Book Youth and Terrorist Activities in Borno State Nigeria

Download or read book Youth and Terrorist Activities in Borno State Nigeria written by Stephen B. Oladipo PhD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book “Youth and Terrorist Activities in Borno State, Nigeria” is a PhD Thesis which dissects the origin of Bokoharam terrorist-sect and its module operandi in Nigeria. It gives an insight into the three (3) major influential factors boosting the sect’s activities. The factors are highlighted to include: socioeconomic condition (poverty), political motivation and religious fanaticism. The Youth remains the subset of vulnerability in all of this and, at the same time, the youth is the same instrument of chaos. In line with its theoretical discourse, the thesis anchors its proven assumptions around the theory of anomie and Cohen’s Sub-Cultural strain theory. With its use of survey method and other qualitative approaches in analyzing information from primary sources such as the direct victims and the captured Bokoharam sect-members; the thesis’ hypotheses are established. The hypotheses are established to confirm youth-exploitation as a result of deepening poverty, politically-driven terrorism and strong fanaticism challenge in Borno and indeed within the Nigerian state at large.

Book excerpt: Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa, made up of multiple ethnic groups, cultures, and languages. She is a nation with world-acclaimed writers, scientists, and physicians who have created record breaking and award-winning contributions to their fields. Sadly, this great and mighty nation is plagued and attacked almost every week by militants from a deadly, brutal, barbarous, vicious, and dangerous sect called Boko Haram. Boko Haram is the most dangerous terrorist group in Nigeria, the actions of which have led to the injury and/or death of many people. This group evolved from a non-violent nuisance group to a brutal, cruel, and savage one. Boko Haram's activities have had and still have negative, destructive, and devastating effects on different aspects of Nigeria's economy. The impact of Boko Haram's terrorism on security, health, finance, tourism, and education in Nigeria and its people is the topic of focus in this book. Furthermore, the Boko Haram sect is a leading group that breaches the rights of children. It is common knowledge that the children are the future of any nation, and they need to be trained properly for a promising future. Ultimately, the individuals or groups breaching the rights of children need to be punished appropriately, for a better and glorious future for the children of Nigeria.

Book Understanding Boko Haram

Download or read book Understanding Boko Haram written by James J. Hentz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this book is to understand the nature of the Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria. Boko Haram’s goal of an Islamic Caliphate, starting in the Borno State in the North East that will eventually cover the areas of the former Kanem-Borno Empire, is a rejection of the modern state system forced on it by the West. The central theme of this volume examines the relationship between the failure of the state-building project in Nigeria and the outbreak and nature of insurgency. At the heart of the Boko Haram phenomenon is a country racked with cleavages, making it hard for Nigeria to cohere as a modern state. Part I introduces this theme and places the Boko Haram insurgency in a historical context. There are, however, multiple cleavages in Nigeria ̶ ethnic, regional, cultural, and religious ̶ and Part II examines the different state-society dynamics fuelling the conflict. Political grievances are common to every society; however, what gives Boko Haram the space to express such grievances through violence? Importantly, this volume demonstrates that the insurgency is, in fact, a reflection of the hollowness within Nigeria’s overall security. Part III looks at the responses to Boko Haram by Nigeria, neighbouring states, and external actors. For Western actors, Boko Haram is seen as part of the "global war on terror" and the fact that it has pledged allegiance to ISIS encourages this framing. However, as the chapters here discuss, this is an over-simplification of Boko Haram and the West needs to address the multiple dimension of Boko Haram. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and political violence, insurgencies, African politics, war and conflict studies, and IR in general.

Book Boko Haram s Terrorism and the Nigerian State

Download or read book Boko Haram s Terrorism and the Nigerian State written by Olumuyiwa Temitope Faluyi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the effectiveness of Nigeria’s counterterrorist policies against Boko Haram. It takes a critical review of the interventionist strategies adopted by the Nigerian government, highlights the motivations behind the choice of strategies, and proffers a deeper understanding of the factors responsible for the state’s inability, thus far, to rid the country of terrorism. Specifically, it evaluates the NACTEST policy framework that guides the Nigerian state’s counterterrorist strategies, which contains both hard and soft power approaches. Adopting historical and case study approaches which put the Nigerian state and occurrences of violent conflict in context, it takes cognizance of the politics of ethno-religious diversity which reinforce violent conflicts among groups and against the state, and reviews the socio-economic and political realities that led to the emergence and sustenance of Boko Haram. The volume concludes by suggesting practical policy options for combating Boko Haram and other similar armed insurrection. This book is appropriate for researchers and students interested in African politics, conflict, security, peace studies, terrorism, and counterterrorism, as well as policy makers and government departments dealing with terrorism and counterterrorism.

