Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Befriended by the mysterious Zenji who could control the very elements of nature and space, and made living on the planet Tarr possible, Kyrell Ortrok had read every story he could find about the 300-year war that had been started by one of their own. Holding command over 30 three-headed dragons known as ShinDarKynon, Xan'thix had nearly killed them all before finally being defeated and sent into the Great Void. As for mankind however, his warring ways continued, until the children of the Ancient Ones could no longer stand by without trying to help. Leaving their sanctuaries, they gradually befriended the people and became mediators to the different rulers and eventually established the Tournament of Peace. But in the dreaded Swamps of Antor, Xan'thix last living heir, Ras'hi, wanted only revenge. Able to command fire and stone, her powers were great, but she alone was not enough. But then, just when she might have given up, she learned of a legendary jewel known as the Dragon's Eye. By itself it was nothing more than a sparkling green jewel, but when prepared and placed above a specially designed Pit of Souls, it would make her the most powerful being on Tarr. Unaware of such plans for revenge and conquest however, neither Kyrell Ortrok who, along with his friend, Oryan De Hovak, had just arrived in the seaport of Alona for the next great Tournament, had any way of knowing that the very fate of their world would soon rest in their hands.

The result is a remarkable account of a journey both physical and spiritual, as the arduous climb yields to Matthiessen a deepening Buddhist understanding of reality, suffering, impermanence, and beauty.

Download or read book The Power of Denial written by Bernard Faure and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innumerable studies have appeared in recent decades about practically every aspect of women's lives in Western societies. The few such works on Buddhism have been quite limited in scope. In The Power of Denial, Bernard Faure takes an important step toward redressing this situation by boldly asking: does Buddhism offer women liberation or limitation? Continuing the innovative exploration of sexuality in Buddhism he began in The Red Thread, here he moves from his earlier focus on male monastic sexuality to Buddhist conceptions of women and constructions of gender. Faure argues that Buddhism is neither as sexist nor as egalitarian as is usually thought. Above all, he asserts, the study of Buddhism through the gender lens leads us to question what we uncritically call Buddhism, in the singular. Faure challenges the conventional view that the history of women in Buddhism is a linear narrative of progress from oppression to liberation. Examining Buddhist discourse on gender in traditions such as that of Japan, he shows that patriarchy--indeed, misogyny--has long been central to Buddhism. But women were not always silent, passive victims. Faure points to the central role not only of nuns and mothers (and wives) of monks but of female mediums and courtesans, whose colorful relations with Buddhist monks he considers in particular. Ultimately, Faure concludes that while Buddhism is, in practice, relentlessly misogynist, as far as misogynist discourses go it is one of the most flexible and open to contradiction. And, he suggests, unyielding in-depth examination can help revitalize Buddhism's deeper, more ancient egalitarianism and thus subvert its existing gender hierarchy. This groundbreaking book offers a fresh, comprehensive understanding of what Buddhism has to say about gender, and of what this really says about Buddhism, singular or plural.

Book A History of Religion East and West

Download or read book A History of Religion East and West written by Trevor Ling and published by Springer. This book was released on 1969-01-15 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religious traditions of Asia and Europe, the 'East' and 'West' of the title, are sometimes regarded as being in sharp contrast with each other, the one 'mystical', the other 'prophetic'. Whenever their religions are not so contrasted they are usually treated in isolation from each other: the religion of Israel, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Dr Ling, however, stresses that there is considerable overlap and interpenetration between the two types and areas, and that it is important to see the historical inter-relation between these religions and to observe how, during given periods of history, there are parallel developments or significant divergences. He covers the period 1500 B.C. to the present time, providing an outline of the development of Asian and European religious traditions and institutions, and discussing the social and economic factors involved in the development of religous traditions, although he shows that such factors alone do not account for the religious life of man. Dr Ling goes on to interpret the contemporary significance of these religions and their potential for the future life of humanity. He suggests that the present stage of religious advance is characterised by open-endedness towards the future; not all religions exhibit this character, but none has yet exhausted the possibilities of development. This book is intended for use an an introduction to the study of religion. Although reference is made in the text to sources of further information, the book can be used without reference to them.

