Book Paths to Contemporary French Literature

Download or read book Paths to Contemporary French Literature written by John Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praised for his independence, curiosity, intimate knowledge of French literature, and sharp reader's eye, John Taylor is a writer-critic who is naturally skeptical of literary fashions, overnight reputations, and readymade academic categories. Here he examines various genres of politically committed literature (such as Jean Hatzfeld's "narratives" about Rwanda or Tchicaya U Tam'si's verse), some overlooked fiction, and several provocative experiments with literary form (ranging from the poetry of Jean-Paul Michel and Marie etienne to the "three-line novels" of Felix Feneon).Taylor continues to reveal the remarkable resourcefulness of French writing. Besides drawing attention to authors (like Dai Sijie or Albert Cossery) who have come to French from other languages, he has added younger novelists to his critical panorama.Challenging persistent cliches and recovering deserving voices from unjust neglect, Taylor's vision of French literature conjures up the image of a vital nexus. Poetry crisscrosses with prose, writers from one generation meet up with those from the next or the previous one, while the philosophical ideas underlying French writing are scrutinized. This is an essential guide to the realities of French culture today.

Download or read book The Theater of Fernand Crommelynck written by Fernand Crommelynck and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He typically starts out from a realistic situation, then introduces a twist in the psyche of the main character that launches the rest of the action - for example, in The Magnanimous Cuckold a suspected glimmer of lust in Petrus's eye suffices to incite Bruno and to subjugate the other figures in the play to his expression of folly - and the realistic is soon overtaken by the obsessional and finally the absurd.

Book What Were Little Girls and Boys Made Of

Download or read book What Were Little Girls and Boys Made Of written by Laura S. Strumingher and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primary School Books were vehicles by which authors in nineteenth-century France hoped to shape the future. These authors, members of the middle class, believed in reason and progress and in their own ability to ascertain what was reasonable and to enforce progress. Not surprisingly, they did not always get the cooperation of the people whom they were trying to lead to a civilized life. Peasants, who made up the largest population of those needing progress, in the view of the middle class, did not accept new ideas unquestionably. They worked out their own compromises, evasions, and selections from the portrait of the good life presented to them in the village primary schools. The books of Zulma Carraud are particularly interesting because they were directed specifically to socializing rural children to modern gender roles. Annotated excerpts from her best-selling books, La Petite Jeanne ou le devior and Maurice ou le travail, highlight the growing difference between women's work, which is referred to as "duty" and is portrayed as an expansion of woman's nature, and men's work, which remains a duty to his family, country, and God, but more importantly, becomes a source of fulfillment, provides a sense of achievement and of self worth. In Carraud's books, men use their skills to tame nature, to create civilization, in an ever-expanding field of endeavors, while women's work remains confined to child nurture, house care, care of the sick and elderly. The process of inculcating new values is traced with the aid of school inspectors' reports, the letters and diaries of teachers, and a collection of notebooks kept by rural pupils. These documents provide a rare view of the dialectic nature of historical change.

Book Five Ballets from Paris and St Petersburg

Download or read book Five Ballets from Paris and St Petersburg written by Doug Fullington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 889 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers something entirely new: detailed scene-by-scene descriptions of the action and dancing of Giselle, Paquita, Le Corsaire, La Bayadère, and Raymonda, bringing the reader far closer to what the audience saw when the curtain went up on these five classic story ballets than has heretofore been possible. Drawing on archival documents, the authors show that these ballets were like today's pop entertainment: funnier, more violent, more spectacular, and with female characters far stronger than one might expect. This rigorously researched book fills huge gaps in dance history and is bound to be of interest to practitioners, scholars, and devotees of ballet and the arts.
