Book Zinc Electrode Kinetics Research

Download or read book Zinc Electrode Kinetics Research written by T. P. Dirkse and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-to-passivation studies have been made on the zinc electrode in a range of KOH solutions. The time range was milliseconds and seconds. Attempts to interpret these results in terms of the rate at which the charge transfer product dissolves in the electrolyte encounter theoretical difficulties. Even at low times-to-passivation, the electrode process appears to be under diffusion control indicating that the rate of dissolution of the charge transfer product is not a limiting factor. Limiting diffusion currents have been measured in 1 to 13.4 M KOH and over a temperature range of -33 to 44C. The diffusion coefficients of the zinate ion have been measured polarographically in 1 to 10 M KOH and over a temperature range of -30 to 45C. (Author).

Book Kinetic Study of the Zinc Electrode by Modified Pulse Techniques and Concentration Gradients

Download or read book Kinetic Study of the Zinc Electrode by Modified Pulse Techniques and Concentration Gradients written by Paul L. Howard and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of studying the zinc electrode with zinc reference electrodes at top and bottom of the electrode has given much insight to the differences in reaction products and rates taking place over the surface. It appears that the concentration gradient is developed in the surface layer and this is where the problem of eroding away the top of the electrode must be attacked. The products formed at the zinc surface appear to be zinc hydrated complexes of the type Zn(H2O)x(OH)y where (x)may 1 to 6 and(y) may be 1 to 5. As an additional check on the reaction products formed electrochemically a polarographic study, differential thermal analysis and a method of checking the double layer capacitance was carried out. Book Battery Zinc Electrode Kinetics Investigation

Download or read book Battery Zinc Electrode Kinetics Investigation written by T. P. Dirkse and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Batteries using a zinc anode and an alkaline electrolyte offer much promise in terms of desirable energy density factors. However, sometimes when the electrode is charged, the zinc often deposits in the form of dendrites which may form metallic bridges between plates and lead to internal shorting of the cell. In order to gain an understanding of the kinetics of this problem, the exchange current densities of the zinc electrode in KOH solutions were measured over a temperature range of -33 to +55C in 1 to 14 molar KOH. Galvanostatic, double impulse, and potentiostatic methods were used. A current inversion appears to be related to the concentration of unbound water in the electrolyte. This matter is discussed in connection with measurements made in solutions of controlled ionic strength.

Book Corrosion and Electrochemistry of Zinc

Download or read book Corrosion and Electrochemistry of Zinc written by Xiaoge Gregory Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humankind's use of zinc stretches back to antiquity, and it was a component in some of the earliest known alloy systems. Even though metallic zinc was not "discovered" in Europe until 1746 (by Marggral), zinc ores were used for making brass in biblical times, and an 87% zinc alloy was found in prehistoric ruins in Transylvania. Also, zinc (the metal) was produced in quantity in India as far back as the thirteenth century, well before it was recognized as being a separate element. The uses of zinc are manifold, ranging from galvanizing to die castings to electronics. It is a preferred anode material in high-energy-density batteries (e.g., Ni/Zn, Ag/Zn, ZnJair), so that its electrochemistry, particularly in alkaline media, has been extensively explored. In the passive state, zinc is photoelectrochemically active, with the passive film displaying n-type characteristics. For the same reason that zinc is considered to be an excellent battery anode, it has found extensive use as a sacrificial anode for the protection of ships and pipelines from corrosion. Indeed, aside from zinc's well-known attributes as an alloying element, its widespread use is principally due to its electrochemical properties, which include a well-placed position in the galvanic series for protecting iron and steel in natural aqueous environments and its reversible dissolution behavior in alkaline solutions.

Book The Zinc Bromine Flow Battery

Download or read book The Zinc Bromine Flow Battery written by Gobinath Pillai Rajarathnam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed technical overview of short- and long-term materials and design challenges to zinc/bromine flow battery advancement, the need for energy storage in the electrical grid and how these may be met with the Zn/Br system. Practical interdisciplinary pathways forward are identified via cross-comparison and comprehensive review of significant findings from more than 300 published works, with clear in-depth explanations spanning initial RFB development to state-of-the-art research in related systems. Promising strategies described include the use of modern electrochemical techniques to study and optimize physical processes occurring within the system during operation, improving zinc electroplating quality during the charge phase through the strategic use of organic additives, as well as identifying suitable catalysts to optimize the bromine/bromide redox couple. The primary focus is on research and development of novel materials in the areas of electrolyte formulation and multifunctional “smart” electrode surfaces to achieve a higher degree of control over processes at the electrode–electrolyte interface. The strategies suggested in this book are also highly adaptable for use in other similar flow battery systems, while the unique cross-comparative approach makes it a useful reference and source of new ideas for both new and established researchers in the field of energy storage and battery technology.
