Specific goals were to determine: the area of forest harvested by clear-cutting and the area removed from forest to other uses by the removal of tree cover; the area of softwood stands experiencing mortality greater than one hectare in size; and the age and vigour of softwood stands harvested between 1990 and 1994. Survey methodology is described and results are presented by region, tree type, and species. Field survey results from visits to 123 softwood clear-cuts and measurements of 840 stumps are also presented, showing age, average diameter growth, and defects of dominant trees in harvested stands.
