Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen and the Art of Jiu Jitsu - The 30 Day Program to Improve Your Jiu Jitsu Game 1000% Are you Stuck? Struggle. That's the word that comes to mind when I think about the transition from blue belt to purple belt. For reasons that I can't quite work out, when I came to the later stages of being a blue belt I felt confused and lost in my game. Trying to put all the pieces together seemed like a task too far and quitting looked like an option, after all, most guys my age are hitting the golf course or surfing not rolling on the floor with sweat soaked people. This quitting idea seemed an option at least. In an effort to review what I was doing and pushing through this plateau I developed a few habits that not only brought about a huge change in my game but by applying them on a consistent basis turned me into a respected player in my academy. From obscurity to recognition, even from Black belts, and it only took me one month! This is a great manual for anyone interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Grappling.

Book Zen Jiu Jitsu Training Log

Download or read book Zen Jiu Jitsu Training Log written by Oliver Staark and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping track of your progress is paramount if you plan to improve in your jiu jitsu game. Most high level Black Belts and World Champions know that if you improve your technique by only 1% each day then the compounding effect will make you proficient in the gentle art at a very high level. Keeping a series of techniques in your head is a complex matter. This is human chess after all, for every attack there is a defense for every sweep, takedown, pass, submission there is a counter...and counter to that counter. It makes much more sense to keep taking notes than trying to remember what you did, even if you just did it. How many times do you get to the next class after practicing a sweep and you can't remember the vaguest detail! Also, when you review, as you should periodically, some techniques you will identify as being easy to perform and fit your body-type better. These techniques I put a checkmark in the corner of my journal and come back to drill some more. The techniques that present a challenge should have an X in the corner of the page, meaning you need to revisit this in more detail maybe with your professor or coach. This art form is a process yet it is system driven. One thing leads logically to another. It's position-transition-submission. The logic, though, is lightning in a bottle. It needs to be grasped and placed into the correct place in the puzzle or the puzzle will not unlock. Remember how a technique was working really well and you were catching everyone or passing guards, then a couple of weeks later it stopped working?? What happened? Probably, a detail you were applying has now been forgotten. Wouldn't it be great if you could go back and retrieve that detail, well, now you can with the Zen Jiu Jitsu Training Log.

Book excerpt: A classic story of one man's confrontation with the self through Karate. In 1962 at age twenty-two, C. W. Nicol left Wales to study Karate in Japan. He quickly found that the study of the martial art engaged his whole being and transformed his outlook on life. Moving Zen is the multifaceted story of a young man who arrived in Japan to study the technique of, and spirit behind, Karate. Joining the Japan Karate Association, or Shotokan, Nicol discovered that Karate, while extremely violent, also called for politeness and a sense of mutual trust and responsibility. He learned that the stronger the Karateka, the more inclined he was to be gentle with others. Those who have gained a measure of skill but have not yet achieved spiritual maturity are the dangerous practitioners. Studying kata, Nicol came to realize that these forms are, in essence, moving Zen and that the ultimate goal of all the martial arts is tranquility. Through the help of many gifted teachers, C. W. Nicol gained his black belt, and moved progressively closer to his goal of tranquility. His story, Moving Zen, was first published in 1975 and has achieved the status of a modern classic.

Book Breathe

Download or read book Breathe written by Rickson Gracie and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** Instant New York Times bestseller *** *** USA Today bestseller *** *** Wall Street Journal bestseller *** From legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA master Rickson Gracie comes a riveting, insightful memoir that weaves together the story of Gracie’s stunning career with the larger history of the Gracie family dynasty and the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, showing how the connection between mind and body can be harnessed for success both inside and outside the ring. Undefeated from the late 1970s through his final fight in the Tokyo Dome in 2000, Rickson Gracie amassed hundreds of victories in the street, on the mat, at the beach, and in the ring. He has joined the pantheon that includes Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and Jackie Chan as one of the most famous martial artists of the twentieth century. Jiu-Jitsu, the fighting style developed and pioneered by his family, has become one of the world’s most prominent martial arts, and Vale Tudo, the “anything goes” style of Brazilian street fighting over which the Gracies had a monopoly, was an early precursor to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Simply put, without the Gracie family, there would be no sport of “MMA,” no 4-billion-dollar UFC empire, and no “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu” at strip malls all across America. In Breathe, for the first time, Rickson reveals the full story of how his father and uncles came to develop Jiu-Jitsu, what it was like to grow up among several generations of world-renowned fighters from the Gracie clan, and the principles and skills that guided him to his undefeated record. From learning to assert himself on the streets of Rio to gaining fame and honor in Japan and emerging through heartbreaking tragedy, the martial arts master shares tales of overcoming challenges, extolling universal virtues and showing readers how pride and ego are the enemies of success. With never-before-seen photos and profound insights into the sport and way of life that only a studied legend can provide, Breathe is an entertaining and magnified view of an enduring legacy as well as an inspiring tale of weathering life’s complexities and overcoming them with style and grace.