Book Ten Years of Boko Haram in Nigeria

Download or read book Ten Years of Boko Haram in Nigeria written by J. Tochukwu Omenma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a contemporary overview of Boko Haram's activities. Since Boko Haram emerged in 2002, media-driven narratives as well as social scientific methodologies have been increasingly applied to draw generalisable conclusions on what goals the groups have pursued, what strategies it has used for these purposes and the counter campaign strategies authorities have pursued. But from 2009 to 2018, Boko Haram has pursued high-intensity violence: assassinations, bombing, kidnappings, beheading or threats of violence, conscriptions and territorial occupation. This makes it imperative to deepen and broaden our understanding of the groups’ activities toward a problem-solving and policy-relevant analysis. Book Overcoming Boko Haram

Download or read book Overcoming Boko Haram written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is now more than a decade since the violent Islamic group Boko Haram launched its reign of terror across northern Nigeria, claiming more than 27,000 lives and displacing over 2 million people. While its territorial gains have largely been recaptured, the insurgency rages on, devastating communities across vast stretches of the north-east and disrupting governance, livelihoods and food security, as well as posing a security risk to Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Less attention is paid to the pervasive popular rejection of violent extremism on the ground. How did a diverse and economically dynamic West African society unravel so violently, and for so long? Why does radicalization have so little influence on large Muslim populations in surrounding areas, such as the Yoruba in south-western Nigeria, or the poor ethnically similar Muslim majority in central Niger just north of the border? This book looks beyond the details of the insurgency to examine the wider social and political processes that explain why Boko Haram emerged when and where it did, and what forces exist within society to contain it. Drawing on the detailed fieldwork of specialist Nigerian and Nigerianist scholars from Nigeria, connecting the worst of Boko Haram violence to the wider realities of the present, the book offers new insights into the drivers of Islamic extremism in Nigeria - poverty, regional inequality, environmental stress, migration, youth unemployment, and state corruption and human rights abuses - with a view to charting more sustainable paths out of the conflict."--Publisher.

This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph counterterrorism expert James Forest assesses the threat Boko Haram poses to Nigeria and U.S. national security interests. As Dr. Forest notes, Boko Haram is largely a local phenomenon, though one with strategic implications, and must be understood and addressed within its local context and the long standing grievances that motivate terrorist activity. Dr. Forest deftly explores Nigeria's ethnic fissures and the role of unequal distribution of power in fueling terrorism. Indeed, these conditions, combined with the ready availability of weapons, contribute to Nigeria's other security challenges including militancy in the Niger Delta and organized crime around the economic center of the country, Lagos.

Download or read book Boko Haram written by Richard Baker Simons and published by Boko Haram & the Agenda of a Failed Nigeria State. This book was released on 2015-04-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world where terrorist groups are forming new alliances to increase their brutal assaults across countries while pursuing their bigger agenda of Caliphates in spaces they conquered and occupied, Boko Haram - An Agenda of a Failed Nigeria State examines the origin of the Jihadist group that since 2009 has terrorized Northeast Nigeria and has left more than 13, 000 Nigerians and foreign workers dead. Boko Haram was founded in 2002 by Mohammed Yusuf. Boko Haram's name means "Western Education is Evil" in the Hausa language spoken in Maiduguri, Northeastern Nigeria where the terrorist group has its headquarters. Since taking over the leadership of Boko Haram, Yusuf's successor Abubakar Shekua has extended its radicalism and terrorism beyond any violence Nigeria has witnessed since its civil war in 1967. It has attacked Christian churches, mosques motor parks, entertainment centers, soccer viewing centers, police posts, military barracks, and government offices. It has also attacked the heart of the capital city Abuja, Lagos and the United Nations building. On April 14, 2014, the world woke up to the sad news that more than 300 schools girls were abducted from their dormitory at the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Maiduguri in Northern Nigeria. While the girls are yet to be found, Boko Haram has since abducted more than 500 women and children from the same location. As Boko Haram fled its occupied territories, Nigeria military joined forces with Niger, Chad, and Cameroun soldiers to rout the terrorist group from their hideouts in Sambisa forests and discovered that they slaughtered some of the captured women. While Boko Haram has intensified its assaults, its allegiance with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIA) is unquestionable. Its repeated beheadings of their victims and its sophisticated use of social media like ISIS are indications that the group still poses a serious threat, not just to Nigeria, but to the global community. As a reminder, this book was put together before Nigeria's presidential election that witnessed the change in leadership from President Jonathan Goodluck to General Mohammadu Buhari. This book reveals that Nigeria/s historical, political and religious landscape that brought about Boko Haram is not likely to change with new political leadership. Boko Haram wants to carve out a separate Islamic state in Nigeria and the election of General Buhari, a Muslim from the North will not likely change Boko Haram's agenda of a Nigeria's failed State now or in the future. Change in regime in Nigeria will not stop Haram from pursuing its goal - especially as it has political and financial support within Nigeria's religious and political elite - mainly from the North. General Buhari winning the presidential election may facilitate Nigeria's instability because any failed attempt by Mohammadu Buhari to meet his political promises of fighting and stamping out Boko Haram may support the allegation by his political opponents that he (General Buhari) was a staunch supporter of the terrorist group. This becomes more of a serious concern as he is a Muslim, and Boko Haram - who reports indicate have supporters in government from the North - still has its intact agenda of creating a Caliphate in Nigeria.
