Book excerpt: My name is Robin, an Essex boy at heart, and as things go, I live a good life now on and off in the west of Ireland in a beautiful picturesque place called the Galway bay. There are some people who would have called me and my mates gangsters. Sure we got up to mischief, but it just seemed the right thing to do at the time. We didnt like doing what we did and wanted to get out as soon as we had made enough money. We got into this game by accident in some ways, but then we stayed that far under the radar; we went deeper than a nuclear submarine. Definitely not our interpretation of gangsters. We didnt go around carrying guns, threatening or beating up people, just normal run-of-the-mill guys just trying to earn a few bob and lived by the motto Dont pull, dont push and be lucky. But now having given up all my wild ways, if you would like to call it that, sold some of my share in the business I have and earned enough money just to spend my time doing the things I love in lifea bit of painting, fishing, part-time teaching, and having the odd pint of Guinness, or as they call it here porter. For the past twenty-odd years life just cant get better. So with this in mind, it gives me time to reflect on one particular day twenty-odd years ago in a bookies in Romford, Essex.

I started to think about it as though I were a young child myself ... 'There's a house inside my mummy' was a phrase that just popped into my head, and from then on the book was a joy to write.'

Book Critical Posthumanism and Planetary Futures

Download or read book Critical Posthumanism and Planetary Futures written by Debashish Banerji and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a critical exploration of multiple posthuman possibilities in the 21st century and beyond. Due to the global engagement with advanced technology, we are witness to a species-wise blurring of boundaries at the edge of the human. On the one hand, we find ourselves in a digital age in which human identity is being transformed through networked technological intervention, a large part of our consciousness transferred to "smart" external devices. On the other hand, we are assisted---or assailed---by an unprecedented proliferation of quasi-human substitutes and surrogates, forming a spectrum of humanoids with fuzzy borders. Under these conditions, critical posthumanism asks, who will occupy and control our planet: Will the "superhuman" merely serve as another sign under which new regimes of dominance are spread across the earth? Or can we discover or invent technologies of existence to counter such dominance? It is issues such as these which are at the heart of this new volume of explorations of the posthuman. The essays in this volume offer leading-edge thought on the subject, with special emphases on postmodern and postcolonial futures. They engage with questions of subalternity and feminism vis-à-vis posthumanism, dealing with issues of subjugation, dispensability and surrogacy, as well as the possibilities of resistance, ethical politics or subjective transformation from South Asian archives of cultural and spiritual practice. This volume is a valuable addition to the on-going global dialogues on posthumanism, indispensable to those, from across several disciplines, who are interested in postcolonial and planetary futures.

Book Body Stories

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jill Andrews
  • Publisher : Demeter Press
  • Release : 2020-11-01
  • ISBN : 177258309X
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book Body Stories written by Jill Andrews and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body stories capture a nuanced, interconnected, interactive, and complex telling of our understanding, perception, and experience of and through our bodies. Plenty has been published on body image but image suggests a static fixed body, unmitigated through our social interactions and varying times and spaces. This book is not a "how-to" guide for fat confidence. It's not a compendium of fat suffering. It's simply a collection of narratives about what it's like to survive in a weight-hating world. It resists the ways that marginalized bodies are being written and researched and put into other people's ideas about our existence. The stories in this book are celebratory and are painful. They look at intersections of race and queerness; they destabilize womanhood by presenting a range of possible female embodiments. They explore issues of disability and madness. The full range of possibilities that are collected here give a picture of what it means to live in a society with strong and powerful messages about size, about normalcy, about what a moral and healthy life and body look like. This book is a snapshot of its place and time, but these stories remind us that we're here to stay. The body stories will change but we will keep owning our own narratives. While story, especially written by women, is often seen as outside the academic canon, these stories, these creative offerings, are theory, are research, and are activism. They are nothing less than the blueprint for liberation. Writing about fat and about bodies outside of medicalized narratives, without ignoring the impact of race, sexuality, class, ability, gender, fashion, appearance, and beyond, is radical and rigorous. It is impossible to think about the future without wishing for liberation. Liberation can come in many forms. It can mean an awareness, the ability to confront. The stories in this book display the ways that liberation isn't a finish line or a thing we can complete—rather it is a million small actio

Book The Pile of Stuff at the Bottom of the Stairs

Download or read book The Pile of Stuff at the Bottom of the Stairs written by Christina Hopkinson and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopkinson pens a hilarious and acutely-observed novel about marriage, motherhood, children, and work and readers everywhere will find Mary's trials hilariously familiar as they cheer her on in her efforts to balance home, work, children, and a clean bottom stair! What's the thing you hate most about the one you love? Mary doesn't know whether it's the way he doesn't quite reach the laundry basket when he throws his dirty clothes at it (but doesn't ever walk over and pick them up and put them in), or the balled-up tissues he leaves on the bedside table when he has a cold, or the way he never quite empties the dishwasher, leaving the "difficult" items for her to put away. Is it that because she is "only working part-time" that she is responsible for all of the domestic tasks in the house? Or, is it simply that he puts used teabags in the sink? The mother of two young boys, Mary knows how to get them to behave the way she wants. Now she's designing the spousal equivalent of a star chart and every little thing her husband does wrong will go on it. Though Mary knows you're supposed to reward the good behavior rather than punish the bad, the rules for those in middle age are different than the rules for those not even in middle school...