Download or read book Roll Strong er written by Eric J Falstrault and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You have become a fanatic of BJJ, but can't seem to get your cardio up to par? You have small nagging pains that you can't seem to get rid of? You are looking into competing but you want to drop a weight class to better your chances? You just want to get fitter and stronger and enjoy every classes as much as possible? Here is your personal plan to gain all the physical abilities that Brazilian jiujitsu requires, and mostly, to help you enjoy rolling without all the little injuries that might be coming your way, if not already well established. This guide was specifically designed, to help the true beginners all the way through the black belts and beyond. It will improve your game, and even, prolong your rolling career for as long as possible. The thing is that you've probably heard that strength is your enemy in JITS, that having too much muscle mass can even impair your game and technique, make you less flexible when you need it the most. Those are very ignorant statements when it comes to sports, even more, when it comes to self-defense as if there will only be challenges you can overtake. All you need to know for now is that for this sport, you need a mix of relative strength, functional hypertrophy and at times, muscular endurance. In BJJ, lifting should be considered a plus, as injury prevention and to help gain speed, stamina and yes, strength. You'll need it when you will be in the absolute division of your next competition. You'll need it when facing much bigger opponents. You'll need it when you'll be facing opponents that have more experience than you, just to survive and hold off chokes and arm bars. You'll need it more often just to survive. But most of all, if you are a BJJ junkie, an addict, you'll probably want to roll for as long as life can let you.You probably want that black belt as much as anybody does. To achieve that, you'll need a lot of guts and glory, with the body that follows. You need to be strong, healthy and wise. A healthy body, a strong mind. The longer you can maintain a good set of muscles, the better and longer you'll be in this game. What you will need is great habits, a good nutrition plan and a personalized strength training program to add to the mix. The information included in this book will be your personalized guide to roll stronger and achieve the ultimate black belt goal.

Book Hidden in Plain Sight

Download or read book Hidden in Plain Sight written by Ellis Amdur and published by Freelance Academy Press. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellis Amdur's writing on martial arts has been groundbreaking. In Dueling with O-sensei, he challenged practitioners that the moral dimension of martial arts is expressed in acts of integrity, not spiritual platitudes and the deification of fantasized warrior-sages. In Old School, he applied both academic rigor and keen observation towards some of the classical martial arts of Japan, leavening his writing with vivid descriptions of many of the actual practitioners of these wonderful traditions. His first edition of Hidden in Plain Sight was a discussion of esoteric training methods once common, but now all but lost within Japanese martial arts. These methodologies encompassed mental imagery, breath-work, and a variety of physical techniques, offering the potential to develop skills and power sometimes viewed as nearly superhuman. Usually believed to be the provenance of Chinese martial arts, Amdur asserted that elements of such training still remain within a few martial traditions: literally, 'hidden in plain sight.' Two-thirds larger, this second edition is so much more. Amdur digs deep into the past, showing the complexity of human strength, its adaptation to varying lifestyles, and the nature of physical culture pursued for martial ends. Amdur goes into detail concerning varieties of esoteric power training within martial arts, culminating in a specific methodology known as 'six connections' or 'internal strength.' With this discussion as a baseline, he then discusses the transfer of esoteric power training from China to various Japanese jujutsu systems as well as Japanese swordsman-ship emanating from the Kurama traditions. Finally, he delves into the innovative martial tradition of Daito-ryu and its most important offshoot, aikido, showing how the mercurial, complicated figures of Takeda Sokaku and Morihei Ueshiba were less the embodiment of something new, than a re-imagining of their past.
