Book excerpt: Storyteller blends original short stories and poetry influenced by the traditional oral tales that Leslie Marmon Silko heard growing up on the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico with autobiographical passages, folktales, family memories, and photographs. As she mixes traditional and Western literary genres, Silko examines themes of memory, alienation, power, and identity; communicates Native American notions regarding time, nature, and spirituality; and explores how stories and storytelling shape people and communities. Storyteller illustrates how one can frame collective cultural identity in contemporary literary forms, as well as illuminates the importance of myth, oral tradition, and ritual in Silko's own work.

Book The History of Mathematical Tables

Download or read book The History of Mathematical Tables written by Martin Campbell-Kelly and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-10-02 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest known mathematical table was found in the ancient Sumerian city of Shuruppag in southern Iraq. Since then, tables have been an important feature of mathematical activity; table making and printed tabular matter are important precursors to modern computing and information processing. This book contains a series of articles summarising the technical, institutional and intellectual history of mathematical tables from earliest times until the late twentieth century. It covers mathematical tables (the most important computing aid for several hundred years until the 1960s), data tables (eg. Census tables), professional tables (eg. insurance tables), and spreadsheets - the most recent tabular innovation. The book is presented in a scholarly yet accessible way, making appropriate use of text boxes and illustrations. Each chapter has a frontispiece featuring a table along with a small illustration of the source where the table was first displayed. Most chapters have sidebars telling a short "story" or history relating to the chapter. The aim of this edited volume is to capture the history of tables through eleven chapters written by subject specialists. The contributors describe the various information processing techniques and artefacts whose unifying concept is "the mathematical table".

Book The Fragmentary Latin Poets

Download or read book The Fragmentary Latin Poets written by Edward Courtney and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand fully the development of Latin poetry, one has to consider not only the prominent figures whose works survive entire but also the writers known to us only in fragments, usually small, from quotations. The fragments of the non-dramatic poets have been collected by Baehrens, Morel, and Buchner, but only a few have ever received a commentary. This book revises the texts, taking advantage of much earlier work now largely forgotten, and provides the necessary interpretative and illustrative material. By building up, wherever possible, a picture of each writer, Professor Courtneyplaces them in relation to the development of Latin poetry and thus gathers together information at present widely scattered and not easy to locate. While omitting some material which does not contribute to the focus of the book, he adds some writers not usually included in this corpus -particularly Tiberianus, the so-called De Bello Actiaco and the minor works of Ennius.

  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2013-02-01

Download or read book The Long Lingering Shadow written by Robert J. Cottrol and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of American history know of the law’s critical role in systematizing a racial hierarchy in the United States. Showing that this history is best appreciated in a comparative perspective, The Long, Lingering Shadow looks at the parallel legal histories of race relations in the United States, Brazil, and Spanish America. Robert J. Cottrol takes the reader on a journey from the origins of New World slavery in colonial Latin America to current debates and litigation over affirmative action in Brazil and the United States, as well as contemporary struggles against racial discrimination and Afro-Latin invisibility in the Spanish-speaking nations of the hemisphere. Ranging across such topics as slavery, emancipation, scientific racism, immigration policies, racial classifications, and legal processes, Cottrol unravels a complex odyssey. By the eve of the Civil War, the U.S. slave system was rooted in a legal and cultural foundation of racial exclusion unmatched in the Western Hemisphere. That system’s legacy was later echoed in Jim Crow, the practice of legally mandated segregation. Jim Crow in turn caused leading Latin Americans to regard their nations as models of racial equality because their laws did not mandate racial discrimination— a belief that masked very real patterns of racism throughout the Americas. And yet, Cottrol says, if the United States has had a history of more-rigid racial exclusion, since the Second World War it has also had a more thorough civil rights revolution, with significant legal victories over racial discrimination. Cottrol explores this remarkable transformation and shows how it is now inspiring civil rights activists throughout the Americas.

Book Strategies for Teachers

Download or read book Strategies for Teachers written by Paul D. Eggen and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This K-12 teaching methods text opens each chapter with case studies illustrating the model in actual classroom practice and translates cognitive principles of learning into teaching strategies. As in past editions, the fourth edition of Strategies for Teachers continues to focus on instruction, using a models approach, linking prescriptive teaching strategies to specific content and thinking goals. This edition is composed of two main parts: the first two chapters outline advances in effective teaching and the teaching of thinking. The remaining chapters offer detailed coverage of the individual models, including suggestions for modifications that make them adaptable to a variety of teaching-learning situations. The text focuses on active learning, the use of research, psychology and experience, and emphasizes the teacher's central role in the learning process. New chapters on social interaction models and problem-based learning explain and illustrate applications of these models in classrooms. The practicality of this text is one of its key selling points, promising to make the fourth edition as vital a tool for instructors and students as the previous editions have been.
