Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fathering Your Father is indubitably an important, timely work. In this incisive re-reading of the sources for the early history of Chinese Chan Buddhism, Cole conveys a new understanding of material familiar to scholars that might well make students engage with these sources more imaginatively. Hitherto scholars have pored over the five or six key sources; now we are invited to read them as successive literary inventions. In short, this study has no competition and is bound to provoke debate."—T. H. Barrett, Professor of East Asian History, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and author of The Woman Who Discovered Printing

Book Shots in the Dark

  • Author : Shoji Yamada
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2020-06-24
  • ISBN : 022678424X
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Shots in the Dark written by Shoji Yamada and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-06-24 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years after World War II, Westerners and Japanese alike elevated Zen to the quintessence of spirituality in Japan. Pursuing the sources of Zen as a Japanese ideal, Shoji Yamada uncovers the surprising role of two cultural touchstones: Eugen Herrigel’s Zen in the Art of Archery and the Ryoanji dry-landscape rock garden. Yamada shows how both became facile conduits for exporting and importing Japanese culture. First published in German in 1948 and translated into Japanese in 1956, Herrigel’s book popularized ideas of Zen both in the West and in Japan. Yamada traces the prewar history of Japanese archery, reveals how Herrigel mistakenly came to understand it as a traditional practice, and explains why the Japanese themselves embraced his interpretation as spiritual discipline. Turning to Ryoanji, Yamada argues that this epitome of Zen in fact bears little relation to Buddhism and is best understood in relation to Chinese myth. For much of its modern history, Ryoanji was a weedy, neglected plot; only after its allegorical role in a 1949 Ozu film was it popularly linked to Zen. Westerners have had a part in redefining Ryoanji, but as in the case of archery, Yamada’s interest is primarily in how the Japanese themselves have invested this cultural site with new value through a spurious association with Zen.

STEVEN SVOBODA, ESQUIRE RENDERS FAVORABLE VERDICT FOR FATHERHOOD BOOK BERKELEY, CA. 19 September 2004 He is the Executive Director and Founder of Attorneys for the Rights of the Child, a Board Member and Public Relations Director of the National Coalition of Free Men and a member of The Mens Center Advisory Council. He is J. Steven Svoboda, Esquire. Svoboda, who recently completed his review of In Search Of Fatherhood -- Transcending Boundaries has rendered a favorable verdict. Mr. Svoboda had the following things to say about In Search Of Fatherhood -- Transcending Boundaries which is authored by Diane A. Sears, a member of the University Council for Akamai Universitys Fatherhood and Mens Studies Program and the Managing Editor of a quarterly international male parenting journal IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD FORUM FOR AND ABOUT THE FATHERS OF THE WORLD: BSI International, still a relatively new player in pro-male publishing, has been putting out its IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD Forum For and About the Fathers of the World for well over half a decade. Now BSI has released this fascinating and wide-ranging volume collecting 17 pieces by 16 contributors, all focused in one way or other on the ever-important issue of fatherhood. I personally read it cover to cover on a recent plane flight. Svoboda stated. BSIs publicationsboth its journal and this book--have a unique flavor. For one thing, substantial representation is given to men of color. Its authors vary in literary skill though everything it publishes is engaging and easy to follow. Some of its articles tend to have a somewhat politically reactionary flavor though despite my own personal largely progressive background, I dont view this as a negative factor, Svoboda continued. At the same time, BSIs style is very male in its sensibility: stories are put out there as the authors see them, with no apologies and no punches pulled. Many of BS

Book excerpt: Rad Dad: Dispatches from the Frontiers of Fatherhood combines the best pieces from the award-winning zine Rad Dad and from the blog Daddy Dialectic, two kindred publications that have tried to explore parenting as political territory. Both of these projects have pushed the conversation around fathering beyond the safe, apolitical focus most books and websites stick to; they have not been complacent but have worked hard to create a diverse, multi-faceted space in which to grapple with the complexity of fathering. Today more than ever, fatherhood demands constant improvisation, risk, and struggle. With grace and honesty and strength, Rad Dad’s writers tackle all the issues that other parenting guides are afraid to touch: the brutalities, beauties, and politics of the birth experience, the challenges of parenting on an equal basis with mothers, the tests faced by transgendered and gay fathers, the emotions of sperm donation, and parental confrontations with war, violence, racism, and incarceration. Rad Dad is for every father out in the real world trying to parent in ways that are loving, meaningful, authentic, and ultimately revolutionary. Contributors Include: Steve Almond, Jack Amoureux, Mike Araujo, Mark Andersen, Jeff Chang, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jeff Conant, Sky Cosby, Jason Denzin, Cory Doctorow, Craig Elliott, Chip Gagnon, Keith Hennessy, David L. Hoyt, Simon Knapus, Ian MacKaye, Tomas Moniz, Zappa Montag, Raj Patel, Jeremy Adam Smith, Jason Sperber, Burke Stansbury, Shawn Taylor, Tata, Jeff West, and Mark Whiteley.
