Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology for High Schools and Academies At the present day, natural science is finding a place in the most elementary courses of study; and nothing is wiser or more natural than this, since it is in childhood that interest is most readily aroused and the observing faculties most easily trained. But the teacher of biology in a crowded graded school has many difficulties with which to contend. Every one will admit that he who knows a few things well is better equipped for any field of work than he who has a superficial knowledge of many things; and nowhere is this more true than in any department of natural science. The zoologist who has thoroughly studied a few typical forms has a basis on which to build, which no amount of more general but less definite knowledge can give him. Our colleges with well-appointed laboratories afford every facility for thorough investigation, in dissection, and in microscopic and other independent work; but in schools where classes are large and time limited, and where no laboratory is provided, such work is practically impossible. After several years of experience in teaching zoology in the lowest grade of a high school, the author has become convinced that a textbook in which a few typical forms are clearly yet simply described should be used for class work, and this supplemented by outside individual work on the part of the pupil. Book Zoology for High Schools and Colleges

Download or read book Zoology for High Schools and Colleges written by A. S. Packard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology for High Schools and Colleges This book is designed to be used quite as much in the laboratory or with specimens in hand, as in the class-room. If Zoology is to be studied as a mental discipline, or even if the student desires simply to get at a genuine knowledge, at first hand, of the structure of the leading types of animal life, he must examine living animals, watch their movements and habits, and finally dissect them, as well as study their mode of growth before and after leaving the egg or the parent, as the case may be. But the young student in a few weeks' study in the laboratory cannot learn all the principles of the science. Hence, he needs a teacher, a guide, or at least a manual of instruction. This work is an expansion of a course of lectures for college students, but has been prepared to suit the wants of the general reader who would obtain some idea of the principles of the science as generally accepted by advanced zoologists, in order that he may understand the philosophical discussions and writings relating to modem doctrines of biology, especially the law of evolution and the relations between animals and their surroundings. The book has been prepared, so far as possible, on the inductive method. The student is presented first with the facts; is led to a thorough study of a few typical forms, taught to compare these with others, and finally led to the principles or inductions growing out of the facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Zoology: For Schools and Colleges On the other hand, the objects which belong to the animal and vegetable kingdoms differ from those which are comprised in the mineral kingdom in the following points: a. They are composed of few chemical elements, of which carbon, hydro gen, oxygen, and nitrogen, are the most important; and these elements are combined to form complex organic compounds, which always contain a large proportion of water, are very nu stable, and are prone to spontaneous decomposition. 6. They are composed of diverse or heterogeneous parts, which have usually more or less definite relations to one another. These heterogeneous but related parts are termed organs, and the objects possessing them are said to be organized. Some of the lowest forms of animals have bodies composed of so uni form a substance that they cannot be said to be organized, as they exhibit no definite organs. This exception, however, does not affect the general value of this distinction. 0. They are always more or less definite in shape, presenting concave and convex surfaces, and being bounded by curved lines. 07. When they increase in size, or grow, they do so, not by the addi tion of particles from the outside, but by the reception of foreign matter into their interior and its assimilation there (technically called intussusception e. They invariably pass through certain periodic changes in a definite and dis coverable order; these changes constituting life. They are subject to the same physical and chemical laws as those which govern dead matter, but the living body is the seat of some thing in virtue of which it can override the physical laws which enslave mere dead matter. The living body, so long as it is a living body, is the seat of energy, and can overcome the primary law of the inertia of matter. It has certain relations with the outer world other than the merely passive ones of dead matter. However humble it may be, and even if it be permanently rooted to one place, some part or other of every living body possesses the power of spontaneous and inde pendent motionma power possessed by nothing that is dead. In the higher animals the relations of the living body to dead nature become still further complicated, and their mastery over the physical forces becomes more and more pronounced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synoptic Text-Book of Zoölogy, for Colleges and Schools The up-to-date text-books at present available in English seem to be designed either exclusively for pupils of our high schools and academies, or else for college students who intend to become specialists in zoology, so that the college professor must refer his students to books either too elementary for them, or too unreliable because antiquated, or to such as enter into details which belong more properly to the specialist or to the subject of comparative anatomy studied with extensive dissecting in the laboratory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Zoology: An Introduction to the Study of Animals for Secondary Schools and Academies This volume is not intended to add anything to the science of Zoology. It is not for the investigator, it is for the beginner. The author has found that laboratory guides are as a rule too dry and conventional to accomplish the best results and he has accordingly attempted to make these directions simple and suggestive as well as comprehensive. The plan of these studies was worked out in the Manual Training High School, Kansas City, Mo., where it was thoroughly tested with students of all grades of the high school. The book has also been tested in two Normal Schools and in several high schools and has been found to warrant the claims made for it. Information about animals comes to the child from three sources, viz.: from a study of the animal itself, from a study of the environment, from reference books and lectures by the teacher. This book emphasizes the first and second of these sources and it is expected that the teacher will see that the third is not neglected. The author has gleaned from so many sources that it would be impossible to acknowledge them all, but he desires to make special mention of the assistance of his associate, Mr. A. N. Young, on the Branch Vermes and on various other parts of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Zoology: A Guide to the Study of Animals; For the Use of Secondary Schools The aim of this book is first of all to lead young people to an acquaintance with the principal kinds of animals, especially as they are found in nature. Consequently little stress is laid on anatomy, although anatomy is, it is true, the basis of our present classification of animals. More stress is laid on the relation of organisms to environ ment - ec'ology or bionomics - and to man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology: A Text-Book for Secondary Schools, Normal Schools and Colleges 2. The first thing to be sought therefore is a thorough-going appreciation on the part of the student of the attractiveness, the scope, and importance of animals and their activities. 3. A first course should really be a foundation course, and as such should give the student a broad and catholic view of the whole subject. It should utilize all the main departments of Zoology, because each department contains matter which should be familiar to all persons of ordinary education. Furthermore, the departments of morphology, physiology, ecology, distribution, and classification furnish exercises which have distinct, and yet complementary, pedagogical value. Any single phase of the subject, however important or interesting, gives a false and therefore an unscientific view of the wonderful science of Zoology, unless it is supplemented by the others. Therefore a book, if it is to serve the pedagogical needs of beginners, should contain fairly representative matter from all the main departments of the science; and it should at the same time provide both for the descriptive work and for the practical work in the field and laboratory. 4. Laboratory work and field work are essential, both to proper interest and to proper results, and should not be merely illustrative of text or lecture work, but as far as possible should be the foundation and point of departure of the lectures and the text. No instrumentality open to the teacher is better than the laboratory as a means of securing real interest and mental growth for the pupils. However, in order to attain this end it is essential that this work shall really be vitally done. It is not enough that a pupil be induced to observe and to record his observations. The pupil's mind should always be encouraged to "follow through" to whatever response in the way of conclusion or explanation seems sound in the light of his knowledge at the time.
