Children and adolescents who participate in organized sport have a higher level of physical activity later in life and lead healthier lives in their adulthood. Because physical activity in youth is often executed in an organized manner, organized sport's role in society has become increasingly important over the years, not just for the benefit of an individual but for public health. Despite the many benefits of organized sport, these benefits are not always accessible or equitable to all children and adolescents. These disparities in health, well-being, quality of life, and socioeconomic status (SES) inequities can be a cause of the SDOH. Athletic trainers are health care providers that are uniquely positioned in an optimal public health intersection and can provide direct care for their low SES patient population that is impacted by the SDOH. The primary purposes of this dissertation were to 1) further understanding of youth sport participation experiences from low socioeconomic status families to now of Hispanic/Latinx families, 2) quantify perceptions of clinical management decisions toward low SES student athletes in a group of medical providers and public health advocates, and 3) identify challenges and strategies to upholding a standard of care when providing care to low SES patient population in the secondary school setting. Study 1: 12 Hispanic/Latinx parents and their high school aged children participated in this study. Hispanic/Latinx families described expectations of time and money that were exacerbated by the current youth sport culture. These families met the current youth sport expectations by methods rooted in their culture. When expectations were not met, this led to a misalignment of cultures and resulted in a negative youth sport experience. Study 2: A total of 380 secondary school athletic trainers completed the quantitative aim of this study through a cross-sectional survey regarding their perceptions of the SDOH and SES related to providing patient care. 12 ATs participated in the qualitative aim of this study. ATs perceived health and health care as the most relevant determinant when providing care to low SES patients. When ATs further considered the SES of patients, they identified all SDOHs as barriers they were ill equipped to navigate as they delivered care and engaged in patient referral.

The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Factors which play into this inequity in the general population, such as low socioeconomic status and being located in a rural area, also affect access to athletic training services in the high school and secondary school setting. An athletic trainer can provide timely and appropriate medical care to an athlete after experiencing a sports-related injury or illness at no additional cost to the athlete or their family. Having access to athletic trainers generally indicates that a school is better prepared to handle an emergency injury situation before such an injury occurs and that injuries are recognized and treated in a timely and appropriate manner. Methods: A systematic literature review was performed using keywords "athletic trainer", "high school or secondary school", and "disparity or access". Inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed articles, published from 2005-2020 in the English language with a setting of high schools or secondary schools. Exclusion criteria: articles not pertaining to the target population, conference proceedings, duplicate articles. Articles categorized by level of socioecological model to which they pertained. Results: 25 articles were found. Major themes of the articles included general access to athletic trainers (n=11), sports-related concussions (n=9), exertional heat stroke (n=2), and emergency action plans (n=3). Discussion: Access to athletic training services has positive impacts on the implementation of emergency action plans, preparedness for heat illnesses, and recognition and management of sports-related concussions. This set of articles also supports that athletic training services are less likely to be available in lower socioeconomic areas, rural areas, and in private schools. All levels of the socioeconomic model were represented in this search, though with policy level research the most lacking.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Social capital reflects the value of one’s social networks, and the actual and potential benefits – and costs – of relationships. Bringing together a team of kids for a season also brings together their families who all must negotiate this new social world. Within this world, relationships are bound to form, and these are the foundation upon which this project rests. Youth sport scholars have traditionally been interested in questions such as: how many kids play sports, what sports they play, how and why do they start playing and stop playing, and the costs and benefit of participation. However, aside from sensational examples of youth sport parents behaving badly, scholars know far less about the parental experience. This time is meaningful for parents, because parents often spend as much or even more time at the fields than their children. It is thus worth examining what they might get out of this investment. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress.
