Download or read book Lexicon of Jewish Names in Late Antiquity Palestine 200 650 written by Ṭal Ilan and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2002 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this lexicon Tal Ilan collects all the information on names of Jews in Palestine and the people who bore them between 330 BCE, a date which marks the Hellenistic conquest of Palestine, and 200 CE, the date usually assigned to the close of the mishnaic period, and the early Roman Empire. Thereby she includes names from literary sources as well as those found in epigraphic and papyrological documents. Tal Ilan discusses the provenance of the names and explains them etymologically, given the many possible sources of influence for the names at that time." "In addition she shows the division between the use of biblical names and the use of Greek and other foreign names. She analyzes the identity of the persons and the choice of name and points out the most popular names at the time. The lexicon is accompanied by a lengthy and comprehensive introduction that scrutinizes the main trends in name giving current at the time." --Book Jacket.

Download or read book The Menorah Evolving into the Most Important Jewish Symbol written by Rachel Hachlili and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Menorah, the ancient seven-armed candelabrum, was the most important Jewish symbol both in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora. The menorah was the most important of the Temple vessels and it also came to symbolize Judaism, when it was necessary to distinguish synagogues and Jewish tombs from Christian or pagan structures. This book is a continuation of Hachlili's earlier comprehensive study, The Menorah, the Ancient Seven-armed Candelabrum: Origin, Form and Significance. Brill, 2001. It entails the compilation and study of the material of the past two decades, presenting the theme of the menorah, focusing on its development, form, meaning, significance, and symbolism in antiquity.

Book excerpt: The town of Canby is located in the North Willamette Valley, in Clackamas County, Oregon. By 1838, James Baker, one of the earliest European settlers in Oregon, came to Canby with a cattle drive from California. Soon, he and other settlers were farming on the rich soil. Joseph Knight and four sons moved to the area in 1868. They were active in early Canby development, starting many local businesses and setting the framework for a future town. Maj. Gen. Edward R.S. Canby, hero of the Civil and Indian Wars, had arrived in Oregon in February 1893 to take up command of the US Army's Department of the Columbia. The new town was given this brave man's name by his good friend Ben Holladay, chief of the Oregon & California Railroad. Canby was incorporated on February 15, 1893, making it the second-oldest city in Clackamas County.

Download or read book Haunted Tuscarawas County written by Debra Robinson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tuscarawas County's history stretches back to the pioneer era. Some history, however, refuses to remain in the past. Towns and sites founded in the 1700s and 1800s, like Zoar, Schoenbrunn and Dennison Depot, abound with legends and spectral encounters. Helpful haunts reside at the Little Theatre and Dover Public Library. The sad specter of poor axe-murdered Mary Seneff rises from the Red Hill bridge over little Sugarcreek. And Newcomerstown's young post boy, William Cartmill, still tries to deliver his mail. Author Debra Robinson delves into the area's ghost tales and the history behind them.