Book The Bantu Jareer Somalis

Download or read book The Bantu Jareer Somalis written by Mohamed A. Eno and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somalia is generally thought of as a homogenous society, with a common Arabic ancestry, a shared culture of nomadism and one Somali mother tongue. This study challenges this myth. Using the Jareer/Bantu as a case study, the book shows how the Negroid physical features of this ethnic group has become the basis for ethnic marginalization, stigma, social exclusion and apartheid in Somalia. The book is another contribution to the recent deconstruction of the perceived Somali homogeneity and self-same assertions. It argues that the Somalis, just like most societies, employ multiple levels of social and ethnic distinctions, one of which is the Jareer versus Jileec divide. Dr. Eno successfully portrays another Somalia, in which a mythical homogeneity masks the oppression and social exclusion suffered by some ethnic groups in the country.

Book Two Or Three Things I m Dying to Tell You

Download or read book Two Or Three Things I m Dying to Tell You written by Jalal Toufic and published by Post Apollo Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Writing. "What was Orpheus dying to tell his wife, Eurydice? What was Judy dying to tell her beloved, Scottie, in Hitchcock's Vertigo? What were the previous one-night wives of King Shahrayar dying to tell Shahrazad? What was the Christian God "dying" to tell us? What were the faces of the candidates in the 2000 parliamentary election in Lebanon "dying" to tell voters and nonvoters alike? While writing (Vampires): An Uneasy Essay on the Undead in Film and Undying Love, or Love Dies, I, a mortal to death, was dying to tell these books' readers and myself about diegetic silence-over, which produces a dead stop and reveals the occasional natural immobilization of the living as merely a variety of movement; and an unreality that sometimes behaves in a filmic manner, inducing the undead to wonder: "Am I in a film?"; as well as a significant number of other anomalies"--Jalal Toufic. "Resurrection through simulation-an end time fantasy in real time. The graves open...the dead walk...Toufic is a sort of postructuralist spiritualist, a critical medium for the peculiar specters that haunt the society of the spectacle." Ben Lerner "Jalal Toufic is an amazing writer. He documents the moves of consciousness in a way that leads the reader ever deeper, from impasse to illusion to new impasse turning the trap of what can't be named' into a true paradise." Richard Forema"

Book excerpt: Author of (Vampires): An Uneasy Essay on the Undead in Film and Distracted, Lebanese-born writer, film theorist, and video artist Jalal Toufic writes works that embrace the whole activity of his mind, from his daily encounters with life to brilliant concepts that often cut across film, visual art, dance, literature, and theater. Writing about the withdrawal of tradition past a surpassing disaster, the voice-over-witness in relation to traumatic events, the eruption of unworldly entities in radical closures, Toufic takes the reader of his new book through an intellectual landscape that is akin to running across hot coals.

Book Undying Love Or Love Dies

Download or read book Undying Love Or Love Dies written by Jalal Toufic and published by Post Apollo Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoir. Essay. The latest book from an original writer, thinker and filmmaker whose other books (also available from SPD) have attracted a considerable following. "This, Jalal Toufic's fifth book, can be read as a single aphorism, an aphorism composed of aphorisms. And although it is the shortest of his books to date, it is the greatest. Under love's rubric, themes from Toufic's earlier books reappear - memory, the untimely occurrence, the undead of history and their recurrence in film, the hyperrealities of oblivion, ruination. The book is set in contexts (and particularly that of the Arab World) in which not time but other faster forces are bringing about an end to things. There is, in my opinion, no more subtle or powerful thinker today than Jalal Toufic, and none whose ideas are, in the end, more beautiful" - Lyn Hejinian.
