Book excerpt: What do all undead have in common...across all genres and stories? The obvious answer is they are dead. It’s just how they became zombies that varies. Zombies are also gruesome, bloodthirsty killing machines, even if some of these machines are more efficient than others. Another commonality is that all undead have an insatiable appetite for human flesh, even if this flesh does them no good and most of it just falls out of their mouths or assorted holes in their bodies. Further, all undead are in various states of decay or damage. But, whether bloodied, broken, or rotting, the undead’s rates of movement (and attack) are not consistent. But, beyond these superficial traits, what else do zombies have in common? What else makes a zombie a zombie? The answer you need to know is this.... All zombies, no matter the genre or source, never, ever stop. Despite all reason, despite all laws to the contrary, zombies never quit or tire. What would a world with zombies be like, a world where the undead’s drive to eat and kill could never be slaked and their motion never stopped? Perhaps this world would be a utopia. And not just for the zombies. Zombies Forever is a short story of roughly five thousand words.

Book The Six Pillars of Calculus Business Edition

Download or read book The Six Pillars of Calculus Business Edition written by Lorenzo Sadun and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Six Pillars of Calculus: Business Edition is a conceptual and practical introduction to differential and integral calculus for use in a one- or two-semester course. By boiling calculus down to six common-sense ideas, the text invites students to make calculus an integral part of how they view the world. Each pillar is introduced by tackling and solving a challenging, realistic problem. This engaging process of discovery encourages students to wrestle with the material and understand the reasoning behind the techniques they are learning—to focus on when and why to use the tools of calculus, not just on how to apply formulas. Modeling and differential equations are front and center. Solutions begin with numerical approximations; derivatives and integrals emerge naturally as refinements of those approximations. Students use and modify computer programs to reinforce their understanding of each algorithm. The Business Edition of the Six Pillars series has been extensively field-tested at the University of Texas. It features hundreds of examples and problems designed specifically for business students. The core ideas are introduced by modeling market penetration of a new product, tracking changes in the national debt, and maximizing the profit of a business. Along the way, students learn about present value, consumer and producer surplus, amortization, and probability.

Book Zombie Highway Resurrected

Download or read book Zombie Highway Resurrected written by Jeffrey J. Hoy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The zombie apocalypse had done a horrific number on the world a few years earlier, but somehow the state of Montana had come through better than most places in what had once been America. They had a working electrical grid, were able to manufacture diesel fuel, and had a passable government protected by a mostly green National Guard. Sure, there were still dead heads stumbling about, but not anything like what filled the huge urban areas. Up in GOB (Good Ol Boy) land, the survivors had cobbled together a semblance of what most had lost. Ted, a verbose ex-Gulf War veteran, worked for Zombie Express, the main trucking company that was helping stitch together the widespread groups of survivors. He left most of the driving to his partner, a fortyish black woman who furtively referred to him as the Old White Dude. They had a professional respect for each otherof sorts. Having been of roughly retirement age in the world of before, Teds attitude with her was a bit dated, and she did not appreciate all the sexual innuendos. All in all, they did their best to survive the aftermath of the apocalypse . . . and each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the current moment—polarized populations, increasing climate fears, and decline of supranational institutions in favor of a rising tide of nationalisms—it is easy to understand the proliferation of apocalyptic and dystopian elements in popular culture. Infected Empires examines one of the most popular figures in contemporary apocalyptic film: the zombie. This harbinger of apocalypse reveals bloody truths about the human condition, the wounds of history, and methods of contending with them. Infected Empires considers parallels in the zombie genre to historical and current events on different political, theological and philosophical levels, and proposes that the zombie can be read as a figure of decolonization and an allegory of resistance to oppressive structures that racialize, marginalize, disable, and dispose of bodies. Studying films from around the world, including Latin America, Asia, Africa, the US, and Europe, Infected Empires presents a vision of a global zombie that points toward a posthuman and feminist future.

Book The Afterlife in Popular Culture

Download or read book The Afterlife in Popular Culture written by Kevin O'Neill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Afterlife in Popular Culture: Heaven, Hell, and the Underworld in the American Imagination gives students a fresh look at how Americans view the afterlife, helping readers understand how it's depicted in popular culture. What happens to us when we die? The book seeks to explore how that question has been answered in American popular culture. It begins with five framing essays that provide historical and intellectual background on ideas about the afterlife in Western culture. These essays are followed by more than 100 entries, each focusing on specific cultural products or authors that feature the afterlife front and center. Entry topics include novels, film, television shows, plays, works of nonfiction, graphic novels, and more, all of which address some aspect of what may await us after our passing. This book is unique in marrying a historical overview of the afterlife with detailed analyses of particular cultural products, such as films and novels. In addition, it covers these topics in nonspecialist language, written with a student audience in mind. The book provides historical context for contemporary depictions of the afterlife addressed in the entries, which deal specifically with work produced in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel that uses calculus to help you survive a zombie apocalypse How can calculus help you survive the zombie apocalypse? Colin Adams, humor columnist for the Mathematical Intelligencer and one of today's most outlandish and entertaining popular math writers, demonstrates how in this zombie adventure novel. Zombies and Calculus is the account of Craig Williams, a math professor at a small liberal arts college in New England, who, in the middle of a calculus class, finds himself suddenly confronted by a late-arriving student whose hunger is not for knowledge. As the zombie virus spreads and civilization crumbles, Williams uses calculus to help his small band of survivors defeat the hordes of the undead. Along the way, readers learn how to avoid being eaten by taking advantage of the fact that zombies always point their tangent vector toward their target, and how to use exponential growth to determine the rate at which the virus is spreading. Williams also covers topics such as logistic growth, gravitational acceleration, predator-prey models, pursuit problems, the physics of combat, and more. With the aid of his story, you too can survive the zombie onslaught. Featuring easy-to-use appendixes that explain the book's mathematics in greater detail, Zombies and Calculus is suitable both for those who have only recently gotten the calculus bug, as well as for those whose disease has advanced to the multivariable stage.
