are no longer practiced. It therefore arouses a feeling of incongruity when the Egyptian cultural minister uses the phrase "our heritage."2000 Years of World History attempts to present history in a renewed light.Follow-up volume: 2000 Years of World History BCE (How we came to be.)

Download or read book Beyond Belief written by James McDonald and published by Ithaca Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from a neutral position, this book looks at claims made by Christian leaders over the centuries and analyses them in the light of modern scholarship. Erudite yet mischievous, the book's scope is wide, from early history to the present day, from America to China, and spanning many different disciplines. Many of the conclusions reached will shock devout believers, though all of them can be verified with reference to sympathetic works by biblical scholars and theologians. A recurring theme is that of open secrets - facts well known to historians and other academics in the Church, but kept from the faithful masses. These open secrets are not actively denied, just avoided so as not to cause offence to those who are familiar only with the Sunday-School version of events. Many Christians see their system of belief as dating from the earliest times, but this idea becomes difficult to sustain in the light of when and how key doctrines were established. Many ordinary Christians would be shocked to discover, for example, the prominent role played by violence and forgery in developing and promoting Christian doctrine. Whatever one's own religious beliefs, the Christian Churches provide huge amounts of material for the enquiring mind. Repercussions from crusades that happened over 900 years ago are still in evidence today. The division of the Roman Empire in early Christian times also reverberates to the present day. To a large extent, the history of the Western World over the last 2,000 years is the history of the Christian Church. Without a proper understanding of the role of the Church, it is not possible to truly understand the history of Europe, the Middle East, or indeed the Americas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful retrospective analysis of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting aftermath considers society's response to the attack, long-term implications of the shooting, and the ways in which research and related policy must continue to move forward. An indispensable resource for anyone interested in learning about the long-term impact of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, Columbine, 20 Years Later and Beyond provides a comprehensive look at how the event unfolded, what has changed since the attack, and how this information can be used to prevent future mass shootings. Authors Jaclyn Schildkraut and Glenn Muschert, both experts on mass shootings, share their broad understanding of this tragedy and its aftermath. Columbine became the measuring stick against which all other mass shootings would be compared, and this book details with great sensitivity the ensuing changes to school security, law enforcement's response to active shooter situations, threat assessment practices, legislative efforts, and media coverage of unfolding situations. With delicacy and tact, Schildkraut and Muschert help to answer the painful question raised by a stone on the wall of the Columbine Memorial: "What have we learned?".

Book Observational Plasma Astrophysics Five Years of Yohkoh and Beyond

Download or read book Observational Plasma Astrophysics Five Years of Yohkoh and Beyond written by Tetsuya Watanabe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its launch in 1991, the Yohkoh satellite has been returning unprecedented observations of solar flares and the dynamic solar corona. This book is a collection of papers presented at a meeting held in: Yoyogi, Tokyo, on the occasion of Yohkoh's fifth anniversary of operation. The papers constitute a summary of observations and results over the five years, including contributions based on data from Yohkoh's hard and soft X-ray telescopes and its spectrometer experiments. The five years of data, covering approximately one-half of a solar cycle, reveal a fresh perspective on solar science, with a new picture of solar flares and the active Sun emerging. Also, for the first time there are extensive results from Yohkoh observations of the Sun during the solar minimum period. This wide-ranging volume will be of interest to workers in solar physics and X-ray astronomy. It also contains material appropriate for supplemental reading for graduate students in solar physics.
