Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, for Young People Cornwall), to Obtain a supply of tin. They made no settlements, nor did they leave any account of what they saw there, SO we may pass on at once to the invasion by Julius Caesar, which took place 55 B. C. The Britons whom Caesar attacked were fierce and warlike savages, using javelins and arrows when they fought, as well as Shields to defend themselves. They had, besides, a kind of blunt sword, which does not seem to have done much harm. They rode furiously to battle in chariots with sharp scythes sticking out on either side, managing their well-trained little horses with wonderful skill. In Winter they dressed themselves in the skins of animals in summer, when Caesar first saw them, they painted or tattooed their bodies with the blue juice of a plant called woad, which must have been somewhat like indigo. They had learned so much of civilized ways as to make rough, round houses of sticks and clay, with a hole at the top to let out the smoke; and those who lived near the sea-shore had little boats called coracles, made of basket-work covered with leather. Book A People s History of the United States

Download or read book A People s History of the United States written by Howard Zinn and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2003-02-04 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools -- with its emphasis on great men in high places -- to focus on the street, the home, and the, workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles -- the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality -- were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States, which was nominated for the American Book Award in 1981, features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. Revised, updated, and featuring a new after, word by the author, this special twentieth anniversary edition continues Zinn's important contribution to a complete and balanced understanding of American history.

Book Young People s History of Ireland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Young People s History of Ireland Classic Reprint written by George M Towle and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young People's History of Ireland Nothing could better illustrate the deplorable relations of England and Ireland, than the complete absence of Irish history from both English and Irish schools and public libraries. So far as English power could reach, Irish history has been obliterated, misrepresented, or left unwritten. The English story of Ireland would not bear telling, and it must not be told. If the Irish nation were an unimportant, uninteresting, unrelated element, the students of English, except the Irish themselves, might be excused for ignoring it. But this is far from being the case. In the unbroken lines of nationalities, there are few, if any, longer than that of Ireland. By ethnology, philology, geography, history, by the beauty and wealth of the country, and the sentiment and character of its people, Ireland must be ranked with the best-defined nationalities. To justify her oppression, England has resorted to a system of misrepresentation and misreport. Irish antiquities have been doubted and belittled. The natural resources of the land have been left unused, and have been underrated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Short History of England for Young People written by E. S. Kirkland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, for Young People The earliest name for the country now called England was Albion, which we find in the works of Greek writers more than three hundred years before Christ. When the Romans went there it bore the name of Britain, and as such it was known for many centuries. Then it gradually became Angle-land, or England; and in modern times the inhabitants have given to the whole island, including England, Scotland, and Wales, the name of Great Britain. There are many stories told about the Britons, going back as far as eight or nine centuries before Christ; and although there is reason to think that these stories were invented by writers who lived long afterward, and that we really know nothing about the old Britons, yet it is well to know something of the fables. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Arthur's History of England Though I have not the happiness to be a mother, my love of children has led me to think a good deal about them. Their amusements, and their lessons. This little history was written for a real little arthur, and I have endeavoured to write it nearly as I would tell it to an intelligent child. I well remember what I wanted to be told myself, in addition to what I found in my lesson-book, when I was first allowed to read the History of England, and I hope I have answered most of the questions I recollect to have wished to ask. I may have failed in satisfying the almost bound less inquiries of intelligent children; and I could wish that the mother or governess, who may put this little book into the hands of her pupils, would read each chapter herself before she gives it to a child, that she may be ready with answers to such questions as the chapter may suggest. Book Old English History for Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old English History for Children Classic Reprint written by Edward Augustus Freeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English History for Children With regard to the spelling of old-english names, I must plead guilty to a certain amount of inconsistency. My own feeling is in favour of always using the genuine spelling of the old names rather than the common Latin and French corruptions. But I find that many people are in a manner frightened at the unusual form which is thus given to names still in common use. I have therefore, somewhat at the ex pense of consistency, left some of the more common names, such as Alfred, Edward, and Edith, in their modern spelling; while other names which are less familiar to modern readers, and which often have no One generally received modern shape, I have left in their ancient form. On the subject of old-english names and on one or two points connected with the old-english language I have added a few remarks at the end of this Preface.
