Book Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern

Download or read book Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern written by Ervad Phiroze Shapurji Masani and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern: Comprising a Review of Dr. Dhalla's Book of Zoroastrian Theology The courageous action of that great Parsi, the late lamented Sir Dinshah Dhanjibhai Davar in convincing his colleagues on the board of the Parsi Panchayat Trustees, that Dr. Dhalla's book on Zoroastrian Theology was not worthy of the Trustees support, inasmuch as it was written along heterodox lines that were calculated to injure the deep-rooted religious sentiments of the large majority of his co-religionists, by reason of the doubts and ridicule cast therein on their time-hallowed tenets and practices, aroused great indignation and much recrimination in the tiny camp of so-called Keformers, but gave intense satisfaction to the community at large. It will be a matter of further satisfaction to my co-religionists (barring a handful of misguided Progress(! )-valas) that Ervad Pheroze Shahpoorji Masani, that energetic, enthusiastic and learned Athornan, who has won deserved popularity by his courageous efforts after religious revival and social purity, should have undertaken the task of publishing a detailed reply to the many harmful doctrines and interpretations which Dr. Dhalla has ventilated in that book. It is no doubt true that the ideas embodied in "Zoroastrian Theology" are not in any sense new or original, but are repetitions of what a thimbleful of self-styled reformers(!) have been moving heaven and earth, in season and out of season, to promulgate in the Parsi community; and though the latter, as a whole, has treated such attempts with silent con tempt, and turned a sneering deaf-ear to the fads of the more or less materialistic Sudharavalas, it might be as well to have in print a reply to these oft repeated arguments from one who is well qualified to refute them. Ervad Masani has received high University education and has for nearly twelve years made a study of the Parsi Scriptures in their original languages, the Avesta and Pahlavi. Book excerpt: As a Strong believer in the moral value of all major religions and as an advocate of interfaith understanding and religious harmony, I congratulate Mr Kabraji on his effort. His Holiness Dalai Lama Zoroastrianism is the oldest of the revealed world-religions, and it has probably had more influence on mankind, directly and indirectly, than any other single faith. Mary Boyce, Zoroastrians: Their Religious Beliefs and Practices Zarathushtra was the greatest of all the pioneer prophets who showed the path of freedom to men, the freedom of moral choice, freedom from blind obedience to unmeaning injunctions freedom from multiplicity of shrines which draw our worship away from the single-minded chastity of devotion. Though surrounded by the believers in magical rites, he proclaimed in those dark days of unreason that Religion has its truth in its moral significance, not in external practices of imaginary value; that it is to upholdman in his life of good thoughts, good words and good deeds Rabindranath Tagore in the Religion of Man -Believe not what you hear; - believe not legends; - believe not gossip, - believe not what you are habituated to listening to since childhood; - believe not because it comes from the lips of the elders; - but apply it to your own study, examine it, ponder on it and believe only what your intelligence accepts. Book The Bundahisn

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2020
  • ISBN : 0190879041
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Bundahisn written by and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""The Bundahišn, meaning primal or foundational creation, is the central Zoroastrian account of creation, cosmology, and eschatology, and one of the most important of the surviving testaments to Zoroastrian literature and pre-Islamic Iranian culture. Touching on geography, cosmogony, anthropology, zoology, astronomy, medicine, legend, and myth, the Bundahišn can be considered a concise compendium of Zoroastrian knowledge. The Bundahišn is well known in the field as an essential primary source for the study of ancient Iranian history, religions, literature, and languages. It is one of the most important texts composed in Zoroastrian Middle Persian, also known as Zoroastrian Book Pahlavi, in the centuries after the fall of the Sasanian Empire to the invading Arab and Islamic forces in the mid seventh century. The Bundahišn provides scholars with a particularly profitable window on Zoroastrianism's intellectual and religious history at a crucial transitional moment: centuries after the composition of the Avesta, the Zoroastrian sacred scriptures, and before the transformation of Zoroastrianism into a minority religion within Iran and adherents' dispersion throughout Central and South Asia. However, the Bundahišn is not only a scholarly tract. It is also a great work of literature in its own right, and ranks alongside the creation myths of other ancient traditions: Genesis, the Babylonian Emunah Elish, Hesiod's Theogony, and others. Informed by the latest research in Iranian Studies, this translation aims to bring to the fore the aesthetic quality, literary style, and complexity of this important work.""--
