Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the 1930s, urban police forces from New York City to Montreal to Vancouver established youth squads and crime prevention programs, dramatically changing the nature of contact between cops and kids. Gone was the beat officer who scared children and threatened youth. Instead, a new breed of officer emerged whose intentions were explicit: befriend the rising generation. Good intentions, however, produced paradoxical results. In Youth Squad Tamara Gene Myers chronicles the development of youth consciousness among North American police departments. Myers shows that a new comprehensive strategy for crime prevention was predicated on the idea that criminals are not born but made by their cultural environments. Pinpointing the origin of this paradigmatic shift to a period of optimism about the ability of police to protect children, she explains how, by the middle of the twentieth century, police forces had intensified their presence in children's lives through juvenile curfew laws, police athletic leagues, traffic safety and anti-corruption campaigns, and school programs. The book describes the ways that seemingly altruistic efforts to integrate working-class youth into society evolved into pervasive supervision and surveillance, normalizing the police presence in children's lives. At the intersection of juvenile justice, policing, and childhood history, Youth Squad reveals how the overpolicing of young people today is rooted in well-meaning but misguided schemes of the mid-twentieth century.

Book Suicide Squad

Download or read book Suicide Squad written by Andrew Porter and published by Milo Books Ltd. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burnley FC fans are famously the most loyal of all: their club claims the biggest support in the country compared to the size of its town. Such fierce commitment has also inspired ferocious - and sometimes misdirected - loyalty. Out of the terrace wars of the 1970s came a gang known as the Suicide Squad - and Andrew `Pot' Porter was one of its leaders. Raised in the shadow of Turf Moor in a northern community of back-to-back terraces, he started watching matches as a cider-swigging ten-year-old and was soon a regular on the famous Long Side, where he saw the exploits of fearless terrace legends like Norman Jones and the crazy Bungalow Bill. Burnley's rollercoaster history- from the old Division One to Division Four and the threat of non-league football - meant the Suicide Squad clashed with just about every rival mob in the country, from minnows like Bury and Wimbledon to giants like Spurs, Celtic, Birmingham and Manchester City, with Pot always in the thick of it. A successful amateur boxer, he was also a regular follower of the England national team, where he witnessed some of the most notorious incidents of modern times. From raucous trips in Transit vans with carrier bags full of beer cans, to sleeping off hangovers in foreign train stations, to fighting with mad German skinheads, Suicide Squad is a gritty, realistic and vivid portrayal of the wild side of British football.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Police officers and metal detectors have become fixtures in American public schools. In this tough-on-crime, security-oriented era, the new gold standard for school discipline has become the criminal justice system. While harsh school punishment has reshaped schools and communities across the socioeconomic divide, nowhere is the overlap between classroom and prison more striking than at the Orleans Parish Prison, the site of a New Orleans public school enrolling primarily poor African American boys expelled under zero-tolerance policies for minor infractions such as tardiness, but not actual criminal behavior. The Prison School examines how and why public schools take a punitive approach to education and analyzes how this criminalizing mode influences a student's approach toward correctional custody. How did schools and prisons--two very different kinds of public institutions--become so intertwined, and what does this combination mean for students, communities, and, ultimately, a democratic society? How do we begin to unravel the ties that bind the racialized realities of mass school failure and mass incarceration? And what does this mean to segments of the population--in particular, African American males--who have been systematically removed from their schools and their society?"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: This book brings theory from popular music studies to an examination of identity and agency in youth films while building on, and complementing, film studies literature concerned with genre, identity, and representation. McNelis includes case studies of Hollywood and independent US youth films that have had commercial and/or critical success to illustrate how films draw on specific discourses surrounding popular music genres to convey ideas about gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and other aspects of identity. He develops the concept of ‘musical agency’, a term he uses to discuss the relationship between film music and character agency, also examining the music characters listen to and discuss, as well as musical performances by the characters themselves
